edited June 27 in General Charlton
Thought some of this was interesting.

No new info but a very relaxed Curbs chatting away before a round of golf with sniffer dog.

How old is Alan Hudson? He looks about 100

He's 74 but does look older, mainly due to personal issues after his accident, surviving cancer, and alcohol abuse. Often see him at Stoke and he is a great guy to talk with.

    Oh really. Didn't realise that.
  • Thanks for that @mascot88. He's had a tough time since retiring and got run over quite badly

A bloody good footballer in his day.
  • Am 30 minutes in and it's great that Curbs is still saying "we".
For all of his connections with West Ham I have always thought he's more a Charlton fan nowadays.

I did not realise he got interviewed for the England job.
Having had a second interview it must have been a flip of a coin between Curbs and MacLaren.
  • When I started watching football Hudson was one of the best players around. OK, he  was something of a playboy and he was viewed with suspicion by the powers that be, but on his day he could run a game on his own. When you read what happened after he retired, it's a pretty sad story.

One of the best players then (in an incredible Chelsea side) and is up there with the best I've seen. Sublime footballer.

Chelsea, I hate to say, had some great players in the early seventies. Hudson one of the best of them.

  • A very good open interview and good questions were asked.

I wonder, are Curbs and Harry Redknapp mates?

Obviously, they've crossed paths quite a few times and they're both west ham fans etc.

Curbs probably had a long chat with him prior to signing Di Canio.

I can't see them getting on well for some reason and they've probably exchanged a number of verbal jabs over the years.

    Two different kind of people.

Think allardyce was in the mix as well. Wasn’t that when Scolari turned the job down?
  • Curbs had no chance of getting that job and he was already aware of that.

He was greatful to be a consideration for it.

If he got the job, I think it would have caused a severe dent in his personal life and he's probably quite relieved he didn't actually get it.

He must have had a chance as he would not have been interviewed for it.

You can understand at the time why McClaren got the job. Won Boro's only ever trophy and took them to the UEFA Cup final. Plus had been Fergie's assistant at Man U, so used to dealing with big stars.
  • Yes, Mclarens association with United and being Svens England Assistant - helped get him the job.

Mclaren already had the experience of working alongside the golden generation egos.

If curbs got the job, players such as Gerrard Rio and Terry would just be whinging and whining all the time. Thinking they were too good to be managed by an english mid table manager with no European experience.

Curbs would have tried to bring them back down to earth but them lot were their own boss and probably very hard to manage at times.

"Why yoos takin mi off at afff time. You dont know what you dowin, seriously" - Gerrard

"Shut up steve" - Mervin Day

There was a simple way to respond to any player that thought they should automatically be in the England team, just ask them two questions 1) how many England caps do you have ?; and 2) can you show me the World cup and UEFA trophies England has won over the time you’ve been getting those caps ?
  • Curbs was never going to get it , the absolute egofest of that England team just wouldn't have worked with how he liked to run things. Too many players that thought they were big time.
  • Great footballer, very dedicated to his profession with a passion but regardless of that, John terry is an absolute wanker and he always will be.

Curbs would struggle to polish that turd at St georges training ground and they would often be clashing.
