I thought we’d get rolled over 3 or 4 nil, that’s not a bad result at all.
    Me to.
They have a settled side just down from the Prem and we have so many new players who hardly know each other. It sounded like we made quite a few chances and it will be interesting to see how our 1st 11 perform.

It has been frustrating not being able to watch, what is the problem?

Not a bad result at all really it will take some time for NJ to find his best team but a lot of positives to take from that game

i I think Fullah might feature more than we think this season

Not impressed by the standard of Stadium in the Championship... Portman Road has changed a lot since I last visited there... Although that Muric save to deny Jones at the end was outstanding!!

                     Kaminski
         Ramsay Jones Bell
    Apter  Doch. Cov.  Edwards
                     Carey
                   ?      Olaofe

I think this might be what we might see against Watford. Unsure on who starts up top with Olaofe, I think it might be Leaburn but could maybe see Kelman chucked straight in after a start on Saturday if it goes well

I think against Southend we will see the above team with Leaburn up top, and then with Knibbs instead of Carey and Kelman instead of Olaofe because they both played tonight and the new boys need minutes

Opps, looked like the trialist panic passed to the opposition for the first goal.

Ipswich are a sharp team with solid investment. Good workout.

Two lapses in concentration cost the two goals from those highlights. Plenty to be encouraged by.

The result really isn’t that important but I can’t help but think , with just one friendly to go , we are going into the season undercooked . We should have played our strongest team available for 70 minutes tonight and again on Saturday  .
    That’s just my opinion .

     Unbelievable isn't it.
Car park must hold 1500 cars and it's full! And only one barrier exit!!
Hoping I get out in time for Watford!

As someone who played to a decent (ish) standard, we never played the team that ended up playing the first game of the league season in any of pre season games. Not many do.

I see your point but we kept trying things all the way through to the last pre season game. We did a lot of work on shape and game management in training. Seemed to work

It seemed to be a decent sized crowd.
Any idea what the attendance was?

A good run out. Pretty much held our own and it gave us a good barometer of where we are at.
Couple of things. Ramsay's Rolls Royce mode is going to be put under some stern pressure this season. He gave the ball away a couple of times after trying one of his trademark turn and go's and got caught.
Thought on more than the odd occasion our centre mid pairings looked overwhelmed with the quality of Ipswich's. Some of their attacking  play was breath taking at times. They shift the ball so well in the final third.
That said. They were a prem side 2 months ago. We've got a huge amount of new starters.  so no disgrace there.
A lot of useful takeaways for Nathan tonight.

Referee gives out a Yellow Card to someone, Ipswich free kick so imagine it was to one of ours
Booking in a pre season "friendly" ? Is that just a warning that he risks getting sent off or does it actually get added to their tally once the season starts ?
    No.
Booking applies only to the competition the game is played in.
Strangely, I don't think the commentator once mentioned the name of the competition but, thanks to Garrymanilow in an earlier post, we learned that it was in fact The Random Friendly in July Trophy and had we won it we would have qualified for the Champions League next season.

Personally I think that honour would have come a year too soon for us. Perhaps we will have a real go at it next season.
Maybe NJ agrees, which is why he threw the match with his crackpot team selection. Up the Addicks.

Think our midfield struggled until the last 20 when Coventry was on, suddenly we had some control and put them under a bit of pressure. Need him to stay fit again this season

Not long home. A nice evening of footy.
Ipswich supporters one and all were upstanding and respectful of the minutes applause for young Ethan, may be rest in peace.
As for the game, we were not at the races 1st half. The trialist #27 didn't look all that. Anderson gave the ball away numerous times. Alex Mitchell did well against the big CF. Olaofi has something about him, loves running off th shoulder of the defender. Kanu did his usual energetic performance, but lacked the quality to make any chances, the ball didn't stick to him, think he needs to drop a couple of leagues on a loan, for his confidence.

2nd half we made a better fist of it. Once the wholesale changes were made, we really came into the game. Jones had a brilliant header saved, was heading top bins, keeper pulled off a blinder to tip over.
A good run out, not sure if we picked up injuries, doc was limping a little not long after when he came on but seemed to run it off.
1st time at Colchester, nice little Stadium. UTA.

Liked their man who scored their first goal. Just what we need - someone who can run at defenders, go round 2 or 3 of them & then score.

I expect a bid to go in for him tomorrow....otherwise we have no ambition 😉😃.

I know you're semi joking but for clarity they signed him for £15m and another £5m in add-ons, making the Kelman transfer incredibly small fry by comparison

I wasn't following tonight's game, but confused why we gave 60 minutes to mainly backup players against the strongest opposition we will face.

But then the pre season schedule this season is a bit odd, as normally you do all the fitness games in the first few weeks, but then finish with the hardest opponent on the final Saturday before the season, with a team which resembles the starting 11. Instead we are playing weak opponents. I do hope not playing a home pre season game (against strong opponents) as the final one, to protect the pitch, doesn't affect our preparation.

NJ sort of answered this with Cawley, he said lots of those players have never played a Championship game of football or against Championship players (think he specifically mentioned Kanu, Fullah and Zach but fits for others too like Tanto) so he wanted them to experience playing against that level of opposition

Is that really a priority for the penultimate pre season game?

Besides the likes of Ramsay and Jones have hardly played lots of games against Championship level opponents.

That's a question for NJ. Ramsay played 45 mins so that's a decent run out

Just home - long drive back but hey ho, all good.

    Take aways were:

Kaminski has good feet and feels authoritative around his box.

Fullah is already a fearless handful. He gave Ipswich problems.

Tanto is rapid and will be dangerous this season.

Rankin-Castello looks cultured and can get stuck in.

I don’t think Dexter nor Bennett have shown anywhere near enough to warrant a Championship level contract. Josh Edwards shone compared with Bennett and Dexter just got more wrong than right.

Z Mitchell needs more loan time, A Mitchell will find the Champ too big a hurdle and think we need to release as a result.

Ramsay has to acclimatise to having to play a few seconds sharper. He should still play to his strengths and preferred style but has to quickly realise that the pace is a bit quicker and he risks being caught out unless he speeds things up.

Our players look fit and hungry - chased down Ipswich all game. 👏🏻👏🏻

Neither of the Mitchell’s look ready to play in the championship but with Burkes injury history, I doubt either will be loaned out in case of an injury to a starter.  I think Zac has a lot of potential and the best thing for him is to play every week on loan to a league one side,  I just don’t know if that is likely to happen for the first half of the season
