Further to my comment on the Costa tribute, can we discuss a best ever World side. Parameters even though not set now or back in the past, are 4-4-2 and their contribution in their era, not judged against current enhanced standards.
If I can kick off:
Zoff
Alvez Costa Maldini Carlos
Garrincha Charlton Iniesta Ronaldo
Messi Pele

Is the inclusion of Costa in your team a joke or is it serious?Gisappointed said:Further to my comment on the Costa tribute, can we discuss a best ever World side. I’ll have a go….
 Banks
 Carlos Alberto-Beckenbauer-Moore-Maldini
 Best- Cruyff- Puskas-Messi
 Maradona
 Pele
subs: Yashin, Di Stefano, C.Ronaldo, Eusebio,Muller.
Eusebio, Law, Charlton, Garrincha, Platini, Zico, Van Basten, Gullit, the other Ronaldo, could all be included, but you can only pick 11 and maybe 5 subs. (I couldn’t choose a spare defender and leave out one of the attacking subs).
Who is to say some of the pre war superstars like Meazza and Piola, or Alex James, shouldn’t be considered, but we don’t have much film of them.
 Good fun though.0

            Anything without R9 is wrong.6

I wasn’t questioning the 11 just Costa, there are far too many centre backs to mention who would get in ahead of Costa however it’s your opinion so crack onGisappointed said:

Feels very tricky to leave him out but you've probably got to drop Pele if you put him in.ValleyGary said:Anything without R9 is wrong.
Best XI of my lifetime (and actually trying some balance for this one) he'd be in:
 Buffon
Cafu, Nesta, Baresi, Maldini (that Milan defence was insanely good)
 Gullit, Matthaus, Zidane
 Messi, Ronaldo, C.Ronaldo.

            Costa in a world 11 ?
Are you on crack or something ?
 I wouldn’t have him in a best Charlton XI1

            Brazil 1970. Best team I’ve ever seen.2
-
If going for a team that would actually work rather than just stacking it with 3 attacking midfielders and 3 forwards, I'd go
 Buffon
 Cafu Nesta Maldini R.CarlosMakalele Pirlo
 Maradona
 CR7 Ronaldo Messi3

Lots of Garth Crooks teams here. Some of these would get stuffed by a peak Tony Pulis team and I think that's honestly the most entertaining thing I can imagine. Best ever XI getting turned over by Dean Whitehead, Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence because there's nothing Maldini can do about Andy Wilkinson overlapping him if Zidane won't track back. Maradona throwing his arms in the air in frustration as yet another Rory Delap throw flies over him and onto Glenn Whelan's face. Johann Cruyff sulking after failing again to track Matthew Etherington's late run into the box. I want it to happen now.6
