royal arsenal is very bougie. Rest of the town is slowly going that way, but much more stubbornly.bobmunro said:I haven't had a good look around Woolwich (my birthplace) for what must be 30 years - I'll rectify that soon.I am quite excited about the student halls coming in, there’s a couple of pubs (rose’s and elephant and castle) that are absolutely ripe for students, although their regulars might get a bit… punchy. The students will also love the market and cheap clothes there. Think that might help tip the place firmly into gentrification.1 -
Students in the Elephant... good luck kids!!4

Some fantastic pubs in that list - a very rich history and just amplifies how important it is to preserve as many as possible.2 -
8am & students. 😂Diebythesword said:

I’m always amused when I read the (many) digs at the Elephant. Yes, it looks old school, doesn’t sell food and possibly has an edgier clientele to, say the Dial Arch. But it’s given RBG Licensing team and Licensing Police little or no grief over the years, certainly compared to other licensed premises in the area (eg O’Connors, Anglesey Arms and that place by the barrier).
Actually does a decent trade particularly on a Saturday afternoon (And its owned and managed by Charlton fans !).
In the current climate, fair play to the likes of the Elephant, Roses and the Earl of Chatham.14 -

Glad Roses is still there, last did about two years ago. Was having a look round Woolwich and did the new pubs bars in the Dial Arch area. But wanted to visit at least one of the boozers from my youth.bobmunro said:TelMc32 said:

Though Plaisted`s was my favourite.0 -
Wasn’t really a dig, just said the students who’ll live in Woolwich from next year (?) will love it.alan dugdale said:I’m always amused when I read the (many) digs at the Elephant. I suppose “regulars getting a bit punchy” may not have been a dig but, as I say, it doesn’t seem to attract the trouble that other nearby places have.
Not that I was really aiming my post at one specific post on here. I think it was called, “a hole” in earlier comments !!0 -
Well, it is a bit of a dump. A place with a lot of potential, like others in that block! Poshest paddy power and Ladbrokes I’ve ever seen…0
-
Potential for what though ? The owner does pretty well from it, the exterior is repainted every Easter and it’s a regular boozer for a lot of locals who just want to have a few beers and watch the sport (on Saturday afternoon’s anyway).Diebythesword said:Well, it is a bit of a dump. Paddy Power - now there’s a premises that has attracted the eyes of the Licensing powers that be.1 -
I'm always having a dig about the Elephant as I walk past it most mornings and evenings when I am coming out of some dodgy pub myself...
Why does it close at 8pm? is it because it is open so early?1 -
Partly that and partly to avoid attracting troublemakers later in the evening !2

Are you including the above poster in that statement?Curb_It said:I'm always having a dig about the Elephant as I walk past it most mornings and evenings when I am coming out of some dodgy pub myself...

Market pub hence the early start. No different to the Market Porter in Borough Market and the pubs around Smithfield’sCurb_It said:I'm always having a dig about the Elephant as I walk past it most mornings and evenings when I am coming out of some dodgy pub myself...

In the 90s the student pubs in Woolwich were The Directors (now demolished) was not far from the town hall on opposite side of Wellington street. Students also frequented The Earl of Chatham. The students union was in the old swimming baths still owned by the Uni (it was converted to a pub, club and shops in the mid 90s) just down the road from where the police station was on Bathway. At that time there were no Weatherspoons so cheapest booze was the student unions.1

It spills on to the newly renovated beresford square, gets a decent amount of sun etc, is cheap and cheerful. We all know it could also look a bit nicer!alan dugdale said:

Just been to the new Nepalese in the Equitable building. What a great addition to Woolwich. It was packed out at 7pm tonight, we weren’t sure we were going to get in as we didn’t have a reservation.6

You will really enjoy what they have done to the Arsenal so make sure you take some time to explore all around there and down to the river.bobmunro said:ElfsborgAddick said:

But Powis street and Hare street might leave you a little bit depressed. It’s the people sitting and sleeping in the doorways - particularly by the old M&S (I think) the last time I walked down.. but I guess that could be any number of high streets along the country.1 -
I suppose it depends what you are used to, what your "plan is" and what time of day etc.bobmunro said:ElfsborgAddick said:

My wife comes from Woolwich so I know it reasonably well and I have worked there on 2 seperate occasions, although it has changed a lot since I worked there.0 -

The Blue Nile closing was a great loss to Woolwich. Fantastic restaurant.1
