Stupidest sending offs

  • Steve Brown at The Valley….red carded whilst being carried off on a stretcher.
    Much to everyone’s amazement.
    Clear red for the handball.
  • The Inniss red against Wimbledon is perfection. I regularly tell non Charlton fans about it, including a colleague last week. The video always gets such a good reaction. The touch alone is worthy of being shared - him flying over the top of the ball is the icing on the cake.

Saw some absolute belters in 11/12, almost entirely for players playing against us and mostly because of Yann.

Daniel Nardiello for Exeter at The Valley where he thought his shot had crossed the line (and it probably had) but instead of moving on with his life he shouted so much abuse at the linesman he was sent off. Thought he'd put them 1-0 up and instead killed them. We won 2-0.

Gary McKenzie for MK Dons at The Valley. Yann wound him up with some sly kicks and he ended up nutting Yann. It was off the ball but he did it in the box so somehow we got our first penalty of the night which we scored, and they were down a man. 2-1 win.

James Beattie for Sheff Utd at The Valley. We were 1-0 up in a top of the table clash and we'd just had Darel Russell sent off. Yann saw the danger and started grabbing a Sheff Utd player by the back of the shirt, tugging him back and then letting go over and over until James Beattie lost his mind and throttled him. Both sides down to 10 men before play had even restarted.

And one for us but it wasn't the player, it was the ref. Away at Oldham we'd already had Hollands sent off and they'd had M'Voto sent off. It was pissing with rain and the pitch had become a paddling pool. Wagstaff went to press a player and clearly slipped in the wet causing him to fall into their player. Obviously an accident caused by the weather but no, the ref gave him a second yellow and we went down to 9 men. Still one of the most boneheaded bits of reffing I've seen. We won 1-0 off a Yann free kick. God teams must have hated him that year.

  • Was at the Man City game when my nephew Kevin Horlock got sent of for a second yellow for Aggressive Walking

You are correct about the Wagstaff sending off as I was there. However, Yann scored with a header from a Wiggins cross.
  • Steve Walsh of Leicester felled Leaburn Snr at Upton Park, looked like it could be a red but the ref settled for a very long talking to. The game restarted, straight away the ball went over the top, Leaburn went for it and Walsh poleaxed him again. The ref duly issued the card, must have thought he had wasted his breath. After he retired, Walsh named Carlo as a very tough opponent, probably because he had to whack him twice!

Duncan Ferguson came on late in a game at The Valley, our old mate the Herminator always liked to impose on opponents, but the old adage "No matter how big and mean you are, there's always someone bigger and meaner" came into play and Herman bit the dust. Big Dunc was on his way before the ref got the card in his hand.

Yep you're right, I must have mixed it up with his equalising free kick against Rochdale. It can be hard to keep track of all the times he bailed us out!
  • Mark Ward for West Ham at Selhurst. Ref gave a decision he didn't like, he's straight in the ref's face being abusive. This went on a while, the ref had had enough and gave him a yellow. But he just kept on with the mouth so the ref gave him another yellow and he was off.

  • There was a game at the valley the season before last maybe, where had a player given a straight red. I think it may have been edun. He went for a loose ball. Their lad clattered him and the ref blew for a foul. I remember going "good decision ref, get a card out". He did...but it was a red for edun! Unbelievable!
