Close. Oldham beat Southampton 4 3 and stayed up at Palace's expense. Palace lost at Highbury and went down. Lovely.
We once played Brian Hortons (when he played) Port Vale, as we were leaving two black and white scarved guys were being attacked and punched over the bonnet of a car in the car park. They were scarf fans not hoolies. A burley bloke grabbed the assailants (the two main ones) and literally threw them aside yelling ‘I’m Charlton, we don’t do that here, fuck off’. He then stood alongside the Port Vale fans with a glare that challenged any other Charlton fans to try to have a go.
The collection that those ‘best fans in the country’ Geordies had as Colin Walsh was stretchered off around the pitch with a broken leg.
I remember that. I also remember coming out of the ground and into the car park where a copper shouted at us to stop and suddenly started beating a bush with his truncheon. He looked up and said ‘they hide in there sometimes’.
This did not involve Charlton, but the guy later played for us, Di Canio.

I remember Arsenal being clapped off by a large section of the crowd after they had just destroyed us 3-0 at the Valley in the early 2000s. They were unreal that day to be fair…
I also recall Gazza being given a round of applause by the Covered End as he was taking a corner in front of us for Boro….

100% Arsenal. They need a draw to stay up, former player Ian Wright scored the first and celebrated like he won the world cup/relegated the stripey nigel bastards. I've always like Wright ever since.
Talking of the stripey pricks. We played them away in 2000 during the run which was ended by bottom of the table Swindon as mentioned above. It would have been our 13th win in a row and Kiely was known to be very superstitious. Anyway, the nigels were either in administration or heading to it and gave us the whole half hour wait stand of about 9k all of whom donated generously to the sos nigel buckets that they were shaking outside.

At half time in that match, there was a woman on the pitch with a microphone pleading for money to save Palshit - some Charlton fans shouted a bit of abuse at her - she turned round and screamed at the Charlton fans something or other - cue the whole away end singing ‘well never play you again’ over and over

We gave Kevin Philips a standing ovation as he got subbed for Blackpool which was well deserved and very sporting.
He then signs for the nigels in January and scores at Wembley to get them promoted.
Middlesbrough away in the same promotion season. Half their ground had been closed after Heysel/Bradford and the few of us that had travelled up were stuck in an uncovered corner. To make things worse, it was pissing down and there was no food or drink available.
After a while, the old bill decided to let us sit in the closed, covered stand next to us and even gave out Bovril from the urn in their van.
We won 3-1 and remember the stewards saying how well we'd played and good luck for the rest of the season.
Probably doesn't sound that remarkable now but in those days, away fans were treated like animals at most grounds.
I was at that mate. Went a bit west for us later for various reasons. Ended up staying in Redcar for 3 days. Its a bloody long story

Arthur Horsfield was a great player.
Years ago we were playing Stoke at the valley.
They were favourite's to go up, being near the top or even top of the league.
Charlton were being outclassed and Stoke were 1-4 up.
Near the end, maybe after the last goal.
The Charlton fans on the vast East bank, applauded the Stoke team.
That's why I love the Charlton fans, they appreciate good football.
They are fair not nasty, like other teams , like our near neighbours.
