Anyone know when the players are back for pre-season training ? What with our season not finishing until late May & the new season not starting until the 2nd week of August I wondered if the players dont come back a week later than usual, seeing as the 1st PSF isn't until 12th July.

Sure one of the players said 4/5 weeks after the final
Yes, League One team probably. Could be wide of the mark but doubt it will be Orient or Wycombe which leaves 1 local alternative
League 1 and 2 starts the Saturday before our season starts
As does the Scottish Premiership.
Which with a week to go leaves a behind closed door friendly at the training ground against a Premier League team or possibly a game against a fellow Championship side away from home.
Gof previous when we played Bolton in a pre season friendly back in 2015 when both clubs were relegated from the Championship at the end of that season

Or an away game against a PL team like Brentford or Fulham maybe?

Brentford away at QPR that weekend. Fulham is a possibility

To be fair I just plucked names out of my head, theory stands though
So we usually host a home fixture even though they are loss making.
On that basis not sure why we bother and don’t just play away somewhere given the cost cutting has been very evident by a string of recent owners.
But I take the point the corporate hires are easy income by comparison.
I think we host them because fans like them (even if they don’t show up) and it must be good for new players to get used to the surroundings, possibly helps stadium staff get back into the swing of things a bit too. I think they’re nice overall but this season the quality of the pitch has to come first

is an argument I agree.
But if those are the real rationale you’d suffer the loss of a few thousand from corporate hires and get the pitch tended to as the priority id have thought and get the PSF benefits still.
But maybe the new floodlights will necessitate heavy plant / kit on the pitch so timing means it has to be this way.
More cynically the calibre of team we want to play want too much cash so away it must be. In which case so be it and may be the likely future pattern.

I think it’s more that the pitch didn’t have enough time to bed in last year due to the Portsmouth game so it needs fixing

But if only that you’d forgoe the modest corporate hires income too.

Fulham are apparently at a training camp in Portugal.
I think it's doubtful we'll play a PL team that weekend, as nearly all of them have their schedules planned well in advance. The only PL side i can see who don't currently have a game that weekend is Palace, so i guess a behind closed doors game v them could be a possibility.
Comments
The opening pre-season games are looseners so the level of opposition should not be a concern.
