Anti-social behaviour or am I just a grumpy sod ? What would you do ?

Working from home today as I usually do. Windows open as its 30° outside & need some air.

I live in a quite road in Bromley. Only traffic we get is L drivers practicing parallel parking. Very residential.

Since 9.30 this morning there has been a car opposite with both front doors open with quite loud music playing. Foreign music. Thought at first it was Indian but now think its Eastern European. One man sitting in the passenger seat. Not seen the car or the man before.

Just been out to ask what's going on. Bloke says he's working on the house he's sitting outside of. There is a skip in the drive half full. As far as I can tell he hasnt been doing any work today. He has a couple of beer bottles with him - one he was drinking from & another in the footwell.

I knocked on the door of the house in question & an elderly man answered (I would say aged 75+). I asked if he could confirm that this man was indeed "working" on his house and whether he could hear the music. He confirmed both in the positive.

I kindly asked if he could get his "builder" to turn the music down (and sarcastically mentioned that the man seemed to be drinking rather than working as was he ok with that, seeing as it's been over 3 hours). Music was then turned off & all seemed ok for 10 mins.

Its now started back up again. So, is it me or would anyone else have a problem with music blaring out from a car all morning.

    Play the game, Golfie.
Go out to your car and turn the music on for an hour.
  • It would annoy me too.  Presumably he's not 'in charge' of the vehicle he's sitting in and drinking beer; is there someone else there doing actual work?

It's not as I dislike noise. Neighbour next door is having a new house built on his land. We've had diggers, cement mixers, builders etc come & go for the past 2 months. Not once have I found it an issue. In fact they have been quieter than the car opposite.

But saying that the noise has now stopped & the car doors shut. Looks like the "builder" might actually be doing some work now.

    No, just him.

I did "threaten" about calling the police re the drinking.

The bloke is in a bog standard car.  Not a works van. His accent made me think East European & I have vibes of him being a rip off merchant......although the skip is now full so must be doing some work.
  • Ffs.
I get the looking out for neighbours,  and no the bloke shouldn't be drinking.
But should the same apply to anyone in the workplace drinking.?
Some of you do drive a hard bargain.
With it being 30 degrees out there today, how do you know his boss hasn't told him to fill the skip and that's his days work for the day?

Old people often don't take kindly to being told they're being scammed or even that they're simply overpaying. Their pride combined with a loss of mental faculties make broaching it very tricky. At least that's my experience with senior members of my family.
  • You could report the anti-social behaviour to the Council.  I imagine this will have no effect whatsoever.

You could also report it to the Metropolitan Police, using their website - https://www.met.police.uk/ro/report/asb/asb-v3/report-antisocial-behaviour/

I imagine this will have no effect whatsoever either.

Unless, of course, you accidentally mention the fact that you know he's drunk, he's in charge of his car and you're worried that at any minute children might be run over.

  • Update.

Bloke & car gone. Dont think any work was done today. Next door neighbour who IS having work done has just had scaffolding turn up. It looked like a couple of the scaffolders went over to the bloke & had a word.

Hopefully alls well that ends well.
It's Friday and the suns out, probably on the way to the pub to drink 10 pints of red stripe and sniff keys ...*sigh* the memories

    Make your mind up.
The skip was half full and then you told us the skip was full.
Oh, scaffolders I've seen a few of them in the past drinking on the scaffold with music blarring out shouting and swearing at each other.

Just Spotified it. Found a track called Techno Bhangra by DJ Kamel Supreme. It's far more fun than what I was listening to: Sheila Fogerty.
