The truth is Woolwich is going through a change and is much like a lot of other London areas now, you will have wealth and poverty within a stones throw away of each other. As a teenager in noughties Woolwich had a reputation as a no-go area, thats no longer the case and it will continue gentrification.
The waterfront/docklands apartments (plus other building work) appeal to young professionals ( usually without kids) especially now because of the increased transport links. The question is when the people who have been living there for 10 plus years (who dont own their homes) are moved out, and they will eventually be moved out, where do they go ?
The only person I ever heard say something other than "Woolidge" was Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks who walked onstage at Thames Poly and said "Hello Wool Which" to general amusement.

Ha, I was there for The Buzzcocks gig.
Buzzcocks, Slits, Penetration and Patrick Fitzgerald all for a quid. Tell the youngsters that etc,etc
Growing up as a kid in Woolwich I still remember vividly the wonderful outdoor and indoor markets. My mate still has the Flower stall on the market which he has worked on since the 70s. Was only chatting to him there the other day. Hope this new investment in that area gives it a new lease of life - markets are wonderful places!!Â

Plumstead.Â
They won’t find anything here. High rents and increasingly high house prices. It’s changed a lot in the 20 years I’ve been here (less a few years in Ireland).
Beresford square market is still going. The indoor market has been long gone. Still waiting on it to be turned into flats and a cinema.
beresford square looking really nice now. Could do with that cafe moving in at the pavilion and when the poundstretcher building goesÂ
I'm not old enough to remember trams, but I do remember the tram lines still being in the square - I'm assuming they have gone now.
Do you remember the Trolley buses 696 and 698? Our family used to go from Woolwich to Danson Park on one of them.Â
My grandad talked about trolley buses but always in a negative way like they were in the way of working people. This was Peckham not Woolwich. But I'm sure he said the last tram to run was in new x PeckhamÂ

Last Tram day in London was in July 1952, the year before I was born. I lived in Woolwich until I was 5, when the family moved to the newly constructed Abbey Wood Estate. I remember taking the 698 trolley bus from the Woolwich terminus at Parsons Hill (outside the odeon) to the Harrow Inn in Abbey Wood village. This was before a diesel powered bus service ran through the Estate, initially the 177A and later the classic LT Routemaster 180 service. (Phwoooaar, bus porn)

The last tram went from Woolwich to New Cross on Saturday 5th July 1952.

I think it has (as we would remember it in the 70s/80s) but I read somewhere that some stalls are coming back. Others would know better.
