Jones wants players to buy into the project and who are happy to be a cog in the overall team for the wider good. Not sure that philosophy sits well with breaking the bank on wages for one player. Suspect that’s the reason we didn’t push the boat out and explains the tone of NJ’s ‘goodbye’ statement.
1. In most highly paid professional employment sectors, "job-hoppers" are viewed with some suspicion. Is this not the case in football? if it is, did you advise Thierry to consider this before deciding on yet another move at such a young age?
2. You benefitted from several years at the same club in your formative years as a player. Would it not be good for Thierry at such a young age to benefit from the same stability? Why is it better for him to move now to a club with a very similar profile but located in a very different part of the country? Does Thierry have family/friends links to Preston?
3. How do you benefit financially from this transfer compared with Thierry deciding to accept Charlton's offer?
How much do we think we got in compensation? 200k?
I have a strong suspicion that would be fairly optimistic
Not sure if this is the same as a development fee, but just found this online.
JAMES COLLINS
James Collins joined League Two club Shrewsbury Town as 21 year old striker in January 2011, having previously been an Aston Villa player (who made no first team appearances for Villa).
Quickly establishing himself as a first-team regular, James appeared 66 times in the League for Shrewsbury between 2011 and 2012, scoring 22 League goals. In the 2011/2012 season, Shrewsbury won promotion and James was their top scorer.
In the summer of 2012, only 18 months after signing for Shrewsbury, an out-of-contract James signed for Swindon Town, who themselves had just been promoted to League One.
The PFCC decided that Swindon Town should pay Shrewsbury an initial compensation fee of £140,000.
Additionally, further payments of £20,000 after 15, 30, 45 and 60 appearances (totalling up to £80,000) would be due.
Swindon would also pay Shrewsbury 20% of any profit it makes from selling the player to another club at any point in the future.
Honestly if it's as good as that or even able to tot up to 200k its better than a kick in the teeth.
What I wonder is if it has to roll back to the clubs (Everton / Southampton )before us
There were other examples, some not so good and some much better.
Lets all be honest about Small and not only his ability but his worth to Charlton -
Small was very good at some stuff at L1 level and would probably be good at it in Championship too, I.E. taking players on and beating them, he was also had very little end product most of the time (again at L1 level). for me personally he wasn't as good as CBT (certainly no where near the end product and even CBT would be criticised for that) who hasn't been that successful in the championship. Now of course given the choice i would want Small to stay but tbh if it costs 11k a week I wouldnt pay that.

Regardless of Fortune's own past here, lest we forget he is only Smalls most recent agent - and Small has done this before, more than once. Its easy for us to assume this fits into the narrative of an agent getting into a naive young player's ear, whispering of higher earnings to line his own pockets.... but thats not necessarily the case.
Based on previous history it's equally possible that Small is the one pushing for a move away and whatever his agent may think of that, it would then be his job to negotiate with whatever party the player wants to sign for.
If Small wanted to stay, he could have done. I think trying to cast aspersions on his agent is a bit premature given Small's track record for such things.
Unsure if it's been mentioned but it's worth remembering, Small was brought in in Jan and Jones went out last summer and got an upgrade as soon as he feasibly could. Small got a chance due to Sean Clare's assault on Josh Edwards and as soon as Edwards was fit again, Small was out the side, it's only after moving to RW did he finally find a home but was still quite inconsistent, and whilst yes he was exciting, I question how much of that is down to just him and TC having raw pace and trickery, (hopefully something we address this window) it's also quite telling that in the home leg at 0-0 he was hooked off, all the above makes me feel it's someone Jones and the club would of liked to have kept, it's not someone we'd break the bank, or our wage structure for.
He is deffo not a left back. Not a good defender like Edwards. Got pulled by Jones several times for underperforming at right wing back. Most effective at stopping other teams having two defenders on TC. Definitely replaceable, maybe even by Laquerataboa or Ennslin.
Have no problem with his departure if he is being offered more money and he feels Preston can help his career. However, slightly surprised by the choice of club given they only ended up one point above the relegation places, but maybe there were no other suitors.

The body language between him and Jones was never great
Was at Everton from 11, but decided to sign a pro contract with Southampton at 17. Could be for football reasons. It didn’t work out. So signed for Charlton to kick start career at 18/19. Contract needed to be renewed, but a fellow Championship club in Preston offered more money on a four year contract. Surely that is his first decent contract?

This “Small likes to move around” narrative is quite the stretch.
What’s he done exactly?
Left Everton after 0 league appearances to get a better crack at first-team football at Southampton.
Three loan spells, obviously not getting games at Southampton, so joins us. That’s it.
At the end of the day, £11k a week over four years isn’t good business for us right now for a player as erratic as Small. Nathan understands that — and in Nathan we trust
Reluctantly agree and it's a shame as a couple of good years out of him and sell him for a couple of mill or more and that's your money back but not worth breaking the wage structure for, which is what I imagine we'd have to do.

I'm not "trying to cast aspersions". If I had the opportunity I would quite happily ask Jon Fortune these questions in person.
It puzzles me why as fans we all think its just fine to cast aspersions on referees virtually every week, on managers as soon as things go wrong, on owners as soon as we decide they are not investing sufficiently their own money, and players as soon as they show any hint of disloyalty; and yet we are completely uncurious about the role of agents, who extract, as i recall recently figures, £300m per year from the English game.
One of those rare players whose pace and sheer unpredictability can get the crowd up and roaring. A sad loss and we need to find a good replacement, and hopefully one with greater composure and an end product.

We just don’t have the money . Shouldn’t be a surprise .
On Small: He gets a nice wage and signing on fee, would have preferred him to stay but not sure if he's quite 11k a week keep yet? Maybe. Ah well, chasing money or not it's another restart for him after what looked like a settled, career turning move with us. Thanks for the season and a bit but I'll probably join the bitter/ petty club though so your good luck wishes can go get fooked.
Jon fortune isn't the only agent (if he even operates as one , his profile assumes not) cofounder of the agency sure, but that doesn't make him solely responsible for handling all the clients moves (before he gets the Scott/ Roddy treatment 😉 )
PWR. Very much in keeping with Small's career so far. He doesn't seem to settle anywhere for too long. A 4 year contract for likely more than we were offering so you can understand parts of it. A player with a very high ceiling but gut feel is he wont progress from this move in footballing terms. Reckon he'll stagnate and ultimately drop back a level
He could be spectacular and spectacularly frustrating. A great little spell, then very little for the rest of the game. CBT,, towards the end was far more productive than Small, scoring regularly. No doubt about his potential, but will he ever fullfil it? We will hopefully find a more rounded player, perhaps less, exciting, but who may actually contribute more.
His agent needs to give his head a wobble! Sideways move for a player who needs the occasional arm around his shoulder, good player but not exceptional. He enjoyed his social life around London, bit different up in the dark depression of Preston. Still only an UBER from Las Vagas, sorry I mean Blackpool. Good luck with your new club.
For me there’s a hint of Alfie May situation about this… reckon he might have stayed but Jones didn’t really want him or certainly show him the love he would have needed to convince him
You can't blame every player leaving on Jones ffs
I’m not “blaming”. Just saying there may be an element of decision making about this.
small hauled off in the Wycombe second leg, threw his arms up in the air as he was replaced
may last day of 23-24 season hauled off at half time at Wycombe when chasing the golden boot
Neither player, rightly or wrongly, were Jones’ most trusted priorities; he didn’t want them enough and they didn’t feel wanted enough. It worked out with May, hopefully this does too. Lloyd Jones was wanted enough, and therefore felt wanted enough , so he’s still here.
Disappointing. But would be more disappointed if we lost/ lose Ramsey or Jones.
Absolutely agree. I think Jones is great but I'm really a massive Ramsey fan. He's definitely my favourite player and I can't even remember having one since Gallagher. I'd be gutted to lose him.
I've never really understood Small. I just don't rate him. Perhaps it's because we played him out of his favourite position a lot because he always looked to me like he got so far and then didn't know what to do next.
If we had to sell any of our younger players to sort out our budget, I'd be happy to sacrifice he and Leaburn.
The aim is: 10 home wins 3 away wins 11 draws 50 points
I have faith in this management to do whatever is necessary to give us the best possible chance to make it happen.
We were certainly a better side, when he was in it, he had pace, and got us up the pitch.
But, I was more gutted when Rak Saki left, now that fella did rip up league one, with his goals and assists.
Totally id even say if we had him in the team now I'd wager on us not scrapping it out at the lower ends of the league next season he's improved and is dangerous in the championship.

It will be interesting where they play him next season, as at LWB he has defensive flaws.
Could have sworn he contributed more
