Didn’t Jones literally say the list we are working from is the same whether we were in the championship or not.

Just that being in the championship will make it easier.
He did but I do find that hard to believe
    Depressing if true
    Why
Because we shouldn't be in the market for players who want want to sign for a league 1 club, while trying to not be relegated from the championship
Like Lloyd Jones, Conor Coventry, Kayne Ramsay, Macaulay Gillesphey, Matt Godden and Josh Edwards? Those sorts of players?
Of those only Matt Godden has had any kind of impact/ appearances above Division 3, Macaulay Gillesphey is next on the list with 4 appearances in the championship. Of course they all performed heroically in the second half of last season & while we expect / hope most on that list will be able to step up especially KR we need a significant step up in quality throughout the rest of the team.
Conor Coventry also has 12 Championship appearances (4+8sub) for Peterborough.
Lloyd Jones has 4 for Luton.
Sonny Carey has 48 for Blackpool
Greg Doherty has 80 for Hull
Luke Berry has 86 for Luton plus 17 in the Premier League

I’m not saying they’re world beaters, but Godden & Gillesphey are not the only 2 with championship experience

Coventry also had a very good half-season loan at Rotherham in the championship, another 16 games to his total
  • I don’t think we can underestimate the significance of the changes made back of house. New Executive Chairman, New Head of Recruitment, New CEO. Now I realise the new CEO isn’t necessarily relevant for last season but the departures of Methven and Scott have set the ground for real improvement. I believe and I think a lot of people think the same in that promotion was achieved a season early. The appointments made behind the scenes are I believe proof of intent. Not to splash the cash necessarily but to give the manager every possible chance of success. I’m cautiously optimistic that Nathan’s “journey” will be well worth buying a ticket for.

Spot on with your opening line, particularly if they are an improvement on recent times.
Should we stay up hopefully we can then build on that and see a chance of play-off finishes.

Comparing the current ownership to anything Matt Southall promised is absolutely wild. The current owners have put their money where their mouths are to appoint NJ, Will Abbot, Dane Murphy as high calibre appointments. Hardly think NJ is signing that big new contract if he's been told by the owners that he's shopping in Poundland for freebies, I doubt we'll have a top half budget and smash our transfer record but there will be a good budget there and then it's down to Chapple and NJ to get to work and do the hard sell to players on why sign for us.

Not concerned at all this early in the window , the whole championship seems on a go slow signing wise. Probably not helped by the U21 Euros, CWC going on.
Personally don't think it is that wild. It is just two different personalities/viewpoints. I am difficult to convince/a pessimist/ glass half empty type, then you have the opposite who are more open to giving people a chance.

I will never forget how much respect Katrien had on here and Southall, I always thought they were worms. Not having a pop at anyone who did like those two, but I knew something was off immediately. Sometimes you believe what you want to believe.

Lee Bowyer was a no nonsense credible character, just like Jones, yet he still believed what wasn't true.

I am not saying they're con men like Southall, far from it, I just don't and have never believed we will get the financial backing we might need. They have even said themselves we are a year ahead of where they expected us to be. How can a club who are a Championship side historically be above projections being in a League we historically belong in? Statements like that make me sceptical of the ambition. And the whole talk of being clever to avoid FFP utilising the academy which translates in my book to "don't expect us to spend much money".

It is very early doors and like I said, I would be delighted to be extremely wrong as I want to see Charlton do well more than my judgment be correct. I am just expecting a disappointing window.
I do get the impression you're overthinking things @Braziliance.

There's a lot of us very jaded and bitten down by nearly 20 years of underachievement, the Roland years, the scammers and charlatans, even Rock-on Tommy 🎸

But that's our history, it's passed - and our future still has to be written.

No guarantees.... but you know, so far the current owners haven't really done much wrong, and slowly but professionally, are putting down the foundations for a solid future.

They are not going to want to undermine that by lack of investment in player recruitment. Expect appropriate budget and sensible signings.... But we' are new boys to the division and we're not sitting on Prem League parachute payments.

But as NJ would say, we're on a journey.
Let's have some faith that the Club are in good hands and see where it takes us?

    Agree for the most part.

We got promoted, I am happy, looking forward to the fixtures tomorrow, looking forward to a full championship season as last time it was hindered by covid and I was going through some life changes that stopped me going footie.

I am just expecting an underwhelming window in terms of transfers. I don't expect us to replicate what Pompey and Oxford did, let's hope my instinct is wrong.
    Yep, let's hope so! 😊

I'm not seeing the point of being pessimistic at this stage, might as well enjoy the anticipation (while we can!).

But I do believe we're finally in much better hands than we've been for many years - they've appointed proper experienced football people, who've already  planned and tasted some success.

Much of the angst of many on CL is based simply on they don't know what's happening behind the scenes.
But the management team know -  and the rest of us, we'll all find out in due course.

Given the circumstances and the competition out there, we are obviously keeping our cards close to our chest.
I don’t have a problem with that one little bit, it’s a game of poker out there.
    Zackly, SoundAs 👍

It'd didn't work out for Macca when promoted with Plymouth, but he's also now a better player now than he was when he first joined us. If we set aside Plymouth didn't fancy him as a Championship level defender, what about his performances last season indicate he isn't ready to make the step up in level?
He got injured for Plymouth in that championship season and they also switched from a back 3 in league 1 to a back 4 in the championship so he had one less CB spot to claim. Didn’t really get a fair go with them and as you say he’s improved and looked every bit the championship defender by the end of the season.

We still need to bring in a left sided centre back to compete with him though, which I’m sure we will do
Agreed. If we're talking about covering Gillesphey's weaknesses, then I would hope the cover/competition is a bit quicker over the ground because I do see the extra pace and agility that a lot of Championship forwards will have could expose him a bit more than tended to happen in League One.

Glad he wasn’t a target. PA fans in the main thought he was lightweight and had a mini purple patch that made him look better than he was. Not a Jones player.

Chris Powell’s regret was being too loyal to the squad that got us promoted. I hope Jones is ruthless.
As much as we have our favourites, it's a ruthless business. You look at Parkie at Wrexham and he has had no qualms about losing fans favourites to benefit the team. Mullins* a case in point, dropped halfway through the season andnow on his way to Wigan on loan, with lots of platitudes about we would not be where we are without him,

There is no room for "Giving him a chance" "Repaying his loyalty" unfortunately  if a player is not good enough and we can afford to replace, then replace.

*Welcome To Wrexham cover Mullins  and Ollie Palmer being dropped and other players coming in. An interesting watch and coverage of the human side of being a pro.
I can’t believe we’ve missed out on Hayden Mullins again.
Well this is the recurring rumours thread

Just want to mention the goalie linked again, Noel Törnqvist.

I read the article and the linked clubs and for those that didn't the clubs are Leeds, Parma, Empoli and Cremonese.

The journalist, Alfredo Pedullà who shared the article is apparently very reputable, so the interest might actually be genuine.

The transfer fee isn't too outrageous. The Swedish club are asking for 22 million Krona, which equates to roughly 1.7 million pounds, isn't a crazy fee for a keeper of that quality looking at his stats*

Here is the wording and translated:

"Uppgifter: Leeds United, Charlton Athletic, Parma Calcio, Empoli FC och US Cremonese är intresserade av Noel Törnqvist, 23. Mjällby AIF uppges kräva omkring 22 miljoner kronor för målvakten.

    📰Alfredo Pedullá (🇮🇹)"

"Details: Leeds United, Charlton Athletic, Parma Calcio, Empoli FC and US Cremonese are interested in Noel Törnqvist, 23. Mjällby AIF are said to be demanding around 22 million kronor for the goalkeeper.

The bad news is, I had a look at all those Serie A teams salaries, incomes etc, and they of course trump ours, in particular Empoli & Parma of the 3 Italian sides. Leeds of course we won't compete with in a straight shootout.

It is a nice link, and it is something different, but just shows how once again we will need to 'break' the wage structure to secure a player like that. It looks like we can match the Allsvenskan sides salaries in the upper echelon, so he might even be on a pay rise coming here, but if any of those other clubs are interested we don't really stand a chance.

As per usual, I'm ITK regarding some signings that are semi-imminent as in it could be tomorrow or equally we may not get it(or them) over the line until just before the deadline but can't say anything more as I don't want to give away too much as can't be seen to betraying confidential information given to me in confidence. However I will announce the signing(s) shortly after the club does so that you are all aware that I was ITK the whole time.

However, I will say this with 100% certainty when (or if) the signing(s) are announce you will be shocked (or content) with the quality (or lack of) of the player(s) we bring (or don't) to the club.
You should work in politics.  A marvellous word salad that says very little.  Bravo
I try to do my bit, I know anxious addicks the world over will be wondering why we haven't made any summer signings, hopefully some cautiously calming words from myself as a self-appointed community leader will give them the ability to enjoy their summer.

Just a shame as on the face of it, he seems like a potentially fantastic signing.

FLW just today released an article saying they're still in for him, but no one has made a concrete bid:

    https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/barnsley-davis-keillor-dunn-exit-fear-raised-as-middlesbrough-charlton-athletic-circle/

Sounds like they will definitely look to sell this summer, it's just how many clubs are willing to spend the rumoured 5 million on a 27 year old who has only performed at League 1 and 2 level.

I am of the view he would be a great signing and I think he would do really well here, but that's a huge fee, and it ain't my money.

If he wants first team football though the PL or Serie A is a huge jump. We’d need them all to see him as cover to begin with and the player to want a guarantee of being first choice to have a chance from the looks of it.
  • Mulligan to Hibs then?

That would be the main attraction here, and the fact we are a London club in the Champ. One good season and the vultures would circle.

I always think keepers are worth spending a bit on. Arguably the most important position and at 23, we could get some great mileage out of him.

Anyway, sounds like a pipe dream as things stand.
