Gutted but win or lose on the booze
  • We're a team that works hard, is competitive in every game, but is limited to scoring 1 or 0. We weren't unlucky to not score more than 1 today.

Millwall were greatly helped by Ramsay's rush of blood, but the game was never secure while there was only 1 goal in it.

Our attacking play hasn't clicked yet, but it will have to - Millwall were poor and when teams turn up like this we need to take advantage.

Still early days, improvements to come, I'm sure.

Wonder whats going in with Knibbs. Reading have fallen apart without him but he barely gets a look in. Lack of pre-season surely no longer an excuse. Feel he would make a difference to the creativity in midfield.
The man he replaces has been possibly our best player this season so far in Carey. If you drop Docherty for him, the midfield get vastly overran

Ramsay, Nathan Jones and Leaburn threw that away for us.

Easily the best Charlton performance against Millwall in a very, very long time. Well on top for most of the game, especially the first half, should have made it count more at 1-0 up.

Cannot argue either of Ramsay’s yellows, especially the second, no idea what he was thinking. Just let the play go.

Nathan Jones panicked. Should have left Campbell or Apter on, absolutely no outlet, it was inevitable they’d score at that point. They couldn’t handle Campbell at all, he was brilliant, suicidal to substitute him.

Leaburn either isn’t interested, is lazy, or injured. Absolutely zero effort to close the initial attack down which led to their goal. I would be he’s off in January and that a deal is already done.
    This.

I said earlier that the subs were all wrong. No pace left on the pitch & Leaburn still looks like his father, but without the heading ability.
So what were the right subs, and what was the guarantee that they were going to work? - Don't just say you'd replace Ramsay for Burke either, because Jones was on a booking as well, and was sensible enough not to get sent off
I would have brought Oalafe on for Kelman and not taken Raptor off.

I like to be brave when going down to 10 men. Not bring on defenders & sit back & defend the 1-0. At least have some pace up top so if the ball gets cleared then we have half a change of a counter attack, or set the very least relieve the pressure instead of the ball just coming straight back. Which it did.

But in the end we didn't win because we didnt score the 2nd once we went ahead. That is going to be our downfall this season & a great possibility that we will get relegated.

We had a lot of possession but, as usual, our crossing was atrocious. Cross after cross headed away by their first man. I dont think any of them found a red shirt. I was surprised we scored from a corner as they are now reverting to type after the opening few games of the season.

5 points after 5 games, 3 at home. Not good enough.

Where is the guarantee that would have worked then? - Sorry, we cant sit back and say with confidence that the subs were wrong, when we have no idea that the way we suggest would have been at all successful... Or worse

The question I have got is why have we signed Kelman? This isn’t a slight on Kelman, we just don’t play a style of play which suits him. He could have played for three hours and not scored today. I just don’t know what the plan with Kelman is, we looked so much more dangerous when Leaburn came on and he now deserves to start.

I’ve been too nervous to say this - I’ve been thinking that maybe I’m missing something. If he receives the ball on the ground around the box, he’s dangerous.  I feel sorry for him playing in our team receiving high balls. Today we did play it on the ground in the final third more often but we need to do it as a matter of course to see the real Kelman.

Carey has that spot at the moment and was our best player today. Knibbs’ time will come but he will need to be patient I think.

Would you leave out Carey then for Knibbs

. Fat prick in the East thoroughly deserved his smack in the mouth.
I know @LargeAddick’s constant moaning about the broken lock in the toilets gets annoying, but that is way too rude to refer to him like that, and too harsh a punishment.

There was a 5 minute period before we scored when I thought we had that click that we've been looking for. Our passing became very fluid and we were looking to put the ball in the right places, Kelman was starting to show glimpses of what he's all about and you could just feel momentum was building, minutes later we scored such a well deserved goal.

The thing, if that happened in the 2nd half, we would have gone on to score another and maybe more too, we just clicked so well and it rumbled them completely. But the half time whistle blew and the moment was over in the end.

Putting the negatives aside though, I really enjoyed that game and felt we played some excellent football again. I thought the ref had a real good game too which is rare!

I've seen in some quarters, people I thought somewhat in the know, tipping the great unwashed as a good bet for promotion.

    On todays evidence...not a f******g chance!!

Also it irrationally annoys me (a lot more than it should for a grown man) when we kick towards the Covered End in the first half

  • TC, Carey and Kelman all very good.
Cov, Doc, Jones and Bell all good.
Ramsay brain fade but he has loads of brownie points.

if Millwall are the standard for a decent upper mid table championship side, then we will be an upper mid table championship side. We were better than them in all departments for 80 minutes. Harsh lessons learned today but we’ll be fine this year

Thought that we actually played some decent football at times in the first half.
Lots of our attacks seemed to breakdown when Apter got the ball, as he was off the pace today.
Edwards also gave the ball away lots of times with long balls that went to their goalkeeper.
Reckon that they’d have scored even if we hadn’t of gone down to ten men, as we were just sitting back far too much in the second half.
Goalkeeper worries me, as he hardly ever decides to venture off of his line.
Campbell, Carey & Doc were our standouts.

Set-pieces are awful and the number one thing I want us to work on.
Couldnt understand our tactic of crossing or long ball with the three smallest players on the pitch up front

Their defence won everything in the air.

But switch at 70 when Carey is blowing and give him some time to show what he can do.  Maybe it will come.

Very easy to say in retrospect, but I wish we pushed for that second goal to kill the game off while we were 1-0 up with 11 men on the pitch because I think we would have got it
  • I thought on the whole TC had an excellent game, and the mob from SE16 had to resort to dirty and foul tactics to try and stop him, I feel if he had cut inside when set free by Leaburn rather than try and outrun the defender and ultimately shoot high and wide, he would have had more chance of getting us that important second goal...

Thought TC would be rested today but Jones obviously has a lot of faith in him and the young man definitely showed it was not misjudged.
Doesn't always play the correct final ball but the opposition defenders don't know how to stop him other than by foul means, which ultimately led to our play off win in May.

Not really a fair representation of them with so many injuries.

I admire your confidence, but there's no way we are an upper mid table championship side. Not based on today, or our previous games.

Like others I just don't understand the critical comments about Leaburn.
I thought he worked really hard to close down and compete from the moment he came on.  I was pleasantly surprised. I'd start him in the next game.

Agreed.  But we need to come 20th to achieve our aim this season and currently on track.

2 points in the last 4 games though.

Started the season strong but now struggling to get results from games that are very winnable.
