A couple of photos I took from our last game at the valley before our move to Selhurst .

  • Looks a bigger crowd than the 8.5k attendance
  • Looks like we were playing a flat back seven
  • So you were in the away end 🤔
A sign of the times there with those bloody huge fencing panels either end of the ground…

No one on the East Terrace.

I was also in there, simply no room in the Covered End, so you simply walked from one end to the other end inside the crowd, segregation was very lax
  • My 'no place like home' banner on the fence in the top photo. Made it into press photos. Noone at school believed it was mine and someone at the game took it home with them.

    In that mob somewhere.

If only my 22 year old self had known what was to come following Charlton, would I of taken up cross stitch or crochet instead?

    Nah!

  • Was on the east for quite a bit of the 2nd half, stewarding was extremely lenient once an access route became available
  • One of the few games I watched from the covered end

aware of that, but still looks pretty full I'm guessing circa 3k Covered End, terrace along corner / side looks full + West Stand and then can't see Jimmy Seed standard. Not disputing, just looks like more to me at a glance. Blurry pic mind!

From memory, the Jimmy Seed stand wasn’t even half full
  • Such history, must of been so strange then having to play at selhurst after that.
As a 9 year old my first experience was watching Charlton at Selhurst. Old man wouldn't let me go to Arsenal with my friends so had to choose Charlton or Palace as that was the closest ground.
Luckily chose Charlton as they were Div 1 and the rest is history!
Btw the old man is Wall but wouldn't take me there either!
    Thanks Dad! 😀😀

    ...
  • Once the East Terrace was closed we moved to that little section of terracing between the Covered End and the Main Stand as was, and we were there for that game in 1985. Upon return from exile in ‘92, they had put the changing rooms double portakabin there. You will recall the nice front garden with two sloping lawns and flower pots!

  • I was planning to take a corner flag as a souvenir, but ran on the pitch and forgot in the emotion.

I was in the Jimmy Seed, and can’t remember any spare seats. We were in with stoke and I was stuck in the bottom West corner because it was packed everywhere else.
  • A piece of the Valley turf grows to this day in the back garden of my mums old flat in Blendon Road, Blackfen...I hope!

40 years is a long time ago, I can’t even remember what I had for breakfast

I was on there before KO before being removed by the police and was on the pitch at half time.

  • I was sat in the West Stand.
For some reason it never occured to me to nick a souvenir. I wish I had
  • I was in between the covered end and the main stand. On the pitch at half time. Still got the picture taken when we scored as my screensaver at work.

Never forget it. I worked on a tiling job in Greenwich hospital in the morning. Got changed and walked to the Valley to meet my mate. Had my work clothes in a white plastic bag and you can see it in the photo.

An atmosphere that went from funny to sad to angry at times. In a very weird way part of me is glad we went through it. And we should never forget what we’ve been through.

“You won’t stop us, you won’t stop us “ to the line of sub standard Bobbys in front of us 😂.
