THE CRAZIEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME

Pinched from another thread….

I know it's been done before but this is such an iconic game in our clubs history, that I never tire of hearing about. Dad who is still enjoying his football, was there.

Who else was there that day? Memories!

  • a mate of mine who unfortunately passed away earlier this year was there. He was also at Wembley for England winning the world cup. He was not one for lying so i believe him, never asked him for tickets stubs.

anyway, he was on his way to leaving after half an hour. Then he heard a faint cheer so he thought to go back. He saw it all after that and when i first met him he didn't half not go on about what he classed as one of the greatest comebacks in the history of not just this club but in the history of football. bored the fuck out of me after awhile. Though what a game to witness.

It is the greatest come back in British football.
No club has scored 6 goals and lost.

mate no way I'm doubting its the greatest comeback ever in British football but when you weren't there and having someone tell me how remarkable it is it can be a bit grating. mainly cos i wish i was there.
Used to wind him up by saying whenever he thought that was a really good game/performance it was always yeah but not as good as when old Johnny Summers said I'm sick of our dodgy defence I'm not letting us lose this lot.

An incredible afternoon as Denis Law scores all six goals as City storm into a 6-2 lead away to Luton Town in the FA Cup. Unfortunately, with 69 minutes on the clock, the torrential rain meant the referee had no option but to abandon the game. Worse still, City lost the re-arranged fixture 3-1 with Law scoring the goal and his incredible feat in the first game was wiped from the records!

Incorrect report…..it was Buck Ryan who scored the winner……... In the 88th minute.
Where did you get that report from…. diabolical research, they need their arse kicked.😠

My dad was there - if any more drama is needed, apparently Johnny Summers  was dying of cancer when he was scoring the goals

    Well that’s debatable……Johnny died 5.5 years later…..June 62.
He died from lymphoma in his neck…..he was a real cockney gent as I remember him.
I was best pals with his son (also Johnny) we were at Catford Boys School school together and he lived just round the corner from me in Catford…..Johnny Jnr still lives in the same house.
As his dad had just died I asked my parents if he could come to San Sebastián with me a month or so later for a stay with my Basque relatives……which we duly did.
Charlton gave the house to Betty Summers as they owned it.
Some years later Betty married Scotsman Alex Jardine…..ex Millwall Captain.

Huddersfield were managed by the wonderful Bill Shankly, and one of the all time greats of football, Denis Law, was injured and sat out the game, but watched it all sitting beside Shankly.
Law mentions it in his autobiography.

I'm very pleased to say I was there.
Hudds had 3 players who played for England Ray Wilson and Bill McGarry at football and central defender Ken Taylor who played in cricket test matches.
McGarry was later manager of Wolves.

Let me know if anyone wants a copy.

Don't you want my sort code, account number and PIN first?
  • My Dad used to tell me that he missed just one home game that season due to illness. Of course it would have to be this one.
I wasn't there either, but I do have the tee shirt/jumper:

Your probably going to get about 40000 people say they where there, but hand on heart,I was.It was a really cold misty day,I was standing in the covered end age 13,My dad always stood on the North Bank and did that day.I vaguely remember Ufton getting hurt early on,he was prone to this sort of injury(I also remember him having the same problem in a game against Leeds when the great John Charles was playing)the second half was played kicking into the North bank I remember seeing the goals go in and couldnt really believe it was happening as we had written the game off.We went in front 6-5 with not long left, only for them to make it 6-6,but then a diving header in the final minutes won us the game.what a shame no tv coverage was available.

Still not getting any info as to where this report originated from…….I would very much like to find out who wrote it and try to get it altered.
