The main concern I am seeing in the thread is re: jobs i.e. AI will replace human labour

I can see how this would be a concern on a personal level

On a societal level, this COULD be seen much more positively if we design a society akin to people receiving Universal Basic Income while the AI and robots do the lion share of the work...

It's achievable and in the not too distant future, too

Agreed. If countries can agree how to offer universal basic income we could have a revolution akin to the Industrial Revolution. However, I am not convinced the hate and selfishness shown by trump and others (innate human behaviours) will allow this. We are 30-50 years away from the mental and cultural shift required.

I wish I were as optimistic. We can't even get corporations / billionaires to pay proper tax right now. The idea that they'd fund everyone to live on UBI feels pretty far-fetched.

I recall an article where Roland said exactly this. Withering on about how only the best brains could foresee it happening.

The problem is the universal income has to be paid out of taxation, and the companies reaping all the profits from driverless taxis, et cetera will not want to pay their fair share of tax

    Agreed.

And now we could take the thread down a very political route.

Imagine if the "profits" went back to a central fund instead of a small group of shareholders I.e. to the many rather than the few. It's not inconceivable

I never said Siv was a communist and couldn't care less whether he is or not.
Siv in Norfolk was previously Siv In Urumqi.
I may be wrong but I thought he has previously told us that he lived in China with his partner and they now live in the UK.
China, to my knowledge is a communist country and ergo his wife/partner left.

Fair play. Info all spot on. Nice to be seen.
She wasn't "fleeing communism" though (my words not yours).

I actually would say I am indeed a communist. That is a word that's hard to stomach for many. Socialist is received a little better. Either way, at its most fundamental, my main reason for saying that is that I'm all for public ownership of industries and resources (as happens in China).

The idea of AI doing the majority of work for us and humans being able to focus on higher pursuits really brings this point into sharp focus for me.

(And I understand CL is no longer a place to take threads down political paths, so don't mean to do that)

I was talking about the above to friends at the weekend (they emailed their conveyancing solicitor after completion to tell them they should reconsider their career they were that bad).

Why have I never heard of a single decent conveyancing solicitor.  Moved 5 times, all awful, no one I know has one to recommend.

Just the law of averages would suggest there are good ones out there (or do they all move to another practice in law).

When AI automates the conveyancing process we are truly in the future.

I agree with you and I like to have hope and believe a fairer better society for all is possible.

However I don't think it's possible in the UK with our current political/media climate and Overton window.

It will happen to greater and lesser extents in other parts of the world. Regulations on AI, controls, profit sharing agreements, taxing it will all take place in various European and Scandinavian economies. The way things are going with green tech I imagine South America and Asia will do the same.

Here, we will collectively gaslight ourselves into believing that the positive changes elsewhere either haven't worked or if they have they wouldnt work here while we happily bend over and let large multinationals Roger us.

I'll caveat all the above by saying I think the UK is under the surface a bit of a tinder box ready to ignite. There are a lot of people who are fed up with our society and our lives. At the moment that feeling is all targeted in the wrong places and at the wrong people. We have a clear example in the US of what pursuing that route looks like, hopefully we can get some positive examples from other countries and start giving them more exposure /airtime. If a political movement uses on the back of this positive message there is hope for real change. We are 800+ years overdue on a revolution.

If that doesn't happen, things will continue to get harder for normal people, wages will be further suppressed, cost of living much higher, the exodus of educated young people in their 20s and 30s will cripple us for a generation and we will inevitably eventually follow the fascist direction as the US has.

It’s her bathroom but don’t know where the tiles came from let alone a tiled WC.  That pattern would send me cross eyed.

Yes I accept that it’s going to happen but the merits of this “revolution “ are I think less clear. We’ve heard it all before where the next technological leap will benefit us all and give us workers more time to do nicer things while the machines do those boring mundane jobs. It never happens and never will because some huge corporation is going to make us all pay through the nose for whatever benefit the AI revolution brings. There’s no altruistic vision here just bigger profits. Looking deeper into AI it’s pretty clear that it will eventually be able to replace 99% of jobs. What then ? Who pays for “the new leisure time” we’ll supposedly enjoy ? The way I look at it’s not which jobs AI will replace but try and think of one that it won’t. Forget The Spinning Jenny and The Rocket. What’s coming is literally going to change everything.
Exactly.  Three to be precise, according to Bill Gates.

Anyone who thinks new jobs will be created once AI is fully implemented is missing the point. This technology is not like other previous developments because any new jobs xill also be taken by AI.
