Chris Powell’s regret was being too loyal to the squad that got us promoted. I hope Jones is ruthless.
But we finished 9th without major surgery
Just 3 points off 6th as well despite basically only spending money on Lawrie Wilson. The togetherness and momentum in a squad in that first promotion season can do a lot if it's kept on.
I'm a bit surprised about this idea from Powell that he regretted being too loyal to his promotion squad because what choice did he have? Other than Ricardo Fuller on a free our signings were whoever we could pick up on a free for low wages. Dervite was good but Kerkar and Jordan Cook are two of the worst we've had, I don't think the loans of Abdul Razak, Danny Seaborne, Eggert Jonsson and Emmanuel Frimpong were the kind a manager with a lot of options makes either, and then next season he helped himself to Mark Gower, Richard Wood and Simon Church on frees, which are basically the signings a man makes when he's lost the will to carry on.
Would we really have brought Phil Chapple in to then only buy sh1t players or even no players? I think we can all chill for at least a month before getting worried.
I mean we should chill, but not after another month from now.
An exaggeration maybe but even then the season won't have started yet. I'm sure we will see new faces in the next 2-3 weeks.
We have an ownership group that seem willing to adapt and learn from their mistakes and put their hands in their pockets both on and off the pitch.
We have a new CEO who has a proven track record of overseeing transfers that push the team to the next level.
We have a new head of recruitment, who not only has a proven record with us, but also with the current manager whilst at Luton.
And importantly we have a manger driving this whole process who a proven track record at our level of improving teams and pushing them upwards.
Does that mean next season will be a cake walk for us? Of course not, it is never that simple. However the evidence at hand is that we are not going to about the wrong way trying to do it. Getting worried due to lack of signings now, or because under the most mental ownership group we are the football league has seen 'we were promised' the same - seems like just wanting to get worried for worrieds sake.
12th July is the date that matters at the moment, that's when NJ will want players in for. They could all arrive that morning for all I care, as long as the bulk of the squad get on the plane to Slovenia after the Dartford game

Is that date the start of preseason? Surely not.
It's the first match, the squad usually then fly out to camp that day/the next morning

Curbs said it recently, not sure I remember Powell saying it.
The overseas trip has always been the main deadline for me. If only half the final squad are on the plane, it's a waste of time.
7 new signings were on that trip last season. Mannion, Berry, Edwards, Mitchell, Godden, Ahadme and Docherty. Bar the loan in of Campbell from Luton and Dixon from Jamaica, all our business for that window was complete by the time they were out in Slovenia
The club said there’d be an interview with him once it was confirmed so I would guess either not yet or only recently.
I know his appointment was subject to EFL clearance but with his employment record I would have thought that would be a formality. Perhaps the EFL are all on holiday or only meet to discuss such matters every ten years. Maybe Dane is on holiday.
Probably busy finalising the fixtures that are released tomorrow, and in chats with Sky about how many times they can show Wrexham live.
Wrexham will be the new Leeds for TV coverage.
Not when they start losing and realise life ain’t all about them…
Regarding giving Macca a chance, if it doesn't work we have to wait half a season, January, until we can rectify our mistake. No LCBs in U21s. It would be stupid to sign a leftie to be back up for him. If only 4/5, all our signings need yo be 1st Xi. Our only get out of jail card is moving Edwards inside against less agricultural players and a better standard.of ref.
The latter two points may help TC, Fullah and Dixon perform better at a higher level.

Fullah and Dixon won’t make a single league appearance this season. Fullah won’t even make the bench

Funny. You won't give Gillespie a chance but want to give TC one. The thing is that there will be more big games for him to go into hiding .
Comparing the current ownership to anything Matt Southall promised is absolutely wild. The current owners have put their money where their mouths are to appoint NJ, Will Abbot, Dane Murphy as high calibre appointments. Hardly think NJ is signing that big new contract if he's been told by the owners that he's shopping in Poundland for freebies, I doubt we'll have a top half budget and smash our transfer record but there will be a good budget there and then it's down to Chapple and NJ to get to work and do the hard sell to players on why sign for us.
Not concerned at all this early in the window , the whole championship seems on a go slow signing wise. Probably not helped by the U21 Euros, CWC going on.
Personally don't think it is that wild. It is just two different personalities/viewpoints. I am difficult to convince/a pessimist/ glass half empty type, then you have the opposite who are more open to giving people a chance.
I will never forget how much respect Katrien had on here and Southall, I always thought they were worms. Not having a pop at anyone who did like those two, but I knew something was off immediately. Sometimes you believe what you want to believe.
Lee Bowyer was a no nonsense credible character, just like Jones, yet he still believed what wasn't true.
I am not saying they're con men like Southall, far from it, I just don't and have never believed we will get the financial backing we might need. They have even said themselves we are a year ahead of where they expected us to be. How can a club who are a Championship side historically be above projections being in a League we historically belong in? Statements like that make me sceptical of the ambition. And the whole talk of being clever to avoid FFP utilising the academy which translates in my book to "don't expect us to spend much money".
It is very early doors and like I said, I would be delighted to be extremely wrong as I want to see Charlton do well more than my judgment be correct. I am just expecting a disappointing window.
I do get the impression you're overthinking things @Braziliance.
There's a lot of us very jaded and bitten down by nearly 20 years of underachievement, the Roland years, the scammers and charlatans, even Rock-on Tommy 🎸
But that's our history, it's passed - and our future still has to be written.
No guarantees.... but you know, so far the current owners haven't really done much wrong, and slowly but professionally, are putting down the foundations for a solid future.
They are not going to want to undermine that by lack of investment in player recruitment. Expect appropriate budget and sensible signings.... But we' are new boys to the division and we're not sitting on Prem League parachute payments.
But as NJ would say, we're on a journey. Let's have some faith that the Club are in good hands and see where it takes us?

We did. Because he was a miracle worker. Then the cash got pulled out and the slide began.
That’s nothing to do with being loyal to players then is it
If SCP said he was too loyal im surprised as he dropped Taylor, Hollands and BWP as soon as he could and we still only just missed out on the play offs. What undid him was spunking all the budget on Button and Wilson then the cash disappearing the following season.

As much as we have our favourites, it's a ruthless business. You look at Parkie at Wrexham and he has had no qualms about losing fans favourites to benefit the team. Mullins* a case in point, dropped halfway through the season andnow on his way to Wigan on loan, with lots of platitudes about we would not be where we are without him,
There is no room for "Giving him a chance" "Repaying his loyalty" unfortunately if a player is not good enough and we can afford to replace, then replace.
*Welcome To Wrexham cover Mullins and Ollie Palmer being dropped and other players coming in. An interesting watch and coverage of the human side of being a pro.
It'd didn't work out for Macca when promoted with Plymouth, but he's also now a better player now than he was when he first joined us. If we set aside Plymouth didn't fancy him as a Championship level defender, what about his performances last season indicate he isn't ready to make the step up in level?

Yeah, but that was because Cash withheld his cash - and the 2 spivs didn't have a pot to piss in.

No Shooters.... Date of intense training and bonding trip to Slovenia.

Who's the imminent signing?
Can't wait! 😊

He must think we'll never sign a 20 league goal a season striker.
I mean, last summer's striker signing only scored 19 🙂
