Where to stay for 5 days in Crete in August

edited July 11 in Not Sports Related
Good morning all.
Taking Miss Oz to Crete when I'm back over in a few weeks and as we've never been, would love to hear other lifers views and advise on best places to visit and the area to stay please.
We'd like beachside accommodation, also walking distance to towns and restaurants, appreciate any pointers. 😊

  • Just returned from 2 weeks in Crete,  we stayed in thee Nea Chora area of Chania, beach seconds away from our air b&b.  Local bus was 2 euros,1.20
if you bought from kiosks doted around the area, to take us to a stunning beach by the name of Golden Beach,10 minutes travel time.
Spoilt for choice for tavernas and the architecture is superb.
  • Been to Crete a few times,Chania and Elounda I would say were my favourite places. To be honest, I dont think theres a bad place to stay there
  • Going to elounda end of August. Plan on doing the bare arse minimum during the day, but heard there's loads of decent restaurants etc. can't wait!
  • Malia is pretty decent

Loved Knossos. It gets some stick from the snooty professionals in the archeological world because of the restoration work.  But for an ignoramus like me, it provided useful context and gives a great insight into what it would have looked like in its heyday.
  • Literally a bout to do a day cruise to Spinalonga island, the last leper colony in Europe (now a tourist site) lots of other history apparently. €25 cruise, €20 to look around the island. A guided tour.

    I'll report back with pics

Go easy on the leprosy pics please Kap

  • Been to Crete with my kids the last two years.

We have stayed in Hersonissos, nice location with plenty to do. They have three local old school villages within walking distance with superb restaurants, Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and old Hersonissos.

Quite a few of the older couples were staying at these places.

25 euro cruise & an extra 20 to look around the island ??? Blimey times have changed since I was there. Boat from Agios Nikolaos stop off in a bay for swimming & then on to Spinalonga all in price though can't remember how much but it was very reasonable. Hey ho that's life I suppose, very eerie place, enjoy.

Been there a couple of times, to get the full benefit probably best to have a guide. Personally I hate all of these organised trips so I bought a book & jumped on a local bus.
  • eldest daughter is currently on her first girls holiday in Malia - not sure they are doing much sightseeing
Our eldest  grand daughter is flying back from there today after her first girls' holiday - just 5 days but look forward to hearing the details ....

Samaria Gorge is fantastic though can be tough in the height of summer, did it when I was 40 & again at 60. Not sure I'll bother when I'm 80  :D. The first time I was staying in Agia Galini & when we got back in the evening we went in our favourite bar & the owner asked what we'd been doing that day. When we told him he stopped the music & announced that we had just got back from walking SG so free shots for everyone  :D Lots of Greeks came over to say well done & shake our hands. Such a nice thing to happen.
  • I've no idea , but have a great holiday all the same 👍

How wonderful....we did it 25 years ago, a great walk. Our guide was a young lady who held the record for the quickest female to have run through the gorge.

No chance she will tell you the details 🤣
It will probably be all over social media.

Nice one, what was the record ?

The rep on our coach actually tried to bully us as my GF was concerned about the slippery slabs at the beginning of the Gorge & so we just took it slowly to start with. The rep caught up with us & said we were walking too slowly & would miss the ferry & if we didn't speed up she would turn us back. I fairly politely (?) told her that I had done the walk many times (ok just the once maybe but she really tried to throw her weight around as though she was someone important) I knew what I was doing & she most certainly wouldn't be turning us back so just carry on walking. As it turned out we were amongst the first from our coach to collapse in the bar & down a couple of ice cold pints. Just the job  :D
  • We are staying at Agios Nikolaos. As CharltonBob says the boat goes out to Spingalonga and on the way you have half an hour swimming off the boat, just enough time for your 60th birthday present from your wife, a gold and silver ring to slip off your finger into the deep.

If you like history the island is steeped in it from the original Venetian fortification through to the turks invasion, German occupation and finally the leper colony.

Not sure if you can visit the island without a guided tour but if you can I wouldn't bother with the guide, she was a waste of time.
  • I was there with my daughters for a week last August. We stayed in Platanoos, about a 15 minute taxi ride from Chania. Nice beach. Chania was great in the evenings, but Platanios has quite a lot of restaurants too. We took an organised trip to the Blue Laggon, and hired a car to visit some other beaches.
The downside was the northerly winds made for some quite big waves for most days, causing the lifeguards to stop anyone swimming, which was annoying as the waves weren't anything OTT.

Haha I doubt very much your going to be hearing many details Fanny

"Restoration" is, if you will forgive the term, doing rather a lot of work in that statement.

It's very much one man's vision, which may well be rooted in as much reality as my belief that I'm good looking...

I remember being taught about the Minoan civilisation way back, some 40 years ago, how potentially damaging Evans' interpretation has been.

That said, I do honestly believe that there may well be a paying audience for bullying jumping.

Not sure what time was....we didn't rush and our guide was behind us the whole way, from memory we had about half an hour to spare at the end.

When I went we were free to roam but having said that it was many years ago. The Captain of our boat had some kind of history with the Island, think he used to go there a lot as a child & I'm sure that he sold a thin book, maybe a pamphlet about the island. I must see if I can find it, strangely thinking about it I think his name was Manolis (or similar) which is bizarre if I'm correct as it was over 30 years ago.
