Along with the Beatles is responsible for popular music being seen as an art form.
God only knows is up there with Waterloo sunset, golden slumbers from that era to really scratch some itch in my brain when I listen to it that very few pieces of music can reach.
My first real music 'passion' as a teenager was the Beach Boys, just before the Beatles, loved the (fantasy ?) sounds of permanent summer at the beach .. 1st album I bought, 'Shut Down Vol 2'
Brian was a bit of a genius until (reportedly) LSD befuddled his talent. Still, 82 is a fair innings and he is the last of the three Wilson Brothers to go. Unfortunately the BB's story is not a very happy one, but Brian's music always seemed happy and meaningful to me, especially his early work. Remember his daughters were members of a talented group, Wilson Phillips, back in the day, all in all a talented family
Growing up, the Beach Boys were sort of given - always there.... Must admit I took them for granted. That all changed when I listened to their Album Holland. It then occurred to me that someone from that band had to have written all the classic masterpieces that preceded this Album. God only knows, good vibrations and many others have all got many things in common but for me the most impressive thing about them is how they create anticipation by presenting a small mysterious crack for the listener, before opening the door to a lush sonic garden, and it feels endless...
If you get a chance watch Love and Mercy the movie.....he was a musical genius.....so many soundtracks from my youth and I used to live in Manhatten Beach where they were from.....RIP
Just checked the date and it was 21st June 75 when I was on the pitch at Wembley in my youth and California came to London on that warm day.
Elton John was top of the bill but the Beach boys stole the show with lyrics that were simple but genius and the roller coaster that was my youth peaked that day when a confirmed atheist like me was taken to a musical wordsmith joyous heaven.
Really sad news. So many great songs and albums, Surfs Up, probably my favourite.
Great call sillav, amazingly few have heard the fantastic music he made from 'Smile' and beyond.

There is nothing like Smile which is why it is so special. I tried to explain to people the significance of Brian and Van Dyke Parks trying to put an album together of music made in sections, took six months to do that with Good Vibrations, to attempt to do that with an album is mind boggling.

Wilson was a musical genius without a doubt, the way he manipulated sound and layered songs was groundbreaking.
