  • Sad to see him go and I wish him all tge best, but I'm not actually seeing the great advantage in this transfer, unless Preston have a much bigger payroll. Fot us Thierry was a great little player and a big part of promotion, but he did have an end product that could really frustrate.
There are certainly better players if we can attract and afford them, great.
  • It's a shame he's going .I wish him well but I think he will rue this move

Preston….. Hmmm…. Like Living in Sandbanks and choosing to go to Clacton for your Holidays.

Can’t, see him following in the Yann  May or Taylor history of leavers we talk about years later.

The southeast is overcrowded & full of ‘me, me, me’ wankers. On £520k a year, I am sure if he wanted to, he could buy a lovely house in a lovely Lancashire village with lots of character and charm.
He could buy up half of Burnley - who cares ?
Or a really nice house in a beautiful Lancashire village, without a Greggs, vape shop, or Nandos in sight… like I said.

Says it’s the best club for him right now ??? he is desperately trying to get back in the big league and does not matter who he uses on the way ?

Probably a bit of truth in that.
    That’ll be a first then
  • Give it a few weeks of our transfer business, and we will be saying "Thierry who"...
We move on, and I am very confident Nathan will get us a replacement who will be better...

  • Slightly off topic, but do any of our fans on here actually join another team's forum when we sign one of their players? Has anyone joined the Blackpool forum today? Or Cardiff’s? I just find it a bit weird, really.

    Anyway, back on topic!

Of course not. We have our own thread on whatnothervforums say about us, to save the aggro of having multiple accounts across the leagues.
Nice to have visitors occasionally-Ringo Lion and his mates are always welcome.
  • I considered him a first team starter who'd improve at the same rate we'd improve as a team, a big shame he's gone.

Not just for what he could offer us individually, but if he'd signed with us we'd have had that bit more stability within the squad.

Plenty more fish in the sea, I guess.
  • Perhaps it's why we signed Carey to play LWB

This is straight from the NJ playbook...

    Last year Alfie May
    This year ...

    Hope it works out.

Is it considered 'chasing the money' when you're getting a pretty average Championship salary at the level you're now at?

If we offered less, surely if anything that's below the going rate and we've made that decision based on how we value him.
10k a week would make Small our highest earner, he is not our best player so we may have decided he’s not worth that

Preston have been at this level a lot longer, 10k a week is probably about average or just above in their squad.

I think we will pay players that kind of money, but they are going to be our best players
Our average wage for playing staff was just shy of £10k a week. I’d imagine he’s around the £8k a week mark. Just a guess.
    Evening NorthEnder. You can be the first to get this going at Deepdale next season. Thierry will be pleased I'm sure;

    🎵 Thierry, wooo-oooh.
    Thierry, wooo-ooooh.
    His name's Thierry Small,
    he fucking hates Blackpool. 🎵

I haven't read the whole thread so someone may have already passed on this lyrical gem.

  • I'll miss him taking a player on, having an hour to put a cross in and then thinking actually I fancy taking him on again.

All joking aside, a shame to lose him. He was an exciting player and with his whole career ahead of him can only get better. As has been said, I'd be more gutted losing Jones or Ramsay.

Thats like saying that someone in Gretna is barely Scottish... ;)
  • Thierry may also miss his song (I certainly will), although I guess Preston supporters can simply substitute ‘Blackpool’ for ‘Millwall’.

  • I thought he’d stay but he hasn’t and we move on. He’s not irreplaceable. Sideways move in my opinion and I feel he thinks he’s a better player than he actually is. His end product was pretty poor most of the time. I trust NJ/Chapple to find a suitable replacement.

And I don’t think NJ would have stayed/extended his stay if he didn’t think he was being sufficiently backed by the owners so I’m sure if he’d really wanted Small to stay we’d have found a way to ensure he did. Small has moved for the money, NJ obviously thinks what Small wanted can be better spent elsewhere.

Good luck Thierry but Preston? really?

I'm disappointed you missed my typing out the whole new song a few posts above, mate !
  • Was hoping he'd sign and develop with us. No guarantee he'll be first choice at Preston. Anyway we move on, not much loyalty in football these days to get upset about losing him, just need to replace him now

I think I am right he has had 4 permanent homes in his short career, Everton, Southampton, Charlton, Preston.
Essentially a smaller club at each move!  If the pattern continues it will be Accrington up next.

How much do we think we got in compensation? 200k?
I have a strong suspicion that would be fairly optimistic
Not sure if this is the same as a development fee, but just found this online.

    JAMES COLLINS

    • James Collins joined League Two club Shrewsbury Town as 21 year old striker in January 2011, having previously been an Aston Villa player (who made no first team appearances for Villa).
    • Quickly establishing himself as a first-team regular, James appeared 66 times in the League for Shrewsbury between 2011 and 2012, scoring 22 League goals.  In the 2011/2012 season, Shrewsbury won promotion and James was their top scorer.
    • In the summer of 2012, only 18 months after signing for Shrewsbury, an out-of-contract James signed for Swindon Town, who themselves had just been promoted to League One.
    • The PFCC decided that Swindon Town should pay Shrewsbury an initial compensation fee of £140,000.
    • Additionally, further payments of £20,000 after 15, 30, 45 and 60 appearances (totalling up to £80,000) would be due.
    • Swindon would also pay Shrewsbury 20% of any profit it makes from selling the player to another club at any point in the future.
  • I’m probably in the minority here but I’m really not too worried about Thierry going. I think he was found out too easily in L1 and I think stepping up to the Championship may be too much for him. I’m not sure if he has much of a football IQ. Some players do, I don’t think he does. That’s why his end product was lacking so often. Because he just didn’t get it. Only the future will tell but I can see why Nathan Jones was prepared to let him go. I think he would have been ok as a squad player for us as he maybe learned the game more but he probably wanted more than that.
  • Totally bemused by this move as I see it as a step sideways ambition wise. If the amount of his wages is true I am sure we couldn't match it, which is also worrying seeing that I would assume is the bottom line for a half decent championship player we need to attract.

Honestly if it's as good as that or even able to tot up to 200k its better than a kick in the teeth.

What I wonder is if it has to roll back to the clubs (Everton / Southampton )before us
