When we bought Djimi Traoure I was on holiday in Menorca.Athletico Charlton said:letthegoodtimesroll said:
It is. A couple of decades before we signed Pearson or Jones the UK had Teletext (pre-internet internet). He didn’t have to wait a week to find out…daveydanger said:
Sounds rubbishBillericaydickie said:After logging on to Charlton Life at least 30 times per day, every day for the past 2-3 weeks and
generally wasting hours of my life, reading rumours that rarely if ever materialise, I have decided that I actually prefer the “Good Old Days” before the internet.
In those days I really looked forward to Thursday morning when the Kentish Mercury was published.
I used make a detour from Liverpool Street station to Cannon Street Station to buy the paper, and if I was lucky read that Charlton had been discussing a move for John Pearson or Keith Jones.
Then I usually had to wait seven full days for the next edition to see if the player had actually signed.
In those days the rumours had a bit of truth about them, not complete works of fiction written by a 13 year old school boy in his bedroom.
What was that premium football phone line. Used to nag my dad to allow me to phone it all summer and the couple of times he allowed me I would be so happy but never learn anything of note.
Teletext was how I found out we had bought Djimi Traoure and Amdy Fay
I logged on to the hotel Internet to see what I could find out about him.
I logged onto a Liverpool forum and there was a thread about the worst signing Liverpool had ever made.
No guessing who won it 😢
Almost spoilt my holiday.7 -
It appears that QPR have hijacked Birmingham and Rangers for Kwame Poku
"Queens Park Rangers are set to hijack Rangers’ move for Kwame Poku who is out of contract at Peterborough. #QPR #pufc #Rangers"

I am not sureTodds_right_hook said:Just a reminder that this is the transfer rumours thread!!!!! Can we get back the back on topic please and discuss whether Will Mannion is good enough for the Championship!
This is why I feel Fabianski might be worth a punt.
We need experience in that position next season and if ( as is rumoured ) we signed George Wickens from Lincoln he has a similar profile to Will. Given the Poles age he won't be a long term option aimed at the most a couple of seasons which might suit Mannion's development. AMB could be loaned out and the situation reviewed again next summer

Not sure if that means they will pull out of the interest in Mothersille, or if they will want both.
I imagine if it did come down to us two, we couldn't have competed anyway so that rumour was a non-starter. They're likely offering similar or more wages than Rangers and Birmingham based on luring him. Birmingham allegedly offered Poku between 20-30k a week. I thought QPR were having financial issues but clearly it can't be that bad.1 -
Poku and Kelman up top is like a League 1 wet dream, but will it be good enough in the Championship?2

Poku was brilliant in league one before November then he got injured and wasn’t the same when he came back .sam3110 said:Poku and Kelman up top is like a League 1 wet dream, but will it be good enough in the Championship?0 -
A pig in a poku perhaps ?3

Really .. can’t see QPR getting anywhere near wages that them two clubs would offer plus European football with Rangers ??? ….Braziliance said:It appears that QPR have hijacked Birmingham and Rangers for Kwame Poku

Now this is the type of rumour I expected to see! Think Derby had some success last season with a GK from the Swedish league.king addick said:0 -

Obligatory YouTube compilation, looks absolutely huge and some quite unorthodox saves.3 -
Obviously that doesn’t show the rough bits of his game but he looks decent based on that. Uphill for his signature I’d guess.2
-
He shifts pretty quickly for a 6'6 keeper1
-
A Pete Cech regen, lovely16
-
Dangerous Brian stunt double0
-
Would have liked to have seen what his distribution is like because that's not really shown.
Sense if 3 Serie A teams and Leeds are in the hunt we don't really stand much chance. But looking to Scandinavia for keepers is a smart idea fee wise too.2 -
Only 6'6, ideally I'd like Charlton to sign a keeper taller than me18

Interesting keeper link, maybe we would be the only one of the teams linked where he would expect to be first choice immediately, which at 23yrs old may appeal for a keeper!
Poku to QPR seems a surprise, and quite funny how many Brum fans posted under the link that he is just chasing the money... Not like they just bought L1 or anything. 🤣2 -
There speaks an ex Roan boy.HardyAddick said:
I phoned from the fax line at work as there was no call records kept for faxes!
Clubcall. We used to have a phone at school that you only put money in to speak. Would ring from there and got quite the bollocking when we were inevitably rumbled!

I doubt Leeds are seriously interested. Word on the street up is here that Nick Pope is on his way to Elland Road. I notice Newcastle have been linked with Trafford from Burnley today.0

That seems like a downgrade for Newcastle. The Red Robin said:I doubt Leeds are seriously interested. Word on the street up is here that Nick Pope is on his way to Elland Road. I notice Newcastle have been linked with Trafford from Burnley today.8 -
Looks good in FM, sign him up.king addick said:5 -
In fairness it is a highlights compilation so it's obviously going to make him look good.ShootersHillGuru said:Obviously that doesn’t show the rough bits of his game but he looks decent based on that. Uphill for his signature I’d guess.
Someone could probably put together a highlights reel of Onana and Meslier and if you didn't know who they were you'd end up thinking they were great.0 -

i remember that summer well - was in Spain on holiday with family - me and my dad getting a newspaper or 2 every day me, desperate for signings info - 'The Hutch' was a big part of our holiday. Also remember being in France on holiday when i was a kid and we signed Simonsen - our holiday was cut short 2 days early to see his first game !DamoNorthStand said:I remember being on a lads holiday in Gran Caneria in 99/00 and buying The Sun everyday to get the transfer news. Year after we went up from winning the title.
Remember reading that Don Hutchison was signing and then we lost out at the death.
The others i remember from further back on the infamous Clubcall that fell through right at the death:
- Jeremy Goss
- Richard Cadette (sure we almost signed him from the scum)3
