EFL Statement: Blackburn Rovers v Ipswich Town

The EFL Board has today determined that the Sky Bet Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town should be replayed in full following its abandonment on Saturday 20 September.

The fixture was abandoned in the 79th minute after the referee had taken the players off the pitch following a sustained period of heavy rainfall, which caused the playing surface to become unplayable.

The Board comprehensively considered all options available in accordance with the Regulations alongside representations made by both Clubs.

It was ultimately decided by a majority that the fixture should be replayed in full. The decision follows recent precedents relating to abandoned fixtures and is intended to uphold the integrity of the League competition which should, wherever possible, be based on a complete set of fixtures played to a conclusion on the day.

Following due consideration, the three Championship Directors abstained from the vote.

The Board recognised that this was an incredibly difficult decision and agreed to consult Clubs on the best approach to the development of new guidance to be considered in the event of a match abandonment.

A new date for the fixture will be confirmed by the respective Clubs in due course.

Jacob Greaves was red carded in the original match. Does this mean that card is rescinded? Will he be allowed to play? I think these questions should have been answered in the EFL statement.

If the ref had called it off earlier (as he should have, it was unplayable long before the 79th minute) then the decision to replay in full wouldn’t have been so controversial/tough to make.

I would have thought so. Those 79 mins never happened.

I'm pretty sure that Goals become null and void, any bookings don't.

Imagine that by the time is it played; Greaves will be eligible to play regardless, as he'll no doubt serve his suspension this weekend.

Blackburn will be furious now in time for this weekend's game and some poor team is going to cop it for that decision.

    Who are they playing?
Just like Sheff Utd was going to hammer us under Wilder, bring it on.

I think this is the only acceptable outcome tbh.

Let off for Ipswich, however it's the only sensible solution. All connected with Blackburn will be very hard done by if Ipswich get a result though.
And yes, Greaves should not play

    Remember that Doncaster game... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/23737099

Can't find the picture of Jackson emptying his bottle on the pitch

Because teams with 10 men have never scored against teams with 11 men away from home...

The reality is that, with added time, Ipswich would have had 15 minutes to score. That is entirely plausible and therefore the correct decision.

Shit happens, and this time shit happened to Blackburn.

That game was ridiculous though. Puddles were just stopping the ball randomly.

Don’t think Blackburn would expect to be given the win, imagine they pushed for playing the final 10 mins + injury time 11 vs 10
  • With the amount of late goals we score I think this may be the best outcome just in case we find ourselves in the same scenario.

Will be interesting if this has any impact on their performance on Saturday

Worth a couple of quid on Greaves as first goal scorer if he is allowed to play. Bound to happen
  • I believe although the match is null and void, the red card isn't.

Maybe, but it's unfeasible that the whole structure associated with a league fixture could be arranged for a 10 minute match that would not represent, in any way, a reasonable resumption of the original fixture.

I believe although the match is null and void, the red card isn't.

This is what has happened in previous incidents, so assuming the rule hasn’t been changed, this is what will happen now. I believe a Charlton player was treated thus, what made it worse for him was that he scored in the original game and that goal was expunged from the records.
  • He will serve his one match ban this weekend
