    At the end of the day, £11k a week over four years isn’t good business for us right now for a player as erratic as Small. Nathan understands that — and in Nathan we trust

    Sad to see him go and I wish him all tge best, but I'm not actually seeing the great advantage in this transfer, unless Preston have a much bigger payroll. Fot us Thierry was a great little player and a big part of promotion, but he did have an end product that could really frustrate.
    There are certainly better players if we can attract and afford them, great.

    it could well be Preston said we’re really want you to be part of our team, you’ll be playing left wing back, we see you as being a big player for us and we’ll back that by offering you a 4-year contract worth £10k a week.

    Charlton may have said we’d like you to stay part of our squad. Can’t say at this point you’ll be a starter, but your versatility will be a factor. We’ll offer you a 2-year contract worth £6.5k a week, with a 3rd year option if you play x games.

    Now if that is the real story, does Small’s decision look the wrong one?  I’ve absolutely no idea whether that’s the real situation btw, I’m just exampling why I suspect it isn’t a straight forward case of ‘he’s gone for the money’.

    We move on, and I am very confident Nathan will get us a replacement who will be better...

    Of course not. We have our own thread on whatnothervforums say about us, to save the aggro of having multiple accounts across the leagues.

    I considered him a first team starter who'd improve at the same rate we'd improve as a team, a big shame he's gone.

    Not just for what he could offer us individually, but if he'd signed with us we'd have had that bit more stability within the squad.

    Plenty more fish in the sea, I guess.

    Our average wage for playing staff was just shy of £10k a week. I’d imagine he’s around the £8k a week mark. Just a guess.

    Preston are developing an irritating habit of picking up one of our players after our play-off promotions. The hope was that our promotion would enable us to get closer to what was on offer elsewhere and that Thierry might be swayed by the benefits of continuity. Alas, it was not to be and the lure of Preston’s salary package and the security of a long term deal won the day. The player has to act in what he perceives to be in his best interests and only time will tell if he’s made the right call.

    It’s a shame because Thierry is an entertaining player with pace and power, albeit one who is far from the finished article. He won’t be able to take as many liberties with opponents in the Championship, so a 4-year contract is a risk for Preston (even for an out of contract player), although he has significant potential if he can continue to improve his game.

    We move on and I’m sure Nathan and the club have been preparing for this eventuality, not least because we’ve been trying unsuccessfully to persuade the player to sign a new deal for the last 12 months.

    We’ll get some compensation for our role in his development. Although he’s only been with us for 18 months, I think that role has been significant and the England Under 20 call up may be useful in underscoring that. It would be good to secure some sort of sell-on clause, whether on a negotiated basis or at a tribunal.

    I'll miss him taking a player on, having an hour to put a cross in and then thinking actually I fancy taking him on again.

    All joking aside, a shame to lose him. He was an exciting player and with his whole career ahead of him can only get better. As has been said, I'd be more gutted losing Jones or Ramsay.

    Thierry may also miss his song (I certainly will), although I guess Preston supporters can simply substitute ‘Blackpool’ for ‘Millwall’.

    I thought he’d stay but he hasn’t and we move on. He’s not irreplaceable. Sideways move in my opinion and I feel he thinks he’s a better player than he actually is. His end product was pretty poor most of the time. I trust NJ/Chapple to find a suitable replacement.

    And I don’t think NJ would have stayed/extended his stay if he didn’t think he was being sufficiently backed by the owners so I’m sure if he’d really wanted Small to stay we’d have found a way to ensure he did. Small has moved for the money, NJ obviously thinks what Small wanted can be better spent elsewhere.

    Good luck Thierry but Preston? really?

    Was hoping he'd sign and develop with us. No guarantee he'll be first choice at Preston. Anyway we move on, not much loyalty in football these days to get upset about losing him,just need to replace him now

    I think I am right he has had 4 permanent homes in his short career, Everton, Southampton, Charlton, Preston.
    Essentially a smaller club at each move!  If the pattern continues it will be Accrington up next.

    I’m probably in the minority here but I’m really not too worried about Thierry going. I think he was found out too easily in L1 and I think stepping up to the Championship may be too much for him. I’m not sure if he has much of a football IQ. Some players do, I don’t think he does. That’s why his end product was lacking so often. Because he just didn’t get it. Only the future will tell but I can see why Nathan Jones was prepared to let him go. I think he would have been ok as a squad player for us as he maybe learned the game more but he probably wanted more than that.

    Totally bemused by this move as I see it as a step sideways ambition wise. If the amount of his wages is true I am sure we couldn't match it, which is also worrying seeing that I would assume is the bottom line for a half decent championship player we need to attract.

    Honestly if it's as good as that or even able to tot up to 200k its better than a kick in the teeth.

    What I wonder is if it has to roll back to the clubs (Everton / Southampton )before us

    Hopefully it's more that we didn't feel Small was worth a 4 year deal earning our top end wage, rather than we can't afford to pay £10k or so for any player.
