Stupidest sending offs

Inspired by @lordromford ’s post on the Euro U21 thread, I immediately thought of a couple of Charlton ones that would top last nights effort and that this needed a thread of its own…

I’ll let somebody else have the honour of posting about the two bleeding obvious Charlton ones I thought of, though I’m sure there will also be others

    Reza at Huddersfield January 2016
Mills v Hull at the Valley December 2007
Inniss at AFC Wimbledon April 2022
  • Danny Mills so he didn't have to play at Xmas....

    Jason Euell vs Man Utd...

    Killer and Flash...
  • Sam Sodje and Danny Mills were both so absurd they felt deliberate (and subsequent revelations have shown this may even be true in both cases)
  • Although the stupidest one I've seen at The Valley was Mitch Pinnock for Wimbledon in the game Sarr had already been sent off in. Clear dive on a yellow to even the numbers. Absolute prick lol
  • Didn't Yaya Sanogo get sent off in a particularly stupid way that one time too, a game or two after he scored a hat trick
  • Danny Murphy vs. Arsenal in December 2005. Already on a yellow card and got himself a second for dissent of all things.
  • Me in 1973. I was clear through on goal (I'd probably have fluffed the one-on-one against the keeper!). The centre half grabbed my shirt to bring me down. As he gathered up my shirt, our feet got entangled and we fell to the ground together. The ref sent both of us off.

Thankfully, the opposition wrote a letter in my defence, and my sending off was quashed. The ref told me that I was being sent off for violent conduct when I hadn't had any control in the matter.
  • I think you deserved to go TMA, and that fake letter, naughty

  • Traore against West Ham!!
  • Deon Burton Vs Swindon

We were already a man down having Sam Sodje sent off, he was booked for dissent, and not even 5 mins later inexplicably handled the ball, getting a second yellow and taking us down to 9 men

The Inniss one wasn't stupid, it was atavistic, carnal, magnificent. A work of art, an act of nature. Primal and violent. Less stupidity, more no thought in the head at all, just pure instinct. Alright it was pretty stupid
It was an act of pure thuggery
  • Steve Brown at The Valley….red carded whilst being carried off on a stretcher.
    Much to everyone’s amazement.
  • Chucks against Wycombe deserves a mention

Has to be Killer and Flash after their bust up at The Valley FA cup tie with Maidstone in 1979...
  • Steve Brown at The Valley….red carded whilst being carried off on a stretcher.
    Much to everyone’s amazement.
He did own up to it being the right decision on CATV, but he tried to play the victim at the time, mind you what followed was amazing with the paper plane stuff...

I absolutely hated Reza - he was nowhere near good enough for English league football and he didn't substitute that with effort.

I think I went into a self-induced coma when he got sent off against Huddersfield.

The guy lives so rent free in my head i'm now sat at my work desk fuming - the Prince of Iran give me a f* break

I don't think the club have left a marketing catalogue on the seats since.
  • Johnny Robinson away at Southend one boxing day. The ball was flying out of play heading for row Z and a throw in for Charlton. Robbo was stood right on the touchline and he jumped about 6 foot to catch the ball and take a quick throw in, the lino decided the ball had not quite gone out of play, flagged for handball, Robbo got a second yellow and walked. That was a crazy stupid decision by the officials.

The two most ridiculously vicious assaults I recall were when normally "mild mannered" Peter Shirtliff deliberately kneed the Leeds player in the back of the head on the penalty spot at the St Andrews play off, and the time when he jumped two legged, with each kicked leg taking out a opposition player in the small of the back!...... here hang about, he got away with both "tackles" never even got booked!

That game with the two legged tackle by Peter shirtliff, was on Newcastle’s Darren Jackson. That same game also had Paul miller’s stupid sending off for spitting at a Newcastle player. Lennie sacked him on the following Monday if I recall correctly.

best hack ever, excellent economy of effort.

Konch getting sent off at the start of the PL home game against Chelsea is another one that’s just come to mind. TBF I’m still not convinced it was a deliberate foul and he definitely had every right to go for the ball as I recall - somebody put me right on that view if I’m wrong

Gilbey, gets a yellow for pulling a player back in a non threatening position.

Couple of minutes later does the same thing again, second yellow, then red and off.
That was my one. On a rare visit to the Valley and I'm treated to utter idiocy. Iniss at Wimbledon was also moronic.
