The Mirror are reporting Alfie Doughty to the Spanners.
A few weeks ago I said that out of all the Luton players leaving I'd have Doughtu above them.all. I was laughed at saying his wages would be too high.
Probably still are Millwall can offer more wages than us seeing as theyâve been an established championship club for a while. With our signings weâre paying big fees but wages wise quite a few of them wont be on too much money for this levelÂ
On Small, Apter joining and playing RWB in the friendlies (so far) suggests we'll continue with a very attacking left footed RWB.
Knowing how ambitious NJ is, and that he'll be ruthless (the signings prove that), then my guess is Small wasn't seen as worth a ÂŁ10-15k a week contract when a player like Apter is a better goalscorer (clear from the stats) and what I think will prove to be a more creative passer (not Small's strength at all) and a better crosser (something he was inconsistent with).
Small's combination of pace, strength and tricks looked unstoppable at times, but if you're going to give a WB the freedom to play like a wide forward, then you want them to be a proper goal and creative threat, as that will justify that freedom. I can see Small's end product improving, but he's never going to be natural in and around the box in the way we'll be hoping Apter can be.
I think the aim is for us to be a better, more extreme version of last seasons team - Small can be remembered for playing a big part in finding this formation and style, but I can see what the thinking might be in the type of player NJ wants in that role.
I wonder if Small is having a few doubts about his decision to leave us. đ€
Would be interesting to know the reason he went in the end.Â
I get the feeling if weâd really wanted to keep him we could have. Guess weâll never knowÂ
I think Preston just simply offered way more money than we were willing too? Could be wrong mind. Regardless, they are a team we need to take maximum points off this season. Or worst case, at least 4.
I think we will start with three up top, oloafe and Kelman wide of Leaburn, with Edwards and Apter as wingbacks and Coventry with docherty/Rankin-Costello in CM. Looks pretty potent and plenty of options off the bench with Godden, TC and Carey.
Very excited to see how the team plays and gels.Â
COYR
Way too attacking. We will get turned over with a two man midfield.
2 sitters and 5 defenders , with three hardworking forwards isnât an overly attacking formation . Â
Edit - admittedly I wouldnât have Apter as a wing back in that system- heâd be one of the 3 forwards.Â
We would need 2 wingbacks who can defend, as with Edwards and Small last season. We would also need a 10 behind the front two, not three up front. Apter would play the TC role as a winger/forward with one of Leaburn/Tanto/ Kelman up front.
Oh for heavens sake - Small had already agreed a deal with PNE before the end of the season because he didnât know that we were going to be promoted. If he had known he would have stayed Its not really very complicatedÂ

We are a league up so itâs going to be tough, but if we can get Apter the ball in the areas Small did, even just half the number of times we got it to Small last season, then he will do some real damageÂ

That was always the problem with Small, there was always the chance he'd do something brilliant out of nothing... but almost as likely that he'd make an absolute mess of something basic.Â
Jones would rather have players he knows will always be solid rather than ones who could be lethal to either side.
Oh for heavens sake - Small had already agreed a deal with PNE before the end of the season because he didnât know that we were going to be promoted. If he had known he would have stayed Its not really very complicatedÂ
Wouldn't be surprising, but couldn't we have offered a bigger wage that only applied had we got promoted?
We've also replaced Small with a natural winger who scores goals, rather than another wing back who enjoys getting forward. That suggests NJ wanted a different type of player in that role.
Honestly canât think of a single reason to be hostile or snide about CM - other than muscle memory from the people who went all in early with the negativity towards him. On reflection he played a very important part in history.Â

Itâs funny when people speak with authority when they are completely incorrect. We had been promoted by the time he was able to sign a pre contract agreement.Â

So what ? - do you think his agent wasnt working prior to that point ?Â

Oh and by the way a player can sign a pre contract agreement 6 months before the expiry of their existing contractÂ

Itâs only a month within the same country, 6 if they move abroad.
But I agree he could have made his mind up months before, even if he couldnât sign anything officially until June.

Wrong again. Players can only sign a PCA within 30 days of their contract expiring if they are moving from one English club to another. The 6 months applies to players going to/coming from another country.Â

Are you drunk? Youâve literally said he had agreed a deal with Preston before we got promoted and thatâs why he left.
I think Small had very likely agreed a deal with Preston well before the season ended. Ok, not signed a PCA but nonetheless. I mean I certainly knew he was almost certainly off to Preston in the spring and I think a lot of our fans did as well.

Thereâs still some areas that we need to tweak for me, assuming we sign the two trialists - I think we could still do with another defensive midfielder as backup to Coventry / compete with Docherty, but how great is it to go into the new season with so much optimism, weâve been scrimping for years in the transfer market it almost feels unbelievable that we finally have owners who are investing with their money rather than words

Totally agreed, every club he has been to, he has left them in more positive place. And those clubs gone on to have success. He put down some important stones for us. As I say, love him or hate him. He has played a very important part in turning our club aroundÂ

for those CM haters out there.. fair play to him bring these owners to usÂ

Has Linda Ahadme unfollowed Charlton and followed Bolton?
