Didn't Hector give up playing for a year or so to look after his seriously ill Father ?1

Carl Piergianni at 33 years old, captain of a table topping League 1 side and putting up consistent numbers, again
Hector
Piergianni
I called he was better than every centre back we had at the time, and it was ridiculed, repeatedly.
There isn't a single centre back we had on our books at the time playing at a higher level now, they can't even get League 2 contracts.
Piergianni might be a Championship player next year, and even if he isn't, it is beyond doubt he is a top League 1 centre back, like I said at the time.Piergianni has certain strengths that work if he plays for a certain style team. He would have been a poor signing for us but he’s great for Stevenage
Piergianni is just a very good centre back, amazing people can't admit it when all the proof is there for them.5 -

The more important question is has any player been loaned out as much as Hector - 15 times over the course of his career. Everywhere from Didcot Town to Frankfurt1

If he was at his level of the last 3 years and in his 20s, someone would have gone for him.
We went for Sam Lavelle and he's honestly about 100x better than Lavelle.
Same reason as to why we will likely keep Lloydy when he is good enough to be in a Championship promotion side/play for a bigger club.
You could even apply your logic to Josh Edwards or Kayne Ramsay, how were they playing Scottish div2 and English level 4 when they were Championship ready. If they were in their 30s, it is unlikely we would have signed them.
Certain players peak when they get older is all0 -
Lavelle was a last minute deadline day signing because our main target Jason Kerr went to Wigan when they were throwing cash around under the Bahraini owners they had. Think he was purely who was available at the time and in budget, was probably earmarked at the time as the replacement for JP.

It's stories like this that make me more tolerant of players when they do the dirty on a club, it works both ways, it's a business for the club and for the player it is their livelihood.

Piergianni is a very good centre back for a team that plays a certain way at league 1 level. If he was as good as you say he is, do you not think at the very least a larger budget league 1 team would have signed him? It wouldn’t have been difficult to get him out of Stevenage
He's a very good defender, but if you asked him to play for a better team he’d be exposed in possession and exposed when asked to defend much higher up the pitch than he does with Stevenage. That’s why his career has hit a ceiling, he’s very good at what he does, and in that role he’s probably one of the best in league 1. But that doesn’t mean he would have been a good signing for us
Macca was a January signing.
I was comparing him to Terell & Hector, who were more main stay in our side.
Even if I was to compare Piergianni to Macca and Lloydy that season, he wins that debate, comfortably. Stats will back that up. Number 1 rated player on WhoScored, Number 2 on SofaScore. The best centre back that season alongside Cashin, that's a statistical fact, not an opinion.
His age went against him transfer wise, if he was younger, he would be at a bigger club, just like Lloyd Jones now. If Lloyd Jones was playing to this level and was in his early 20s, he would be elsewhere this season.
As for his playstyle, in the last two seasons, he has almost identical passing stats to Lloydy before he came to Charlton (66-68%) it is only since Lloyd has been here his passing stats have improved, that's what coaching is for.
This isn't about Lloyd anyway, this is just about how many shit centre backs we have had in the last decade. Makes me laugh.

Playing for a bigger club doesn't mean you are a better player, not in all cases.0 -

I don't think the current setup would make the same mistakes.0 -

Michael Hector was pants.
Ryan Innis won every header and that's what was seen as all he can do, how comes he isn't playing for a good league 1 side anymore? Only 30.
Amazing that a player that has been in a team of the season playing for Stevenage, and been top of the charts defensively for many seasons, just gets his nut on the ball.

Why are we talking about Piergianni?
An average player who's been a pro for about 15 years and spent 8 of them in non-league and another 4 years in league two.4 -

Lyle Taylor played non-league for about 4 years and loads of spells in League 2. It doesn't matter where you start.
I am bringing him up because it's relevant to the thread.
If people could admit he is actually a very good league 1 defender, and that Michael Hector was pants I wouldn't bring it up anymore.
It's important to be correct on Charlton Life. If people are gonna bring up things I have posted, I'll always be sure to remember to do it myself when it's relevant.

Players peak at different times due to a large number of factors. It’s part of why some signings look exciting and flop and why others seem disappointing but are massive successes. Piergianni is great at Stevenage and has benefited from the stability of being there for a while and improving with them. He might have been great here, he might have been awful. Ultimately a lot of our defensive issues seem to have been system and standards driven rather than actual personnel, maybe he could have fixed that but I doubt it2
