All-time best and worst Charlton play-off XIs

Needed something to distract me today, so have been piecing together some all-time Charlton play off XIs. These are just based on performances in play-off matches alone for the Addicks. I feel one will be easier than the other...

Best XI:
GK: Illic - Penalty heroics
DEF: Rufus - Late goal to take it to extra time in 99
DEF: Shirtliff - 2 late goals to win in 87
DEF: Bauer - 90+4 2019. Enough said
DEF: Purrington - Another Wembley goal scorer
MID: Bielik - In just for that first goal in the home semi. That roar...
MID: Cullen - Played superbly plus the last minute assist in 2019
MID: Kinsella - Just a bloody legend
MID: Williams - Such an impact sub
FWD: Mendonca (c) - You don't get better than a hat trick in the final
FWD: ? (Soon to be Godden... - I can't face putting Lyle Taylor here but he would probably be in for his goal at Donny...)

Worst XI (I'm struggling with a little more here):
GK: Darren Randolph - 0/5 on pens
DEF: Naby Sarr - The own goal and the missed pen in the semi
DEF: Miguel Llera - Red card v Swindon
DEF: Gary Borrowdale - Just bad
DEF: ?
MID: Bailey - That penalty is still travelling
MID: ?
MID: ?
MID: ?
FWD: ?
FWD: Parker - Harsh, but needs recognition in one of these teams

Any suggestions?

Darren Pratley doesn't get in over the 4 you've put in but worth a shout out for the playoff semi goal saving the tie and his performance in the final

Dave Maloney, Akpo Sodje, Nicky Forster, Michael Zyro could all take the worst Striker role - I think Zyro has to be given that.

Can include Sullay Kaikai in Midfield as well from the 2018 Play-Off team that lost to Shrewsbury - Matt Fry in Defence for when we lost to Swindon?

Neal Heaney from the 98 team would get in the second team for me.

I'd have Aribo over Jonny Williams in the first team

Parker and Sarr shouldn't be in worst teams if they were part of a winning team regardless.

I'd have Neil Heaney in for breaking Tarico's nose.

Best XI ... Mendonca is NOT captain.

I'd possibly let it slip by without comment if you'd given it to Kinsella but there is only one Captain Fantastic over the last 40 years.

You could argue a case that if it hadn't been for Shirtliff's extra time goals in 1987 - and therefore we'd lost been relegated and possibly sunk without trace with no return to The Valley - then the success under Lord Llewellyn in the 90s and 00s would never have happened.

THAT is why I'd have him as captain: his importance extends off the pitch as well as on.

If it wasn't for Randolph, in the first leg at Swindon, we would have been dead & buried, long before kick off at the Valley.

I'd have Steve Brown in, for THAT tackle, and for taking the sort of penalty in the shoot out that sends a message to all his team mates - "we ain't losing this".

Dave Maloney? Mooney is your man.

We also lost a play-off semi-final to GnatsPiss, back in the 90's. You could look at that team too.

Clever, delicate strike from Sarr and lovely little step-over dummy from Phillips

We should have been home and dry by half time in the first leg against Palace. Couldn't fault any of the players in that side, just lacked the quality in front of goal.

then we started an ageing Gary Nelson up top instead of David White and basically surrendered

Losing a Championship semi, even if it was that lot, is more expected than losing a L1 semi against Shrewsbury.

My only criticism of Curbs was not making better use of David Whyte (generally, not just the play offs) He was clearly a lousy trainer, and didn't buy into Curbs' hard work ethic, but so much natural talent. Perhaps the fact he was out of the game so quickly after leaving us proves Curbs was right, but a terrible waste of talent anyway. He was brilliant, every goal was a goal of the month contender.

Sarr didn't score an own goal, it was keeper error.

Absolutely loved David Whyte as a kid. Sad end to his career and even sadder end to his life.

He did...but agree it was keeper error. Still....it set the game up didn't it?!

I’d have Newton in over Johnny Williams in the best XI. Goal at home to Ipswich and scored the winning penalty at Wembley before Gray’s miss. I’d find a place for Stevie Brown too for that tackle.

Shout for Mark Bright as a forward too.

You can’t have Parker in the Worst XI. He won the free-kick we scored from. Try Ajose instead.

RB has to be the finest exponent of that position I’ve seen play for us. Step forward John Humphrey.

You lot need to choose a playoff manager as well. Based on performance during playoffs only. Think about what they had to work with and what formations and mid game changes they made.

    Agree
An Ex Charlton player said everyone knew David Whyte was a talent but his time keeping was poor which didn't impress Curbs.

Jim Melrose for the other striker spot? Scored 2 goals in the semi against Ipswich, then against Leeds in the home leg.
