Jones did this last season. He spent almost the entire pre-season playing Ramsay at RCB despite then immediately starting him at RWB and only moving him after he came back from injury and Small was in place at RWB. I think he just uses pre-season as a chance to try stuff and take a look at certain players in certain areas, the real work takes place on the training pitch and friendlies are mostly for fitness4
