Heartbreaking interview on R5 today. I wish him well with what will be a very difficult journey.

It was, indeed, heartbreaking to see that interview this morning with Lewis and his wife, Annie. Their, along with that of their sons, journey is something that no family should have to go through and I can only wish them all the best in dealing with this.
Times have changed and the advent of a winger such as Lomu, a sprinter at 6' 5'' and weighing 20 stone, helped to do that. If we believe that heading a football can lead to brain damage then it is inescapable that rugby will too as the cumulative affect of the hits these guys have to take, playing and in training, must be horrendous.
Our very own Ed Slater, Rob Burrows, Doddie Weir, Joost van der Westhuizen and now Lewis Moody are the well known ones diagnosed with MND. The early onset of dementia is another issue and currently there are mass lawsuits against the governing bodies of both rugby codes. Something has to be done to offset the risk because the game isn't what is was 50 years ago.

Very sad news. And worrying for the entire sport.
Rugby was fine when the little guys were fast, and the giants in the scrum just lumbered around, but when all players are massive, super fit and fast athletes, the impacts on the body and brain are horrendous.2 -
I did an education webinar on MND for our Paramedics around a year ago and this came up. The research is ongoing - the numerous concussions in rugby will undoubtedly cause neurological issues for many players. As players continue to get bigger, fitter and faster there will be ongoing problems.kigelia said:

The most alarming thing is that relatively young ex rugby players are suffering. The authorities in rugby need to be more proactive to ensure player welfare comes first.

This is heartbreaking for him and his family,this is one shit ridden illness that we are nowhere near finding a cure.Although a few rugby players have been affected,i dont know if there is a connection.I have a dear friend who is now 77 and has been bed ridden for 4 years with MND,so it can strike anybody down.0

I avoid Rugby like a disease in itself, one example of which is that I hadn't even heard of him until I saw him speaking on TV this evening.
My thought was 'why don't they wear protective head gear in Rugby'? It's obvious from the state of the poor guy's ears that something is wrong.
It needn't be as cumbersome as in American football, but at least something like Petr Cech used to wear.0 -
