Away Allocations in the Championship

  • Why on a Charlton forum have we got 2 Millwall fans trying to defend their awful away support - #MillwallLife again ole ole 🎶
You’ll have good away crowds for the first season. If you manage to stay up this season and spend a few seasons at that level (unlikely I know 😉) yours will start to dwindle as well. We take shit numbers to places like Hull but when you’ve played there like 8 seasons on the spin those shit northern towns get a bit tiresome.

Our away numbers up north aren’t great but Charlton aren’t particularly known for amazing away support either. As your own Oohaah often mentions. Pot kettle black and all that
This is true, we might get some decent followings up north this season, but in future seasons i wouldn't expect us to take more than 1k to many places north of the midlands.

And the EFL dicking around with timings for televised games and making quite a few of them 12.30 now isn't going to help either.
Thing is, with a lot of these northern teams, they will have a hell of a lot of southern based fans who have relocated. I remember hearing once that behind Man U, Sunderland had the biggest london supporters club of all the northern clubs (this was a few years back, so could’ve changed). The point is there will always be a few hundred southern based fans following these northern clubs. How many Charlton do you know based up north? I know a northern based Millwall
Going way back there were quite a few Sunderland fans that were based in Greenhithe at the old navel college.

Not sure if this is totally accurate* but an interesting guide none the less.

Other than Oxford and Wrexham, no more away allocations under 2000 means fewer issues getting away tickets.

    * doubt anyone gets 4K at Millwall, Charlton is more like 3,200
Some great derby matches in the league though :)
When we were in the Premier League the away end at the Valley was quoted at 3289, whether the away team ever filled that I don't know.
Plenty did fill it though some only took the initial allocation they were offered around 1,600. Seem to remember MU having a reduced allocation due to a spot of bother (over the top celebrating a goal or 2)....ie front few rows were not available.
Man utd had their allocation reduced because  their fans refused to sit.
Most away fans refuse to sit though, i can't think of any that actually do sit.

I'm sure their allocation was reduced because a steward was assaulted and their fans burst through one of the gates at the front after a goal and spilled onto the pitch.
When the all seating rule came in, every club and ground were sitting down, particularly in the away end.  It was United who started the rebelling against this in the lates 90s/early noughties and so clubs and local councils started reducing their away allocations (Middlesbrough were the first) and other clubs and councils followed.

Now it seems like the vast majority of away supporters stand, so its largely ignored.

You are right in the bursting onto the pitch and the assaulted which occurred in 2005, but the issue with United has started a few years before.

The same with the midweek matches. Much easier for the likes of Preston/Hull/Sheffield fans to have family/friends in London to stay with, or have a work office in London compared to the other away around.

Just one of those things which means northern clubs usually have larger following than southern clubs for non 3PM matches.
  • Far more northern fans will be working in London than the other way round also. I used to work with a Hull fan for example. He planned to return home after making his money in the City.

I don’t see a big issue with having a fan of another team on here to be honest but I wonder what would happen if I signed up on one of your forums as Charlton fan ? Genuine question - how would it be received do you think ? would i receive the same level of tolerance and reasonableness or do you think it would all turn to shit as soon as I pointed out any misconceptions about us if not before ?
  • I'd expect most sides to sell out a Saturday 3pm away allocation, will be a lot of Northern sides with big London contingents. Saturday 1230s or 5:30pms might be a bit different depending on who it is.

Doucher and Elfsborg would begin with a 'C'.

Might give it a go  -  once the 6 points,  c words, anorak and train spotting things have calmed down I’m not sure what other ammunition your lot have got - just more c words I guess and probably get asked to meet up for a ‘straightener’ if I said I liked gravy or mentioned winning things ? Sound about right ?

If you don't f*** off from this site now you train spotting c*** I'll see you outside the away end darn The Den.
  • There's a lot of Leeds fans down here.  Last year I was on a train to Leeds from Kings X on a Sunday.  I was getting off at Doncaster for an exhibition, but it was packed with Leeds fans because they were at home.

More often than not when we have been playing at Elland Road, there has been more Leeds on the train from London than Charlton.

To be fair, Millwall’s away support last season represented just over 7% ratio of the average number of home fans at The Den. That’s a good ratio. Not amazing, but not awful either. It’s about the average across the EFL. Especially when you factor in the fact that all Millwall away games are all ticket & members only, the northern nature of the division last season, & that Millwall have played nine consecutive seasons of Championship football. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

If Charlton average 16,000-17,000 home fans next season, they’d need to average c1,200 to match that ratio. I am certain that will happen in a season after promotion. But would that be the case after 8 seasons, with an all ticket & members only restrictions? Very much doubt it. Indeed, I can remember going to London derbies in the PL with my dad, where Charlton had’t sold out!

Let’s be honest, compared to Leeds, Wednesday, Portsmouth, Plymouth… Millwall & Charlton fighting over away turn outs is like two bald men fighting over a comb. Pointless!
As an aside, Millwall averaged 1,400 away fans on their return to the Championship. Albeit after only two years away. That represented 12% of the average home support at the time. Which is a good ratio (again, especially as all-ticket & members only). If Charlton have a similar ratio this coming season, that’ll be a c1,900 to 2,000 average away following.

They’ve got little supporters clubs all over the country. You see all sorts of Leeds flags, south coast whites, Romford whites, Derbyshire whites, loads of them. Glory hunters left over from their 70’s heydays or second generation glory hunters

Whilst I don't particularly like going to Leeds and am still scarred from '87, I have to say that they have one of the best away followings in the country.  When they have nothing to play for they still take thousands, fair play tbf.

The continual Millwall posts/love in were because you said you were responding to previous posts.

Now you are replying to your own Millwall posts FFS!

    You are blatantly obsessed.

We don't want to here about your obsession.

    Post it on their forum.
It was an aside. Not a reply.

I would, but Millwall fans aren’t that interested in stats. Charlton fans are. The amount of times I have seen it get lairy in pubs as Charlton & Palace fans shout insults at each other about attendances. Someone’s ribena & cheese & onion crisps went flying once.
