Justifying our big spending, didn't Richard Murray say something along the lines that it was' vital Charlton stayed in the Prem'?
We all know how that turned out.
That’s true - but he could have promised that to Curbs.Oggy Red said:

NJ would never tell that to anyone. That said i doubt we've spent that kind of money on him to warm the bench so you'd assume he will start quite a bit. Godden is 34 in a couple of days so probably isn't going to play every game, and at the moment he isn't even fit, but both are great options to rotate as and when Jones wants them to.Chunes said:
Can't see us playing Kelman & Godden together unless we have to. Interesting that Kelman says NJ told him he'll play every game. The Red Robin said:
I can’t see Godden not starting but either way, that’s pretty close I’d say.ButtleJR said:
would be happy with this against Watford! Few headaches in there.5 -

Kelman and Godden will mainly share game time with Charlie playing more minutes than Matty who at 34 will be used sparingly but still a vital cog in the Charlton revival.
It's great that we have so many options when/if all the squad is mainly all fit.
The 16 players for CAFC who get game time during the normal 100 minutes match time are all important whether they start or on the bench to be game changers or come on to hold on to a winning positions or if we are under the cosh, drawing positions.
Plus the 4 players who don't get the nod are primed and ready from minute one in case.
Big squad effort needed this season to consolidate in the Championship.5 -
Happy for you to put me right on this Henry, did Dowie call the transfers ?Henry Irving said:

And Murray was letting Curbishley still chose the players to sign like Hasslebank after he left .. Dowie had no say in transfers ….. plus Murray did not put a relegation clause into any of the contracts , hence the reason you had players like Marcus Bent on 22k a week sitting in the stands for 18 months …Bailey said:
This is probably not helping the discussion, but, yes Dowie was a shit manager, but remember Richard Murray's role in all of this. Richard Murray brought someone in to pick the incoming players and deal with the transfers, Billy Davies turned down the Charlton manager position because of this set up, and that set up didn't change under Dowie, it rather suits a certain individual to lay all the blame at Dowie's door, especially when he was the one who employed him, much to the annoyance and against the advice of fellow directors.wmcf123 said:

One of the differences is that we are finally an attractive club to sign for. It was a hard sell when we were widely acknowledged as a basket case. Players will now be keen to join us instead of needing their arms twisted or desperately seeking a club. Of course there are plenty of other attractive clubs in the Championship but our dealings so far all help to set the tone.42

It's quite good that if a defence has managed to deal with Leaburn and Kelman for 60-65 minutes, then we can bring Olaofe and Godden off the bench. Some very decent options for us.

Perhaps Murray would have done, if Curbs had extended his contract .......but with only a year to run, Curbs had declared that he would leave Charlton at the end of his contract. The Red Robin said:Oggy Red said:

Murray made the decision to make the managerial change immediately, rather than have a manager who was running down his contract.

I wonder how many targets we've missed out on, because they've opted to go elsewhere... Galbraith or Woodman are the only ones I can really think of... Am sure there will be others, because the player opted to go elsewhere, stay where they are, or we just couldn't afford.
Just feels that everything has gone too well for us this Window... and Knibbs will opt to go to Wrexham and be the deal that clip our wings ever so slightly.
Come on Charlton, where is the customary kick in the bollocks!!0 -

Dowie had no say … that’s why the Forest manager turned us down cause he would only be a coach not a manager and would have no say on transfers and Davies said that ... so why did we bring in players that summer that Curbs tired to sign in his last window Murray and the bloke brought in to handle transfers were working of Curbs list of targets ….Henry Irving said:

Dowie had too much say, signing players from agents he was "mates" with. I wonder why?
M Bent was never on £22k a week. I still have the spreadsheet of the wages from that time at home somewhere. No one was on that much.2 -

I’m guessing it’s Knibbs or Donley and not both. Surely Spurs wouldn’t want to send Donley here if we had Berry, Carey, Knibbs and potentially TC as competition. They’ll want him to have guaranteed game time13
-
They can definitely play together. Because they both score goals people seem to think they are similar players. They really aren’t that similar. Kelman is maybe similar to a younger Godden but the Godden we have now would work fine with Kelman. Kelman can run in behind and run the channels, Godden can compete with the defenders and win duels and then we’ve got 2 players that will be in the box to finish chancesChunes said:

I'd probably prefer Knibbs. What I'm loving the most with this squad, and the one last season, is how unreliant we've been on loans.fenaddick said:I’m guessing it’s Knibbs or Donley and not both. If we have a "decent" season, we'll go into next season having to worry about losing any outgoings that we choose to sell. But otherwise it'll be primarily about strengthening further.14 -
Knibbs suits our style more than Donley, and would also be our player rather than developing one for Spurs. Definitely rather we got Knibbs which is looking likelyForeverAddickted said:

Agree. Hopefully NJ saying he doesn’t think we need to loan anyone is because we’re close to signing Knibbs so won’t need Donley.fenaddick said:I’m guessing it’s Knibbs or Donley and not both. From what Henry is saying and trying to remember the events, the refusal of Billy Davies probably led to 'who's available' ? as I remember, Dowie declared that he wanted to go back north and wanted to leave Palace for that reason, he also stated, in court, that he'd had no contact with Charlton, which was proved to be false. Richard Murray's chosen 'general manager', whose name I can never remember, left when Pardew arrived, so from what Henry is saying the proposed management structure was never implemented as Dowie or even Pardew, would not have come here if it had.RonnieMoore said:

I don't disagree, Godden has more to his hold up game and Kelman has more to the technical half-turn and channel side. But knowing how NJ likes to play when everyone is fit, I can't see him not preferring a Leaburn/Tanto with a Kelman/Godden.NabySarr said:

Not only are we not relying on loans, the contract lengths are mostly 3 & 4 years....which means we aren't having to churn 7 or 8 players every season like we have been doing for the past half a dozen seasons.28

Based on how NJ liked to play it last season he wants one striker with pace to run in behind and in the channels and one to compete with defenders and be a focal point.Chunes said:
