I flew back from Porto yesterday.

I was in Nazaré while there was a 'legends' tournament on and I was wondering if he could possibly turn out for the Porto team. In the temporary mini stadium they had built on the beach I was telling my two boys what a great defender he was for us, probably our best ever. I was hoping to see him and it was only 10 days ago.

    😢
    RIP

    Can’t stop thinking about this.

I believe it was in his first game at The Valley after only about half an hour that the song rang out from the Covered End for the first time? I wasn’t at Stamford Bridge for his debut so it might even have started there? Can hardly think of a player being taken to heart quite so quickly.

It will be belted out on Saturday that’s for sure.

It's very rare for a player to make such a huge and long lasting impact in such a short time over so few games. The only others that come to mind is Connor Gallagher, Allan Simonsen and Paolo DiCanio.

Shattering news. What a player - I'd forgotten he was only with us for half a season as well.

RIP Jorge. One of the small handful that I had hoped I would one day have the chance to thank in person for what he did for us.

Great player and by all accounts a very nice guy as well. Followed him on Instagram and was very clear that our affection for him was reciprocated.

I wonder if the club could leave the no.27 unallocated this season, out of respect.

Really really sad to hear this news. One of my favourite Charlton players hence the sign in. Apart from the games he played for Addicks, proud to see him captain Champions league winners Porto as a former Addick. RIP JORGE

Well said both.   Says a lot about the man that I had forgotten that he didn't even pay a full season.

    RIP Jorge.

What a great player and as others have said what a privilege to see him play for Chariton. The ball was certainly a nuisance in some games i saw him play.

I recall against Southampton at the valley, i was watching him at a corner where he was marking James Beattie. He wasnt watching the ball and gave Beattie a clump on the chin, (now this would be a pen by VAR). He helped Beattie to his feet and walked with him back to the centre line. Beattie didnt touch his face until Costa turned his back then he rubbed it,

Beattie was subbed shortly after but turned and ran about 25 yards to shake his hand.

A friend of mine who is a Saints season ticket holder went to a players evening where Beattie was there. He said Beattie was asked who is the toughest player he had faced. He said he mentioned Costa and recalled the incident above and he said Costa was the first to greet him in the players lounge and thanked him for not belly aching to the ref about it.

A worthy player to have a minutes silence/applause prior to the kick off on Saturday.

    RIP Jorge.

Legend of a player. I was a mascot away at Spurs that season .... he signed my shirt and I have a picture with him. Still have the shirt (which almost now fits my daughter).

    RIP Jorge
What a great memento to have

I wonder if we could try and play Porto next preseason as a tribute game for Jorge?

It's a testament to the man of how loved he was here despite only being with us such a short time, was one of the first players I really remember growing up and he was the level of defender I came to expect, yet not seen anyone get close since.

    RIP

Absolutely rotten news, so young too, the kind of news which is unwelcome and you don't want to hear.
What a fabulous player, one of the best and one of my favourites.
    Bless.

Hope the club has a minutes applause for him pregame Saturday
27th minute we sing the song (or we’ll sing it anyway during the applause)

I know we're not a tifo-type club, but if we could turn something around before the weekend, that would be special.

    "He comes from Portugal"
The club were already planning a activation type thing for being back in the championship (hope they do something for Costa as well)

If enough of us petition the club, maybe.

I doubt he would have wanted that though, Mourinho was talking about how he wouldn’t want to cry in the moment just get on with the game and win. Give the 27 to a hard hitting CB though , sing the song he loved and love you life being the leader he was.

    My favourite memory of Jorge...

It was the home game against Manchester United. (I just checked...we lost 2-0) We were attacking, and a United defender cleared the ball.

The ball was going out of play for a Charlton throw, inside the United half, Jorge just shepherding it out of play, when a snarling Roy Keane came charging out, trying to keep the ball in play...

    And ran into 'The Tank'...

Bounced off, and fell to the ground...

But it was Jorge's reaction, I remember. He looked, thoroughly down his nose at Kean, sort of measuring him up and down, like he was measuring the size of a bug he'd just squashed...

Leading me to shout "Oi! Keano! Have you met The Tank?"

Never have I seen such a look of withering contempt from a footballer to another professional in all my life... and it was Roy Kean!

    Sleep well, big man.
