200 years of the railways

Those of us travelling to The Valley by train today might like to know that it was 200 years ago this very day that the first railway journey was made between Stockton and Darlington. Perhaps when (hopefully) celebrating a win this evening we should raise a glass to the genius of George Stephenson.

  • Sidcup Station was opened 159 years ago
  • The London and Greenwich Railway (L&GR) was opened in London between 1836 and 1838. It was the first steam railway in the capital, the first to be built specifically for passengers, and the first entirely elevated railway.
  • Greenwich station one of the first ever railway stations.

  • I think I read somewhere that the London to Greenwich stretch was built with one million bricks.
And there used to be a footpath next to the lines that people could walk for a penny.
