I presumed that Small was getting to the limits of what he could manage, just back from whatever injury kept him out of the last two games, so was hopefully done with the hindsight of: "Lets preserve him for Wembley" - @Chris_from_Sidcup made the right comment on the Match Thread last night, wondering if we could have got another ten minutes out of him, yet our management of players with Will Abbott in the building now is so much better.
I thought switching Campbell to the right worked better for TC as well, as he didnt have to deal with Grimmer anymore.
Small was noticeably surprised being subbed, so must have felt he had something left in the tank. When he turned and saw the standing ovation from AC Stand, he was emotional. Really hope he manage to keep him. Him and Kayne are such a force together.
What Nathan Jones does is not performative, like it or not it is his authentic self. I was at Leyton Orient for Appletons last game, Nathan Jones has been a proper excellent manager for us since he joined, we have had a great season so far, and Nathan, and dare I say Curtis Fleming, are 90% of the reason why.

Their keeper did bottle it though. He should have taken the ball, and the collision with Jones, but instead was pathetically weak.
Wycombe like playing for fouls, but it was notable that none of them protested to the referee that it was a foul, as they knew the keeper had bottled it.
I agree it was an error from the keeper, but bawling him out in front of 27,000 people when you should be focusing on the 10 minutes you've got to save your season is proper arsehole behaviour. If it had been us and Mannion had made that mistake I'd not have wanted to see one of our players screaming in his face straight after

Karoy Anderson take a bow. For a ten minute cameo that was as good as you will get - literally never stopped running, huge blocks, and was pivotal in seeing out the game relatively comfortably.
Kayne Ramsay is just a total Rolls Royce of a football player. Lloyd Jones and Macca were immense.
The pre match routine and everything set up by the club was superb - since we returned to The Valley I’ve never seen the place like that.
Agree with it all. The lad is becoming one hell of a player. I think that double block from Ramsay was worth a goal but I would like to mention how Gillesphey shepherded Kone out wide. It was terrific defending.
I thought Small looked visibly tired before he came off, I commented on it on the match thread just before Aneke started warming up. He was getting into his spaces a little bit too late and he'd started dropping deeper early, sometimes fully into the right back slot when they had the ball because he knew he wasn't going to be able to go up and down anymore. He's never had the best stamina in our team and he's coming back off an injury so it wasn't a huge surprise.

It was 0-0 and there was no Wembley at that point. TC got away from The grimmer reaper so he was always going to improve !
Why does TC slip over so much; ok I assume he was shot by a sniper in the match at Wycombe when he fell over the ball when in space, also he was man-handled by Grimmer in both matches but he slips when no one is near him ? Wrong studs or has he lost confidence after his 3 brilliant matches in a row when he scored a couple of crackers ? Nathan didn't need to go OTT about Tyreece and say he's better than the Premier players he worked with on camera. The lad has never stopped trying but against Wycombe in the last 3 matches including the 4-0 away win he has been the weakest link but personally I like him in tandem with Thierry but at 0-0 we needed to win and switching flanks for 10 minutes may have worked.
Ironic that we won with a quality long pass by Macca which their tall defenders had been coping with all night.

Feel question marks when Small was subbed off but it was actually a clever move by Jones. Grimmer had totally nullified TC down the left wing. Like others have said, Gilbert for Anderson was the perfect sub.
I thought Watson for Campbell was a good replacement as well, might have backfired a little bit had we gone into ET, as doubt we'd have had been the same sort of threat going forward - However having seen Tyreece take penalties, I didn't want him on the pitch as an option... No offence to the lad.
Jones delayed the Small substitution for 5 minutes because he nearly scored goal of the season just as he was about to get taken off and Jones realised that subbing him off there and then would have gone down less than ideally

Can't quite work out whether the atmosphere was better than against Doncaster. I think the 'moment' of the pens against Doncaster led to a release of pure relief, whereas last night the noise was maybe more constant throughout the game. And we actually won the match last night, of course!
They never really got into our box for the 15 mins or so following the goal, which I think sums up our superiority, tight as it was. And they could have nicked it in a moment, which was clearly their plan, and they nearly did.
Thought Coventry and the back 3 were outstanding all night, pretty much faultless other than one time 1st half when Coventry got caught in possession.

TC got nothing out of Grimmer, but I was surprised they didn't try swapping TC and Small over for 10 minutes before Small was subbed, just to give their defenders something else to think about. TC was definitely better on the right, but Small would have been a completely different challenge for Grimmer.
As others have said, Anderson was excellent when he came on, in a high press role, rather than a traditional parking the bus type of defensive sub.
