  • Happy with Burke what we still need some serious creativity and a good RWB
    We (fans) need creativity.

    I’m not sure Jones does
Yeah I fully agree with this , Jones is never going to sign some European style No10 that can pick a pass and unlock a defence with a trick but offers nothing out of possession. He'd rather stick with Berry running his socks off in that position.

Think when add extra midfielders (I'm not counting JRC as a midfielder) they'll be midfielders that can physically compete and be box to box types as opposed to creative playmakers
  • Whoever we get in RWB/MIDFIELD they need to be strong with pace but more importantly be able to pick a pin point pass - let's face it that was one thing missing from SMALL was his ability to make the right decision to pick a pass or shoot and 50% of the time his execution of either was poor (a player that was passionate and showed glimpses in a game of his full potential - but in a season at league 1 level was unable to master it)

Fun fact for you, growing up his Mum lived on the same street in Mottingham as former Charlton supporters club chief Steve White.

We didn’t need one last season, despite the cries on here that we desperately did. We signed Gilbert and he barely played, and we looked better with Berry on the pitch. Agree we won’t be adding that kind of player because we just don’t need one

Carey can play in the 10 but one thing I noticed about him in the pictures from training is how tall he looks, not your typical light weight attacking  player .

More on JRC from Blackburn pal:

I like him but he’s not going to fit in Ismael’s system. He was great 2 seasons ago for us under Jon Dahl Tomasson. Bit of a utility player. Wears his heart on his sleeve, likes a tackle and gets forward if given the freedom. All action type who can play down the right or in midfield. Was easily worth a couple of million two seasons ago but has lost his place and his way a bit.

When you are a utility player you can fit into most positions or systems like Steve Gritt for the older CL members !
It would be JRC versatility which would attract him to Chappel and Jones.
  • From what I've seen of Rankin-Costello, he's very much an NJ player in that he's very functional, solid and not a fancy type player.

He's not the RWB I'd choose but then we should know by now that NJ values consistency and solidity over technique and skill. For us in our first season in the Champ he's probably the type of player we need to ensure we stay up, rather than the type we'd want. The trade off with NJ's success is we'll never be that type of ball playing team.
  • Thought Costello was another player who struggles with injuries, check out Blackburns forums and a few bits on twitter and it seems to be the case

This is a bit hard to ignore. If we sign him, that's 3 players on the spin who have had injury issues, and whose fan base are happy to see them off the wage bill.

We signed Kaminski and you hear fans say he was never gonna play league 1, we sign Tanto and the overwhelming majority of Stockport fans appear gutted.

Never like it when you hear "good to get off the wages" "if they can keep him fit" etc. People will of course say Yann or whatever other example, but that's 3 players in a row. Cody Drameh sounded a bit more promising.
    You’re not negative though! ;-)
    Telling the truth is negative?

Indeed. He thinks we need a more athletic version of Docherty I reckon. A ball carrier who can press. As discussed above, he may think it is Anderson.

We are in the Championship now though, as you go up the leagues, as must your options and quality. Currently we have a squad that would contend the League 1 title, but will probably struggle in the Championship.

As for all the stuff about Jones not wanting a creative mid, that just isn't true. We have been in for Galbraith, we allegedly want DKD (unless that was CL bullshit) and we are now being linked with another attacker. It is more so we have a budget, and silky players like that aren't cheap or easy to find, they're in demand.

If you listen to his interviews he keeps mentioning about wanting more in the middle etc. There isn't a manager on earth that doesn't want an attacking midfielder that can bang in 10+ goals or make over 10 goal contributions, and if there is, I imagine they only say so publicly to keep their employers happy.

If we’re never going to sign a player that can pick a pass & unlock a defence then why did we bid for Galbraith?….& why does Jones keep saying he wants more fluidity in the middle of the park.

IMO Jones does want more class & creativity in the middle. It’s just difficult to find a player that can give us the above & a) be within our budget & b) not have better offers from clubs higher up the pyramid.
Galbraith was looked at to play wing back for us most likely, where we do need someone who can create. I can’t see Jones trusting him in the middle for us

Even if he was for the middle, Galbraith is an example of what I have mentioned previously. A championship quality midfielder that’s brilliant on the ball and decent without the ball is just never going to sign for us as there will always be clubs higher up the food chain interested in that type of player

    .
  • I love what Nathan has achieved at our club & I respect him. Costello runs a lot which is great but I think we need a bit of pedigree especially in midfield. That’s difficult with our budget & who we’re up against. I’m guessing players that have a past fitness issue makes it easier for us to compete for their signature.
He’s never played below championship level I think that would be pedigree enough
Slight wonder whether he thinks he took big for Charlton and will be an unsettling influence on the dressing room. Have no knowledge if him as a player or person, but the fact he was at Man Utd academy, then settled for Blackburn (turned down Chelsea) may indicate that he thinks he's All That!

Hope he is of course and runs through walls for the team.

I think we can be pretty sure with any of our signings that they are good characters, can clearly see that’s been a very important part of our squad build. And even if they are a bit off, we’ve got the right environment to bring them in line quickly

Good age at 25, good height at 6ft and to say he’s versatile would be an understatement.

    * and a goal and assist when they beat Millwall 4-3 to knock them out the play offs. I’m sold
Interesting stats - where did you get this graphic ??? Just thinking about Jones’s style of high energy pressing football - this versatile championship young physical player fits the bill.  I’d imagine in this league he would have to use all five subs to maintain that level of intensity.  Makes it a strong rumour imo
    That's transfermarkt
  • Do we really need more defenders ?

Contend for the title in league one but got the second most points from January with the squad that has now been strengthened considerably.

Think the only way we're going to get this good on the ball CM realistically is a PL Loan on a youngster like we did with Gallagher or Cullen.

The Luke Harris rumour is a weird one because I don't really see the fit.

Remember NJ got very frustrated with Small's inconsistency and even subbed him at half time once or twice. I suspect NJ did not fight very hard to keep him.
I think this is absolutely right. Small was fantastic at getting us up the pitch very quickly, and providing some X factor but I suspect your right that he didn't value his inconsistency and individualism.  Probably explains why as fans we really liked him, in a not very creative team and also why as you say NJ didn't break the bank to keep him.
