I don't agree he had no pace. He just read the game so well, he didn't need to use it. A few pages back somebody posted a clip of an interception where he is definitely rapid.
I was a regular in Villa Moura - never saw him, but asked the manager and he confirmed that he was a regular - same seat, peri peri chicken.
The restaurant went down the pan a few years later - last time I went, me and the missus had got through two bottles of wine by the time the food arrived, partly because we were alkies, mainly because of the abysmally slow service.
Have subsequently learned some Portuguese, and very sad I'll never get to thank Jorge in his own language.
I think what I loved most was that, when we played the big sides, Man U, Chelsea etc, I felt a lot of our players lacked a bit of self belief and mentally they'd already lost before they got on the pitch. But Jorge Costa had no respect for reputations - "Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, get in my pocket and stay there".
So sad he's gone, but will be a privilege to sing his name on Saturday.
Does anyone know what happened to make him fall out of favour at Porto and subsequently join us on loan?
must have been something catastrophic to move a world class player out of the club?
Fell out it with the manager. Came to us as he needed to be playing regularly in advance of the World Cup.
Manager went in the summer, Mourinho came in and the rest is history.
Costa came back at the start of the following season with his Porto side to play Charlton in John Robinson's testimonial. May have imagined this, but I think he also brought Braga over for a friendly when he was their manager.

Yea I heard he fell out with the manager at the time, but that must’ve been some falling out to ship out a player of his quality!

when I did a stadium tour there a couple of years ago I asked that question and they said he was subbed in a game and didn’t react well, fell out with the manager.

He didn’t look like the kind of guy who would take being subbed off very well!

The term cut your nose off to spite your face could be made for some Portuguese. They will not back down, no matter how much the facts are stacked against them...
13 pages of wonderful tributes to a strong man who made such an impact in just 26 games.
Curbs getting a phone call out of the blue to say would CAFC like Jorge Costa on loan as he had a fall out with the manager and the president of Porto !
A strong man, on and off the field and he has passed far too young.
My favourite JC game was actually away at Spurs - it’s more remembered for Rufus’ comeback where he smashed into everyone after returning from injury but JC was magnificent . Chris Powell shinned in the winner - halcyon days .

The days when we seemed to be at the top of the London derby table.
Am in Portugal atm and they had the braga game on in a bar. A European qualifier against Romanian opposition who all warmed up and did a minutes silence in Jorge Costa t-shirts, nice touch
One of very few players who in just one season became a Charlton legend.
Used to make me laugh how when he went against a faster forward he would just foul him and somehow majority of the time seemed to get away with it. Even the refs were in awe of him.
To be honest I should we should have done better. There was a few people trying to get his song going at 27 minute, but if seemed North Upper had a few who wanted to go there, but no more.

Agreed. Felt like there was hardly any take up on the song at all. Very surprising.

Many of the choir would not have seen JC play or know the song associated with him come to that.

Although they knew Goodbye Horse. I too was a little disappointed re the JC song not getting more of a full on rendition. The words aren’t difficult and we’ve used versions for others including Small last season. Being really honest there were some quite long gaps yesterday with little singing / atmosphere. I’m hoping lots of the regulars were away on holiday.
Though the noise after the goal was something else!!

Started loud I felt, but the game was pretty gritty and lacking quality which calmed it down. I felt there was a better paced VFR rendition which was good.

RIP Jorge!

Porto’s loss was our gain. What a player

RIP Jorge Costa, and thanks for the memories.
RIP George. Lovely to think he had a connection with little old Lee Green..
A few photos of Jorge from the Tom Morris archive.

I mean he is a bloody Charlton legend. Surely you know that much
