Only 2 teams scored less than a goal a game. Currently we are on 1 goal in 3. I'm not panicking or moaning (yet) but my main concern from last season still hasn't been addressed. A playmaker in midfield to supply chances for the forward players. Perhaps with our set ip we cant play with one....or is Carey / JRC supposed to be that player ?killerandflash said:
This is last season's league table. Look at the goals scored column, and the number of teams who stayed up averaging a goal a game. Millwall even got 8th playing like that.
We're not going to be the sort of side who scores loads of goals, whoever we play up front, as that isn't how we're set up, and we don't have the top quality needed to constantly carve open Championship defences. But we also won't concede many either, and it's that which relegated the bottom 3, not lack of goals.
TC doesn't supply many chances. Raptor looks like he can but mostly when cutting back onto his left foot & pinky crosses often get cut out by the first defender.
Kelman wont score many as (going by last season) he likes through balls to run onto. Perhaps we should just play with 11 6ft 3 players & try to win games by scoring from corners......1 -
We do if we don't start taking our chances. Toothless up front at present.Braziliance said:I don't imagine I will say anything different to what has been said already, but I'll have a read now.
Felt Lesta would have been fortunate with a point, never mind all 3. We have nothing to fear in this league.1 -
If we can hardly score a goal when we’re the better team it’s going to be a long, tough season.Leuth said:I saw some comment after the game that 'we've only scored one goal in 3 games, cause for serious concern'. We've been the better side in all 3 games, what the fuck lol0 -
But he isnt a provider at the moment either. Sort of my point, he isnt contributing.Scoham said:
He's not there to score 15+ goals, it's the other striker who's meant to be the main goalscorer.king addick said:
I certainly dont think he is lazy and he 100% gives his all. My overall point is that he isnt a striker who scores goals or even sets them up and again, in my opinion, if we had Kelman or Tanto start alongside Leaburn then things may have been different.fenaddick said:Other thing I keep seeing bandied about is that TC is lazy which is a crazy take. He presses like a monster, chases down lost causes and NJ loves him. There’s no way NJ loves a lazy player. When we’ve had Fraser, Gilbey et al in the last few years to call TC crazy is mad
I'd like to see what Tanto can do in that position.
I get the thinking behind Kelman and Leaburn together, but I wonder if that will upset the balance of the team. They will both run the channels a bit, but not in the same way as TC or Tanto might. That could put more pressure on Edwards to get forward and in turn Apter to play more like an out and out WB, rather than a WB with a lot of freedom to attack and form part of a front 3.
Looking forward to Tuesday as I'm sure players such as Tanto will get a run out.3 -
Just try to enjoy it... Our expectations seem all over the place. We could've had a much worse start. Or, we could've been playing Mansfield, Burton and Rotherham.
Are we supposed to putting goals past Leicester, who've got individual players that cost more than our entire team put together... Or Bristol, who were in the play-offs last year. We have been competitive in all our games, and we will improve.
We battered Leicester. They win it with a worldie. That happens. It's not a crisis, it's football.35 -
Even Leicester's bench had players worth more than our last takeover with the likes of Skipp and Daka. Just one of those games where a player far too good for this level has produced a moment of magic and it'll happen this season , we definitely gave them a proper gameChunes said:Just try to enjoy it... We should have won yesterday with decent finishing. If our finishing doesn't improve we'll struggle....MarcusH26 said:

One goal in three games isn't great. Defensively we're solid but we have to start scoring...3 -
Been to a lot of games where we've played worse and won. Still upbeat about the season, defensively sound but we do need to finish better at this level as the chances will be fewer.
We need to keep perspective. We played a side that cost way more than us and who four months ago were two divisions above us and should have beaten them. Given the journey of the last fifteen or so years, I'm pretty much as happy as I could be.3 -

Sounds similar to our start last season, but this time we’re creating more, just not finishing enough.hoof_it_up_to_benty said:

This time we have more and better attacking options, I’m sure we’ll find the combination that works best and start scoring more than we have so far.
Our strength defensively means we don’t need to find a way to score 3 or 4 every game.3 -

Small sample size admittedly but their keeper has the 3rd best save % 2nd best goals prevented stats in the league, I think against other keepers we might have score 2 yesterday1

Problem is that most teams at this level will have one or two attacking players like that, that are capable of producing something from nothing.MarcusH26 said:

Need a decent striker - going to be a long season …
Exactly. We created chances but they weren't put away.
Most of our squad are L1 players, so this season is about staying up, IMO.
Do think some of us have unrealistic expectations.

It will happen - the law of averages, etc.
Yesterday was Leicester's day.
Another time, it will be ours.
It's what happens in football.

Jones post match comments were great and he alluded that if that is the type of performance we are capable of then he has high hopes ! I said a few weeks ago I honestly don’t think the squad and NJ are thinking survival imo they think playoffs are possible and tbh with what I have seen so far (early days) it’s not as far fetched as we first thoughtNorthheathAddick said:

Can’t believe we are related. That strike was arrowing into the top corner and it was an outstanding save. Their keeper got MOTM for a good reason, that save being one of them.jimmymelrose said:
Really? That shot scored 0.2% as an expected goal and for good reason. It was too near the centre of goal. Any professional keeper should save that. I really think there were a lot of people with rose tinted Charlton glasses on today.stoneroses19 said:
Well Coventry hit a wonder strike in first half. Most keepers aren't saving that!ct_addick said:Thought Carey was anonymous today and Apter struggled with his crossing…hopefully they can adapt….beaten by a wonder goal. Do we have someone who can do that? Not sure12 -
I really noticed it yesterday, but do the Covered End always sing a different song to Red Red Robins when the players come out?It was a bit jarring hearing two different songs out loud, especially after we voiced to Sandgaard how important and traditional the song was to everybody at The Valley. Slightly confused punter here, I must say!0
