Exclusive: Plymouth Argyle set to beat Bolton Wanderers & Charlton Athletic to Hertha Berlin transfer deal

Plymouth Argyle are in advanced talks to sign Hertha Berlin midfielder Bradley Ibrahim, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

And whilst the Devon side may have lost their boss to Germany, they're closing in on a transfer deal from that very country which would see their midfield options bolstered.

    Home Park - Plymouth

In the last few weeks, former Plymouth midfielder David Fox - who played 95 times for them at the end of his career - returned to the club as head of football operations, succeeding former sporting director Neil Dewsnip at the head of affairs at Home Park.

One of the things Fox will be responsible for is signing players, and despite no head coach being in place at Argyle, talks are ongoing over transfer targets for whoever the new boss will be.

And FLW has been told that Plymouth are on the verge of winning the transfer battle for the services of Bradley Ibrahim, who is currently contracted to Hertha Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga.

Football League World reported in May that Plymouth were part of somewhat of a scramble for the 20-year-old, with Bolton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United all in the hunt to sign him this summer.

However, it can now be revealed that Argyle are in advanced discussions to bring Ibrahim to Home Park, with a deal close to see the ex-Arsenal academy man make the move.

How Bradley Ibrahim fared for Crawley Town in 2024-25

Ibrahim only signed for Hertha in the winter transfer window of 2024, leaving the Gunners behind for a European adventure.

He is yet to play for Hertha's first-team though, appearing 12 times for their second team in the Regionalliga before joining Crawley Town on loan last summer for their League One season.

A combative midfielder, Ibrahim appeared 37 times in all competitions for the Red Devils across the course of 2024-25, and whilst they were relegated back to League Two at the first time of asking, the youngster impressed at the heart of their engine room.

Ibrahim did pick up 15 yellow cards across the course of the campaign, showing his love for a tackle in the process, but he also won the League One Goal of the Month award for a long-range strike against Wrexham.

Ibrahim is now set to swap the Broadfield Stadium for Home Park though if Plymouth can close their transfer talks out with a deal, in what would be signing number four of their summer after Jamie Paterson, Caleb Watts and Jack MacKenzie.

To paraphrase: “Ibrahim’s agent wants his player’s name in the news”.

Exclusive:Charlton Athletic interested in landing Sheffield Wednesday defender after contract offer

Sheffield Wednesday defender, Akin Famewo, is believed to be a transfer target for Charlton Athletic.

The 26-year-old, who was having a fantastic season for the Owls prior to an injury setback last season, is out of contract in a few weeks’ time, but has been offered the chance to stay at Hillsborough.

As things stand, none of those offered deals have put pen to paper, with the futures of Famewo, Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson all still up in the air for now, and after they entered into the final months of their contracts they can now be approached by any other club – including those in the English pyramid.

Akin Famewo is out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday soon

The Star understands that the Addicks, who recently secured promotion back into the Championship, have earmarked the defender as a possible target for the season ahead, and the fact that he can be signed as a free agent means that there are bound to be other suitors out there as well.

Famewo is no stranger to Charlton having had two successful loan spells there between 2020 and 2022, and the fact that he worked with manager, Nathan Jones, at Luton Town could also have had a role to play in their interest.

It’d be a real blow for the Owls if they were to lose the defender given his performances, especially in his outings last season, and it would also leave them even shorter in defence ahead of what could be a very busy summer at S6. At the time of writing it seems likely that the club will also be hampered by transfer restrictions.

    Sonny Carey joins the Addicks!

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of ball-carrying midfielder Sonny Carey, who will join the club following the expiration of his contract at Blackpool.

The 24-year-old, who netted 11 goals from midfield last season, has put pen to paper on a three-year contract to become the Addicks' first signing of the summer.

The news follows this morning’s announcement that Nathan Jones has signed a new five-year contract with the club and the Charlton Manager explained he was pleased to bring in a player he has tried to sign in the past.

He said: “Sonny is a player I’ve known for a while. He’s done well at Blackpool, he’s had a few seasons in the Championship and finished last season strongly.

“He’s 24 years of age, so has plenty of scope to improve, he’s athletic, he’s a ball-carrier, he can create, he can score, so those things add to what we’ve already got here. We always want our midfielders to chip in [with goals], our midfielders this year have and we want to add that competition and keep moving forward as a team and as a group. As a club we believe we’re moving forward, he can contribute to that and we believe he has the attributes to play for Charlton Athletic.”

Carey said: "I’m delighted, from the minute I had a call with the gaffer I knew straight away that this was the place for me, his aspirations for the club and the vision that he has are unmatched. I’m delighted that Charlton are back in the Championship, so I can’t wait to get started."

The midfielder came through the Norwich City academy and joined Blackpool four seasons ago, scoring seven goals in his last eight games for the Tangerines.
