Interesting we've picked Jamaica as our feeder nation, very few top-end footballing athletes have emerged from there.
There are a lot of players of Jamaican descent who have been part of the England team for a long while now. Some of them like Raheem Sterling or John Barnes were born in Jamaica and some have Jamaican parents, like Morgan Gibbs-White, Kyle Walker and Sol Campbell. Typically those players have been the beneficiaries of a higher standard of training in England from a young age. Sterling almost certainly wouldn't have developed anywhere near as much as he did if he hadn't been in an English academy from the age of 10. I imagine part of our strategy with this is identifying potential that we can get for cheap on the basis that with a higher standard of coaching these players can be developed into better players and then utilised in the first team and sold on for a substantial profit. We're already competing with so many other clubs on our own patch and getting players poached by Category 1 teams out of our academy before they even reach the age to make any first team squad appearances, picking up these players for a small investment on proper contracts is a fairly low-risk strategy. You only need one of these players to develop into a Football League level player to benefit.
Fair retort and I don't care enough to carry out the due diligence on all of their backgrounds but I would like to know how many of them have come through the Jamaican footballing system and not benefitted from the English setup from an early age. Sterling for example grew up as a child in England.
Also I'm not saying all Jamaican footballers aren't good or worth looking at, if there's individuals with talent then absolutely but it's the only pond we seem to be fishing in overseas and en masse, they hardly produce the same level of talent as South America for example. If we were looking for an overseas link I'd assume that would be a more regular stream of talent.
Fukuda is a weird Jamaican name...
Yeah good point, didn't realise we'd establish partnerships with a Japanese network too. But don't let the merit of my discussion get in the way of farming those LOLs ;)

Jamaica’s prowess in broader athletic terms is quite astonishing. As far as football is concerned it’s probably a bit of an undiscovered goldmine in terms of Jamaican football league talent. Great forward thinking by the club for exploring the potential.
I had a chat with Charlie about this last season.  Just before we signed up with Mount Pleasant.
It’s fascinating really.  When the slave trade all started apparently Jamaica got first refusal on the African slaves so they obviously chose the fittest and strongest.  Since then they have just maintained a gene pool of excellent physical specimens and this leads to the thought process they Jamaica is a potential goldmine.
he had some statics but I can’t recall them.  But it was quite an enlightening and interesting chat really and hopefully explains our current tie-in with all things Jamaican
Who needs schools and education when Charlie can provide bite-sized history, culture and strategy lessons?!

P.S. Might be worth checking the post for an invoice over the upcoming 28 days.
The only lesson here is that you can't take the Eton out of the boy

Amazing to think that Eton was founded by Henry VI in 1440 as a free school for 70 poor boys from the local manor who were bad at Grammar.

Now Eton will cost around 60k over the school year but it opens more doors than a myriad of keys, and gives supreme confidence to the likes of Charlie Methven, Boris Johnson, David Cameron etc*

*For political balance I was going to put a labour prime minister who had gone to Eton but couldn't find one since Ramsey McDonald became the first Labour prime minister.

    Back to the footie peeps🏐
At least comrade Corbyn was state educated all the way.
It shows...  Dives for cover! 😁

Can start a new thread and keep this away from the transfer rumours if that is preferable.
Yes, I suggested the ‘All and any Bollox Thread’ would be a good idea and then that can get derailed with Transfer Rumours, hopefully;)

I can see Ahadme staying until Godden etc are fully fit. For a loan there is no reason to rush.
Depends on what you mean by rush. Whether selling or loaning, the transfer window is the same (Sept 1st).
  • Just catching up, so many posts, no new rumours then…

Don't be silly, did you honestly think there would be!;)
  • So, who had the medical on Saturday?

    Did they "pass"?
So perhaps this was the U18 British born, Jamaican international player we've signed from a Dutch club after a trial

This is horrifying. Our academy strategy is ultimately inspired by slavery and some sort of racial science? He actually implied this?

I guess we'll be looking at Ethiopia for box to box midfielders who can run all day and not get tired based on the mind-boggling VO2 max performances of its runners, and the Netherlands for goalkeepers cos they're the tallest people on the planet.
    It's also historically inaccurate.

The history of the North Atlantic slave trade is much more complex and appalling than most of us would believe.

But, in short, it was a highly profitable trade, where slavers brought their human cargoes to the markets where they would achieve the highest prices.

They would have sought always to sail directly to their destination, because everything was about reducing costs.

If British Caribbean colonies were provided with large numbers of slaves on a "first refusal" basis it is because the sugar plantations were both hugely profitable and labour intensive.

But the same can be said for other European powers' Caribbean colonies, properties in Haiti, for example, were by area the most valuable in the Works in the late 18th Century because of the riches to be made from sugar.
  • Steve Brown's new role suggests that it isn't the only pond we're fishing in and as stated above we've signed onlu one player directly from Jamaica.

The others are all British born with Jamaican heritage.

Bit like saying we're fishing in the Ugandan pond because we have Asiimwe.
Never heard Lake Victoria described as a pond before.
  • Another slave trade that doesn't get talked about much is the North African slave trade which actually had a lot of Irish slaves but they were neutered so didn't develop ginger people in north Africa.

Yes but what about Israel and Palestine's impact on our transfer window?

Let's just knock this on the head, shall we...

"but it's the only pond we seem to be fishing in overseas and en masse,"

We have 4 current Jamaican internationals. Both Karoy and TC came through our academy, and CHOSE to play for Jamaica...

Amari'i Bell was signed from the powerhouse Jamaican football team of Luton Town F.C., and was born in Burton.

If we sign Dexter Lembikisa, we've signed him from another great Jamaican Team, Wolverhampton Wanderers. And he was born in Lambeth.

So of the 5 current Jamaican players in our 1st team squad who was born in Jamaica? Kaheim Dixon.

If that's signing 'en masse', you must hate our attitude towards the Scots! We've got 3 of them...

Honestly the group think on here is astounding, it's very clear I'm in the minority but absolutely nothing to knock on the head. Yes we already had some Jamaican talent in the squad but it's the only destination we've set up a formal partnership with Mount Pleasant to be somewhat of a feeder club for talent. We've since signed Kaheim Dixon and now another Jamaican youth player. It's very clear the strategy for upcoming talent is to fish in the Jamaica pond or we wouldn't have a specific partnership to supply it, would we? It's disingenuous of you to refer to the 3 Scots in the team as we've not set up a partnership with a talent pool in Inverness have we - if we had done that my point wouldn't stand as we'd be diversifying the partnerships we're looking to make.
At this point I'm really not sure if I'm being quote replied for genuine discussion or to engagement farm.
  • Thank Christ the football is back on Saturday!
  • Wish I hadn’t made my post now 😞

    TRAWL✅
Thanks for seeing my deliberate bait for the day 👏🏼
  • I have been on CL for 11 years and we have been spoilt for rumours this  summer window compared to the past when we hardly did any business until late in the window.
Now we have a couple of quiet days, and we try to entertain the natives until a rumours appears and still the underage geriatrics complain.
Take your medication and have a sleep and we might sign that RWB 🤞🏼

He's setting up a teenage dating agency  :o
  • This has been the best rumours thread for years, the same humour and debate but with added early, quality signings. My personal favourite moment was the genius who spotted Linda Apter following Charlton. All time CL Gold!
Completely agree there! Plus the Linda Fukuda thread that it spawned
