    War time programmes, especially reserve games, are very rare as few were printed and fans were encouraged to recycle them to help the war effort.

    This reserve programme v Leytonstone, one of the many teams that merged to became
    Dagenham & Redbridge, was purchased at auction recently.

    Cyril Hammond became a first team regular after the war and Charlie Hall was long time trainer/physio at the Valley.

    H Shirmpton was Jean's brother (I may have just made that up)

    Unusual glass object donated yesterday we are trying to identify.

     We doubt we'll see anything similar in the refurbed club shop when it re-opens on Monday.

    Cyril ‘squibs’ Hammond went to same primary school as Reeves, Bowman and Penfold.

    Harold Shrimpton played cricket for Siemens for many years and was reputed to have turned down a professional offer from Kent.

    First of the newly acquired programmes is from 1925. Aberdare Athletic joined the @EFL in 1921 alongside @CAFCofficial but left the league in 1927 and folded in 1928. They would have been Nathan Jones' local league club had they survived.


    4,000 saw #cafc win 5 - 1.


    Why were we kicking off at 3:15? I know the spanners did for ages so the dockers could get there after clocking off, but why did we?

    Probably the same reason.

    Working class men worked on Saturday mornings then and north Charlton was a heavily industrilised, working class area so men would leave the factories that lined the river and come to games, possibly via the pub

    A couple of museum volunteers were lucky enough to visit Paul Ellis, life long fan and well known to anyone who collects Charlton programmes. yesterday.

    Paul also worked for the club for many years.

    Paul was kind enough to loan us one of his many rare programmes, this 1921 reserve game was v
    Exeter in the Southern League.

    We won 3-0 Att: 5,000.

    We’re now only missing 4 Combination home programmes (2 each v Chelsea & Arsenal), a Woolwich Cup match against Woolwich and a friendly against RAF (Henlow) to complete the 1921/22 season, our first as a league club.

    Is there any evidence of when programmes were first introduced at Charlton?
    And do you know if the 4 you are missing from that first season are around in other collections at all or just never seen them?

    That’s good. Last time I saw him was a few years ago and was shuffling along with a walking frame and didn’t look great.
