Anyone ever been? I'm thinking about going there next year - can anyone recommend anywhere good (and cheap) to stay? Would be particularly interested if anyone knows any nice self catering apartments - not too bothered about being right in the heart of the City as long as it's close to a tram stop, or whatever.

See if you can find out exactly what they did for us when you're out there.

Awesome city. Took the wife for Valentine's day a couple of years ago - absolutely fantastic place. Helped a lot that she's Sicilian, mind, and speaks fluent Italian, so we got the best service imaginable everywhere we went. You could go for a fortnight and not see half of what Rome has to offer. Our hotel was about ten miles North of the city - cheap, with great service, fabulous, clean rooms and an excellent breakfast - and the trams are fast and reliable, so we were in the main city in 20 minutes
