Was Phil Chapple our Chief Scout when we were in the Prem? Excellent news and glad they got this sorted before the end of the season and the opening of the summer transfer window.

Thinking back to our successful times:
Charlton people in charge, in the coaching ranks, in the squad, and even manning the turnstiles.

Perhaps we are heading that way again.
    Fingers crossed.

I think this is massive news , and i'm really excited about it, a bit like when we made a step change with our medical team, which has made a huge difference, to our availability of players.

That was Jeff Vetere. Chapple was Powell’s scout, when Nathan Jones was also on the coaching staff.

That is fantastic news. Without wanting to live in the past, that’s a very Curbs style appointment.
    Brilliant.

Calvin Charlton - what a name! Has some good experience going on LinkedIn. His knowledge of Scotland will surely be very useful, got to be more bargains up there like Edwards.

Interesting we’ve made an appointment for a new Head of Emerging Talent role too, putting even more focus on helping academy players bridge the gap to the first team.

My guess is our recruitment will focus on players to improve the starting 11, maybe the odd squad player where we can’t fill the gap, with more u21s stepping up than as a fanbase we’d ideally like.

We might see some u21 signings to fill gaps in that squad too, we had a few trialists in their last few games, and maybe the odd signing like Dixon if a player stands out.

It’ll make a change from the big rebuilds we’ve had every summer for the last few years.

Yeah someone said that on here recently, but I wasn’t sure exactly what NJ means by that?

Ticks every single box. Great piece of recruitment and it really feels we are now, after so many years, heading in the right direction, and looking up.

    Welcome home, Phil.

He wants the under 21s to be capable and fit enough to play in the first team.

Assume he means no squad players who aren’t good enough to start. If there’s injuries etc, the U21s get the opportunity. Not entirely sure that’s a recipe for success in The Championship if we get there.

I heard that Calvin actually changed his surname by deed poll in order to secure the roll when being interviewed

The candidate Marvin Milwall never stood a chance

Stood more of a chance than a mush called Nigel.

On Alistair Clarke’s new Head of Emerging Talent role, having found the job description it seems the purpose is to find u21 players who could play in our first team.

    Role Description

To work collaboratively with Academy and 1st Team Talent ID and Recruitment staff to identify, recommend and recruit talented young players capable of playing in CAFC’s 1st Team.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead on all emerging talent recruitment strategies and processes ensuring all players are profiled, identified, scouted both live and via video and reported on
    • Identify, recommend and recruit high performing U17 – U20 players capable of playing in CAFC’s 1st Team
    • Lead on our traditional and non-traditional recruitment sources throughout these age groups
    • Liaise closely with Academy Recruitment Manager and PDP Lead Phase Coaches to ensure trialists are inducted professionally and in a timely manner, with relevant documentation completed
    • Collaborate with Managing Director, Academy Manager and relevant staff members on potential player decision making process to fit in line with Club’s identified succession planning strategy
    • Gather market intelligence to ensure targets are in keeping with set annual budgets
    • Develop and maintain a network of contacts that can support the Talent ID of the emerging talent market as well as potential opportunities for external loans
    • Ensure you have an excellent understanding of our internal players within the Academy and 1st Team playing squads
    • Work closely with Professional Development Phase Scouts to ensure they are viewing games accordingly, as stipulated by yourself and the needs of the department.
    • Work effectively with other departments to ensure the Academy operates in a multi-disciplinary environment and to ensure all goalkeeper’s are fully prepared and have a comprehensive development programme.
    • Assist with administrative tasks related to the role, including general organisation, recording of games, have an awareness of player individual development plans and ensure all documentation is uploaded to KML
    • Contribute to the scouting, recruitment and GAP Analysis meetings where appropriate
    • Attend and contribute to meetings as directed by the Technical Director and Academy Manager
    • Attend at least five hours of FA in-service training per year.

Seems like some great and well needed recruitment in key roles.  The scouting system at this club seems to have been neglected and broken for years which has led to some proper shit signings.

NJ definitely "getting the band back together"
    Not exactly unusual is it?
Managers often like to keep favoured lieutenants when they go from club to club
Eddie Howe has his Right Hand Man
Mark Hughes had his in several jobs (Bowen?)
The Cowley brothers come as a pair

The only real difference here is that Chapple played for us for a while, so feels some sort of familiar to some fans
Jones & Chapple met in the year NJ worked here before.

Let's hope his familiar backroom team is more successful than some of his old Luton players: Campbell, Hylton etc...

Interesting point on this is that he doesn't have anyone on the coaching staff he'd worked with before (apart from Hylton but he wasn't a coach before). That alone shows how impressed he is with Fleming, Brayne and Henderson

Recruitment with footballers isn't an exact science but Phil Chapple is a C+D winner and if he can carry on not only what he was part of with the Jenkinson money at CAFC with Chris Powell but emulate who ever managed to get Ramsey, Edwards, Jones etc to Charlton then what ever happens on Sunday it does feel at long last CAFC are making better decisions.
Of course we need the win as the process will take even longer.

I really hope Big Phil still has the Midas touch and in unison with Nathan, this club can continue to grow as the last 5  years + have been so mediocre and that's being kind.
