Mate is a Norwich fan - goes home and away.

He said Duffy is awful. Nobody could understand how he stayed in the team. He was the weak link.
Goes out every weekend in Norwich, getting battered and cheating on his Mrs.
Desperate to get rid of him. Offered to give him a lift to the Valley.

I agree we need cover for Jones... but Duffy... really?

Not too bothered about the cheating part. I would guess 90% of footballers or more probably cheat on their partners, if that was a contract burner, squads would be pretty sparse in the top4 leagues.

I don't want him if he's getting battered though consistently, can't be having one of our centre backs losing scraps when they're out and about.
That's a random stat to make up.

I don’t believe that stat is true and I don’t believe it would be unimportant , especially to someone like Jones .

Blimey that's a massive bit of generalisation there... I think your still thinking about footballers from 20 years ago.
    Sensitive Charlton Life strikes again.

Don't worry gents, no one was harmed and the whole post was obviously a joke.
Was it though ? Perhaps your brand of humour is too subtle for the mortals .
Should have mentioned a fish pun, that would have gone down a treat.

New Charlton Life no no, do not jest about a players love life.

  • Considering how good our other business has been, there was always one who was gonna slip through the net, can't win them all.
Good thing Stalin did not share your lenient attitude to colossal blunders,  or we would all be speaking German now.

I don’t agree with this logic. Whilst I do think there is a chance that we could keep Fullah around, I can’t see the other 3 coping with Championship football at this stage.  Are we really doing our academy players a favour by not allowing them the chance to experience regular football?

Asiimwe is the best example of this. I think we could’ve comfortably kept him as RWB cover this year. However, he already seems to be a key part of a League One side. It’s better for him and us that way.

I don’t think we should be looking to pack our squad with loans, and I don’t think we need to. That being said, we should be looking to allow our youngsters the chance to develop in the men’s game rather than using them as emergency options at a level that may kill their confidence.
The younger ones it’s much better for there development to be around the first team squad than going out on loan. As they get 19-20 it’s better for them to go out on loan and get first team minutes. That being said, I don’t think bringing in a loan player who is competition for say apter or Edwards is going to effect the game time of mwamba and Josh L.
  • I fundamentally get the sentiment from Rodwell but it just feels misplaced. If the right loanee was offered to us who could be a game changer in terms of ability surely it shouldn't make a difference whether it affects Mwamba or Josh Laq?

It's not blocking pathways really when the academy players should be fringe first team and anyone we looked to bring in on loan I would expect to be involved week in week out?
  • I think loans are no different to purchases .. if it improves the squad then it's a goer if not then it's a waste. Too often in recent years we have had poor loans. Only in the 2019 and 2020 teams did we have loanees that took us to a new level.

I suspect that at Chamionship level good loanees are expensive and come with stringent parent club demands.

Come January we may need players to fill gaps and if quality loaners are available they may be recruited.

The bulk of loans from the Premier League are young prospects. We have our own as defined by that Rodwell comment. Unless we can be sure a kid is going straight into our first eleven which I think mostly unlikely then why get them in ahead of our own young prospects. If a senior player becomes available then for me two questions. Why are they being made available and are they demonstrably better than what we have to go straight into the team. If come January we have an injury situation then I think a senior loan, like McIntyre for example might be worth looking at but in the main I’d agree with Jones.

Totally agree with Rodwell … as we seen some loans just come in to make the numbers up but don’t really force their way into the starting line up as you would wish .. or you get a very good loan who gets recalled in Jan and leaves a massive hole in your team ..
  • Loans are only an issue if you have too many (like Orient last season) and then need to totally rebuild the following season. If you can get a top quality loan like Gallagher, Cullen, Bielik etc then i can't imagine why anyone would see this as a bad thing.
This ^ , it just feels short-sighted to write off any loans at all because we have a thriving academy.

If the right player became available I hope we would actually do the deal. It wouldn't be loans for the sake of loans like under previous regimes , it would be rounding the squad out.

  • With our already deep squad, I tend to agree with Rodwell.

Good loan players, of the Cullen, Gallagher, Rak-Sakhi variety would be expected to go straight in the starting team by their parent club, so wouldn't come to us now. If you're just talking about a reserve wingback, the calibre of player we'd get is unlikely to be that great. I'd rather use the existing squad.

Gilbert was a vital loan last season and was in credit by the time he went back to the industrial waste lands of Middlesbrough. He did a job but wasn't quite what we needed for a full campaign this season.
Charlton Athletic's ethos is about the development of young players and this season with more quality brought into the 20 player squad on Match days you would like to believe that there is room for a Fullah on the bench or possibly starting with an injury or two in the squad.
The bottom line is 'academy home grown' have to be good enough to be in a Championship squad and that's why I was happy with the tie against Cambridge to see again who can step up.

The players you mentioned would go straight into the first team though ? The types of player like Cullen and Gallagher would be a much better upgrade on docherty or jrc imo and why other teams in this division take on premiership loans.

Spends much of his time on the right wing.

Just seen that he might be off to Sheffield Wednesday. Apparently Norwich are touting him around to leave on loan. They hope to reclaim some of his wages.

In a situation not dissimilar to Jorge Costa twenty years ago , he wants regular game time so he can make the Ireland World Cup squad if they qualify.

You mean he's gone through the trapdoor come on mate up your game 😂🤣
