  • I love what Nathan has achieved at our club & I respect him. Costello runs a lot which is great but I think we need a bit of pedigree especially in midfield. That’s difficult with our budget & who we’re up against. I’m guessing players that have a past fitness issue makes it easier for us to compete for their signature.
He’s never played below championship level I think that would be pedigree enough
Slight wonder whether he thinks he took big for Charlton and will be an unsettling influence on the dressing room. Have no knowledge if him as a player or person, but the fact he was at Man Utd academy, then settled for Blackburn (turned down Chelsea) may indicate that he thinks he's All That!

Hope he is of course and runs through walls for the team.
I’m not sure how you’ve got that from my comment. Do you think every player that’s never played below the championship beleieves they are to big for Charlton. Very odd comment

My concern around staying up next season (and how it relates to who I hope we spend money on) is around scoring goals against Championship defenses. I'm happy with the confirmed and rumoured defensive signings, but I just feel that it's at the top end of the pitch that we'll lack a little bit of depth and quality.

I'm still clinging to the thought that there are negotiations/offers on-going with Barnsley for DKD, because I think his ability to play as either just behind or as part of the front two is something that could help make the difference. Godden may struggle to play every game (but hopefully can), and Leaburn is going to have to be pretty carefully managed until he is fit. That leaves you with Campbell and Olaofe (who, between them, ideally need to play a lot), then into Ahadme (who you would assume would be offloaded) and the young lads (some of whom really need to keep learning in L1/L2). Add in Berry's time on the sidelines last season in the 10 role (which is supported at least by the signing of Carey), and you have an attacking force that could look threadbare by Christmas with a couple of injuries.

I am fearful that it's just Carey for that 10 role and we're done. However, I just think that DKD adds capacity to a couple of roles if we could get that over the line. I think it's more likely Boro do that deal at this stage, unfortunately.

If we have one marquee signing still to come, I hope it's DKD.
We had 18 different goal scorers last season, I think we will share things around a lot this season too. Godden, Leaburn, Olaofe and TC should all chip in, plus Berry and Carey

I actually think Berry will start most games in the 10, think he’s quite underrated by our fans and is very important to how we play

My biggest concern is that we need a good set piece taker, which we don’t currently have in the squad other than Edwards from throw ins. Derby, Oxford and pompey were all in the top 6 for set piece goals last season. We did well from them last season but need someone with consistently good delivery

Happy with Burke what we still need some serious creativity and a good RWB
    We (fans) need creativity.

    I’m not sure Jones does
Yeah I fully agree with this , Jones is never going to sign some European style No10 that can pick a pass and unlock a defence with a trick but offers nothing out of possession. He'd rather stick with Berry running his socks off in that position.

Think when add extra midfielders (I'm not counting JRC as a midfielder) they'll be midfielders that can physically compete and be box to box types as opposed to creative playmakers
We didn’t need one last season, despite the cries on here that we desperately did. We signed Gilbert and he barely played, and we looked better with Berry on the pitch. Agree we won’t be adding that kind of player because we just don’t need one
We are in the Championship now though, as you go up the leagues, as must your options and quality. Currently we have a squad that would contend the League 1 title, but will probably struggle in the Championship.

As for all the stuff about Jones not wanting a creative mid, that just isn't true. We have been in for Galbraith, we allegedly want DKD (unless that was CL bullshit) and we are now being linked with another attacker. It is more so we have a budget, and silky players like that aren't cheap or easy to find, they're in demand.

If you listen to his interviews he keeps mentioning about wanting more in the middle etc. There isn't a manager on earth that doesn't want an attacking midfielder that can bang in 10+ goals or make over 10 goal contributions, and if there is, I imagine they only say so publicly to keep their employers happy.
Contend for the title in league one but got the second most points from January with the squad that has now been strengthened considerably.
Exactly, would contend the League 1 title like I said.

Galbraith played wing back all of last season, we need to add creativity from wing back so that makes sense. DKD I’m not sure any decent source has linked him with us, and if you look at where he plays for Barnsley he’s much more of a striker than attacking midfielder. If we did sign DKD he would play in the front 2, especially at this level in our team

Of course Jones would love a midfielder who would do the double double, but that’s just wildly unrealistic for a new team to the league to sign. Oxfords top scorer last season scored 6 goals, a new championship team is not going to sign a player capable of double figures G&A from midfield

We will definitely be looking for a midfielder that is better on the ball than Docherty and Anderson. But you can guarantee that they will also be very very good out of possession and not the playmaker profile loads on here seem convinced we need to sign despite last seasons evidence
There we go. That's what I am trying to get at. Why set a narrative that Jones doesn't want a style of player when it is what you have just said.

Last season can't be used as a fully accurate measuring stick. It could be had we stayed down, as we would know the levels of competition etc, we are now in an absolute shark tank of a league. What worked in League 1, won't necessarily transition to the Championship. The gap is massive.

We don't want to be like Wigan, Rotherham, Barnsley, Peterborough, etc. A lack of ambition will get you relegated more than likely.

Fun fact for you, growing up his Mum lived on the same street in Mottingham as former Charlton supporters club chief Steve White.
If he really wants to play football there seems little point in him going to a big clubs development team.
He obviously backs himself and may consider a couple of years playing Championship football will catapult his career and he will be playing Premiership football quicker than hanging around playing U21s.
I admire that he has turned down a contract to play football and that is an attitude that appeals. I hope it is with us.
  • In the modern Championship you need mobile players but surely the ability to pass the ball has to be mandatory in the 2nd tier over a few yards even if the Trent A-A or Keira Walsh long range passing may be beyond the skill set of many players.

I don't see why the all action in your face midfielder has to be bereft of passing skills. Either or really ?

    .............

Thierry Small's end product will improve around 50% at Preston as he will be used as an attacking left sided player with the possibility to switching sides if needs must.
Wycombe away when Thierry put in some greats crosses could become the norm if the new players all gel.
  • I think finding a playmaker who fits into the mould Jones wants off the pitch is also a challenge, hard working passers who can press and challenge like Berry does aren't exactly common. I still expect us to sign at least another one in the centre of the park

Clark would be a Docherty replacement/upgrade, though I'm not sure how much of an upgrade he'd be
In my view Docherty isn't good enough for Championship
He was bang average in league one
    So I have to agree
Might be a useful back up, but agree... no longer first team quality in this league.

I think Berry will be sub .  If the season started tomorrow , which I’m glad it doesn’t, I think Docherty, Coventry and Anderson would start in midfield .  Maybe Carey .

Apparently Rankin Costello is not in Blackburn’s plans and was looking likely to join Stockport but wanted to stay in the Championship. He’d be interested in joining us but has a preference to stay in the North West.
    Basically, congrats Preston
PNE would not surprise me .. he's from Stockport, always played in the NW, pity as he would do us nicely (I never ever considered him as a 'prospect') .. back to my old theory .. London is so expensive, especially rents/hotels etc .. this puts off a lot of players I am sure

  • Thought Costello was another player who struggles with injuries, check out Blackburns forums and a few bits on twitter and it seems to be the case

This is a bit hard to ignore. If we sign him, that's 3 players on the spin who have had injury issues, and whose fan base are happy to see them off the wage bill.

We signed Kaminski and you hear fans say he was never gonna play league 1, we sign Tanto and the overwhelming majority of Stockport fans appear gutted.

Never like it when you hear "good to get off the wages" "if they can keep him fit" etc. People will of course say Yann or whatever other example, but that's 3 players in a row. Cody Drameh sounded a bit more promising.
    You’re not negative though! ;-)
    Telling the truth is negative?
    Your truth.

I think it can work both ways, dependent on the player. London can be a huge draw for attracting players but equally on the same salary for a Northern team what you’d be able to get property wise just isn’t comparable.

Rankin Costello is described as a defender in some places, listed as a midfielder but described as an attacking fullback in the Blackburn OS player profiles section, and shown as primarily a right back but also capable of playing right midfield and centre midfield on transfermrket.

So, possible injury issues aside, is he a potential Thierry Small replacement?
  • edited July 10
Yes... We still havent replaced Small
Finding players with no end product must be harder than we thought… Preston found Small …
  • Cawley on JRC

Not sure. Radio silence from Charlton end. Blackburn happy to move him on as not part of their first-team plans.

Cawley was never going to give you Costello
  • We don’t know the context of radio silence so hard to read much into it, do they do radio silence when they are interested and want to keep it quiet or when they aren’t interested so don’t see the point in responding? Or is it both?

Bell as competition/ back up for Edwards seems a decent signing
Certainly has a ring about it…🤦
