If the rumoured 4 lined up (maybe three now with Carey signing) is true then poetically it would be nice to have that "spine" in place - GK, CB, Midfielder (Sonny) and then a striker.

But that's just me and my autistic love of patterns more than anything haha.

Wing back becomes the most important recruitment position now then. We potentially need at least 2, maybe 3 new ones to go with Edwards and maybe Assimwe (could be loaned out)

Very disappointing, he would have stayed if we offered the money.

He always seemed to want to move. Preston was a better fit for him? In other words they offered more money to him. I can see a new right and left wing back coming in. Small is a decent player but his end product is poor.

Disappointing to see him go, definitely has potential, feel like his end product needs significant improvement though

Would expect Mulligan in as one of the replacements and then a left sider to compete with Edwards.

Perhaps we offered what we thought he was worth. Definitely a shame though as would have liked to see him progress with us for longer. If he can get consistency to his end product he will be a top championship player at least

Still find the Preston thing odd, their fans haven't really stopped talking about him since the FA Cup game but there's not really been any information from journalists to say they're interested
I heard at the weekend from someone who works at Preston and would know, not only are they interested but had agreed terms. Hope it turns out to be wrong, but that is what I was told.
I think that’s more than plausible. He’s been in negotiations with us for months and shown no inclination to put pen to paper. You’d have thought that he’d have committed before now with the proviso that we were playing in The Championship. He’s a silly lad in my view. Preston if it’s true will be his seventh (?) Club and the only one where he’s played to his potential is with us and under Jones. If they’ve offered lots more money than we were prepared to offer then I can see his reasoning but I think it’s actually a step backwards for him in playing terms. Only time will tell but I have a feeling he’ll regret chasing the money at this point.
He may be a „silly lad“, but he is still only a lad, and therefore susceptible to dodgy arguments from an agent who stands to gain more from sending him to Preston than staying with us.

Is that an unfair take, @Swisdom, you may know the agent?
I think you know the agent. It is Jon fortune, so don't think you can chalk this one down to the agent. It was simply Preston are offering a lot more money than we were.
In the end, any agent is supposed to work for their client, not Charlton Athletic.

Even if they are Jon Fortune...
Many of them work for their own interests.

Don’t know why but have this gut feeling someone else might sign today, maybe I'm just being greedy

I didn't envisage it being one of our players signing for someone else...
  • Just wondering with Thierry now gone, does that mean we need to bring in a new winger plus cover in both full back positions, whereas had he stayed we would’ve only really been looking for cover in one fullback position?

    Either that or Imray?

Probably greedy but why not both? They’re different styles of player from what I can see, Mulligan inverts to midfield and Imray is more traditionally up and down.

I don’t think Imray is a goer anyway, more likely he knows someone and swapped shirts (Elerewe maybe)

I did ponder this! Mulligan is listed as a CM on wiki so could fulfill the utility role nicely. I definitely wouldn't count going for both as greedy.

Not sure what the Imray shirt thing is about, guess he might just be a fan or as you say knows Deji.

For what it's worth I dated for several years  a key member of the Preston women's team and we still talk a lot! Small hasn't been at their training ground at any point from what I've been told ( although he still could be on holiday idk)
Well this was hopeful while it lasted...

With all due respect to Imray who did look good in his video, I would sincerely hope our replacement for Small is someone a bit better than a player who spent last season in League 2, we already have Asiimwe who has also had a good season in the same league (would not mind either of them as a backup, however)

Well, we already needed bodies to cover wide and now even more important - I think we needed two before small left so three is a big ask

Friday 6 June, paraphrasing the words of Brian Blessed as Richard IV from Black Adder season 1 episode 1:

This day has been as ’twere
    A mighty stew
In which the beef of Nathan Jones five year contract
    Was mix’d
    With the vile turnip
Of Thierry Small leaving for Preston
    And the grisly dumpling
Of the signing of an unremarkable League 1 midfielder
    But we must eat
    The yellow wobbly parts
On which we have feasted far too often...
