Apter is clearly number 1 at RWB and looked very good om Saturday. We aren't going to be dropping 800k on a second choice rwb who is out of contract in 5 months
Apter looked great yesterday but who’s the back up ? Yesterday highlighted how Ramsay can never move from RCB. Maybe it’s JRC.

JRC feels like he's going to be a bit of a swiss army knife type option that can cover RWB whilst also competing with Doc.
Apter can play RWB in our set up but he’s not as suited to it as somebody who is first and foremost a defender like for example Fukuda. Apter doesn’t have to be replaced in the team should we get in a specialist for the role. He’s quite capable of playing in a few attacking roles.

But a more traditional wing back (like Tennai Watson) also isn't suited to it as they aren't attacking enough, Jones clearly prefers coaching an attacker to defend rather than a defender to attack
... if I were Nathan I'd be telling how good he is from the moment he wakes up every day.
Nathan wouldn't have time. He is too busy telling himself how good he is. After which he has to tell God how good He is. No time for TC.
Anyway, how could he tell TC from the moment he wakes up unless they are sleeping together? I don't think TC would be very pleased to be woken by a phone call every morning, even to receive flattery.
Do love the expectation from people that dropping 800k is worth it on a Japanese player who has never left his country and is out of contract in 5 months 🤣 very easy to say when it isn’t your money I guess
If you are that tight-arsed with our owners' money, I hate to think how tight you are with your own. I am glad we are not married!

Maybe but with no disrespect to Tennai he’s not as skilled a footballer as either Small or Apter. A real quality wing back has the ability to defend and get forward with end product. Small hinted at both without being exceptional at either. We definitely need to bring in a specialist for the role.
On the occasions yesterday that Apter was caught up field, Ramsay came across to cover but he shouldn't have. Coventry needs to be in the middle to attack 2nd balls and block shots from outside the area. Doc should have allowed Ramsay to defend more centrally and fill the gap but he never did. Luckily Kayne barely let a cross come in.

Try to think of it almost like having a flat back four in defence in those situations with Ramsay coming across to cover because in the words of Roy Keane, that's his job.

No expectation at all, just would seem to fit us perfectly

Yes, I suppose our asymetric 3-5-2 does allow Edwards to create a back four defending. Not seen many sides set up that way. Kudos to NJ.
Apter is too good not to play, I think rather than a new rwb we should give Ramsay whatever he wants to sign a new 3 year deal
It’s Apter’s first proper season in the Championship. He is also young and playing in a position that isn’t 100%, it’s still different to what he played last season. He is going to need competition, it’s a relentless league with much better players than League One.
Why can we not sign another wingback for competition for Apter AND give Ramsay a new contract?

I agree. At one point yesterday their winger got the ball from a long pass and Apter was 30 yards the wrong side of him. Ramsay gave Apter a good talking to after Ramsay dealt with it.
Apter has been brought in to play that hybrid winger/wingback role. He's going to learn as the season goes on and he's going to learn best by playing. Let's not forget that Ramsay had to learn to play RCB and it really wasn't that long ago he got very found out on his positioning at Wrexham. That was a rarity though and he's had more time to work on it since then. Apter will get better at the defensive side with time but his attacking instincts and willingness to shoot are far harder to train into a fullback. We do need to get another RWB in and I think there will be games where we choose to play a more defensive player but it's also worth remembering that we looked a much worse team overall when we didn't have width pushing high up the pitch on the right and cutting in. The reality is that it's an attacking role in our side more than it's a defensive role. Some of our worst games last season - Reading away, Stevenage away, Blackpool at home - had Ramsay at RWB and we were pedestrian, static and failed to offer any real fluid threat going forward until we changed up the shape

I find it's misleading to say that Apter and Small were playing right wing back. Both are mainly left footed for a start, so neither are your traditional hugging the touchline and overlapping on the outside wing backs to put crosses in with their right foot. In attack they're much more like the modern inverted winger. Apter had a couple of decent shots cutting from the left, and unlike Small he can keep them down! Apter's crosses were also mainly with his left foot.
And behind them Ramsay is a hybrid right centre back/right back. Defensively he often plays more like a right back than a centre back, seeing that he'll be up against pacey wingers mainly, rather than centre forwards.
If we sign Fukada, he'll be a project anyway. I can't imagine someone signing from Japan, not having had a pre season to get to know his teammates and Charlton's system (never mind the language presumably), and him being thrown straight into the team. He'll be eased in over a period of time, so not really cover in case of injuries next week.
Oh for pity's sake. It's not that complicated. In possession our formation is 4-2-3-1 Ramsay-Jones-Bell-Edwards Coventry-Docherty Apter-Carey-Campbell Kelman
Out of possession Apter drops back, making it 5-3-2
Replace Apter with Small, and it's the exact same WINNING formation that we played last season. Yes, defensively we've lost a bit replacing Small with Apter, but we've improved offensively. As some have said, Apter will learn his defensive duties, but running back, and getting in the way is easier to teach than cutting in on his left foot, and curling it into the top corner...
Maybe some of you armchair managers should have a long chat with NJ about how he's doing it wrong. It's not like he's done anything right at Charlton in his 18 months in charge...
I like the look of Apter but I’m unconvinced he’s a RWB. He got caught out of position a few times yesterday but luckily Watford made nothing of it
That’s the sacrifice you have to make if you want the player down that side to contribute the attack. Not gonna find a wingback with both the attacking ability of apter and defensive ability of Edwards they don’t exist at this level. What I liked about Apter even if he wasn’t 100% spot on with his positioning is his work rate was brilliant and he committed to every tackle block and defensive action he faced and tried to recover when caught out of position He won’t be as much as a liability as CBT as a wingback I think he will do well
Personally think Apter is only going to get better and better at RWB. He's got the attacking style right and needs to improve defensive qualities, and there's no one better than Ramsay to be directly learning that from on the pitch.

We don't play with a RWB.. It is a wide forward... Same as it was with Small..
Think we’ve settled the argument whether Apter can play the wingback hybrid role or not
Sure he isn’t just filling in until we sign a RWB? Then Apter can be cover on the bench for TC.
“Cover for TC” this is a joke right?
Yeah, some of us said before yesterday’s game Apter is our RWB, and still will be even if we sign one later this window.
Others were saying we couldn’t assume that based on preseason as he might have just been filling in until we sign a RWB, meaning Apter might play elsewhere.
Yes, elsewhere, but that elsewhere isn't as cover for TC.
The rumours are disappearing as we thankfully did our business early and maybe an 'under the radar' signing to give symmetry to our Summer 25/26 business which started with the excellent signing of Sonny Carey who's understanding with Apter is evident for all to see in the attacking department.
Having been a manager at grassroots level when if you got the early 10am slot you had to put the nets up on a freezing Sunday morning in winter then I'm so pleased I'm an 'armchair manager' now. 🥶

Was thinking the same thing. The owners spend 10+ million on a bunch of players, and all of a sudden people are throwing around arbitrary numbers of how much "they" would spend on X player, knowing nothing about annual revenue, costs, profit or budget.
