The Preston thing is a joke, also I doubt they'd sell to their rival, a bit like us where we'd rather Small went to Preston instead of Millwall
I guess so but if we came in at 2 and Preston offered 3 for instance I doubt they care too much about rivalry considering their not in the same division and impacting them that way.
I believe that the term ’marquee signing’ comes from the French 'une signature marquante’ which probably got confused with the past participle ’marqué.’ A marquee is a just like a big tent; I’d love to actually see such an event organised to attract larger audiences to an actual signing.
No, "marquee name" comes from theatres and cinemas who put the name of the star of the play or film on the hoardings outside, ie the marquee, to draw in punters.
So "starring Tom Hanks" or "Starring Tom Cruise"
In football it would now include managers hence why Rooney got jobs.
Clubs like Madrid or Spurs have fans calling for "big name" or "marquee" signings.
Don't think that is a Jones thing nor Curbs although Di Canio fitted the bill as did Costa.
He's probably already in Slovenia, and due to be announced tomorrow in the sunshine..
Are we at the point where someone looks into flight times from the north west to Slovenia?
I have just been at Manchester airport , and a woman dropped her ticket. Being the kind person I am, I picked it up and gave it to her, but not without looking to see what her name was and where she was going. It was Linda Apter but it was actually a bus ticket to Preston.
If we are prepared to drop £1.5-2m on a player very similar to small, then it goes to show it wasn’t about the money when he went to Preston. Always got the impression NJ wasn’t convinced about Small. Certainly wouldn’t have been about his talent, must’ve been around his attitude and he did come with a reputation.
Tbf, with Small regularly posting his best action moments he was always going to go.
Self promotion isn't a good look IMHO, and may have added to the decision to let him go, if he was hoping to use it to up his wages from us. My guess is though, that he was just putting himself in the shop window.

Maybe @bobmunro could give us a clue as to why NJ is so disliked elsewhere. My personal view is he did well with us back in the (Chris Powell) day, took on a challenging gig at Luton and did well, then Stoke and Southampton he seemed very stressed, but not to be disliked so much as wondered at. Either way I believe NJ has redressed a lot of possible negatives by his achievements with us, and previously working successfully with the estimable Chris Powell also hints at good qualities.
He did well in that short period for us and couldn't understand why we didn't give him the job permanently then. Perhaps our lot didn't fancy his personality? If so, strange as you want winners, a nice personality is a bonus.
According to NJ via Rich it's Kanu or Mbick going out on loan and the other will stay.
I think both need loans, not one or the other.
Kanu does because he needs meaningful minutes which he won’t get with us. Mbick is younger and probably needs to be in and around our training with Jones.
I agree, Kanu needs to be playing in the EFL somewhere to push on. Neither he or Mick are going to be starting here, but Mickey is still only 18 I think, and another season in the U21s, with some time off the bench with the big boys wouldn’t hurt.
Having said that, if we sign a decent striker, I could see both being loaned out - especially if we can’t unload Ahadme. With a longer subs list in the Championship, I can see him ending up as a season long sub.

It's Ramsay who does that not Small
They both do.
I just had a look and Small did it 4 times last season, not sure that's "regular". Ramsay does it basically every game. I don't have a problem with them doing it though, I like watching them
I know it's a pre-season friendly, but he should be using the game to make the best first impression. Check out Liverpools first goal in their friendly against PNE this afternoon and you will see Small's shortcoming........ his lack of nouse and effort when required to defend!! No issues with him as a forward threat but unless he takes his defensive responsibilities more seriously then he will not realise his potential and forever be a frustration for his managers/coaches.

T.P may feel more at home at Wigwam Athletic.

A marquee signing is likes of Di Canio, Costa, Barnes,Rommedahl
He was 20 and playing out of position on the wrong side.
Yes, Jones subbed him off early a few times but he started him in just about every game IIRC post Crawley.
That tells me Jones rated him and didn't see a problem with his attitude.
I think he'd already set his mind on going to Preston regardless of whether we got promoted.
If they play him on the left and give him time they will have got a great deal IMHO.
