My favourite will always be the 1978 world cup in Argentina.Shag said:Fortune 82nd Minute said:

I wish I could be as not bothered now and as a youngster I can recall cheering them on in 1978 and 1982 a bit neutral in 1986 ….. old age and bitterness, where football is concerned, means I’ve loved their glorious failure over the years and am most disappointed they qualified.Apologies to our Scottish brethren
Can't believe the number of people on here (unless they've got Scottish heritage) saying how great it is they've qualified.
If the boot was on the other foot, do you think the Scots would be cheering on our qualification. Would they f***.
Only good thing to come out of this will be the chance to see them make fools of themselves again in the finals.
This is why I like it when they qualify cos of what happens to them in the actual tournament.Remember when they celebrated a throw in against germany in the last euros and
then got knocked out by a last minute Hungary goal!! It’s great to watch 🤣
Did a lap of honour at Hampden Park BEFORE the tournament and went off genuinely thinking they could win.
Then completely outplayed by Peru in their first match as they lost 3-1 before scraping a 1-1 draw against Iran that had their fans screaming abuse at the players!
Then to cap it all up they unbelievably led Holland 3-1 and would have gone through if that score had stood but instead let in a late goal that saw them knocked out.
Great memories!!!1 -

This is largely my opinion as well. Let’s face it, any England fan with a modicum of self awareness must know that to outsiders we can vastly overstate our team’s quality going back to the 70s - arrogant and deluded isn’t an unfair characterisation. Only in the last few tournaments have we consistently lived up to where we see ourselves in the pecking order. There are obviously a range of other cultural and political reasons why other Home nations might dislike England as well.letthegoodtimesroll said:I’m English and proudly British. I always like to see the other Home Nations do well unless they are playing against us. TBF, they do seem to be mostly shit at team sports these days for some inexplicable reason, more so when they play us, and when they gather together in just their own separate nationalities despite having some pretty decent players to select from. A bit like we perennially were if we’re honest but now seem to have got our act together in a number of team sports. No wonder they ‘hate’ us 🤣On a separate note, one thing I loved about the Scotland game was McTominay mouthing “where’s my mum” when he went to the crowd to celebrate his goal.1 -

I hope the draw is kind to Norn Iron, Ireland and Wales, it would be great to see at least one more from the British isles there, though a north v south derby in the Emerald Isle would be kind of intriguing...
But leaving that aside for a mo. CONMEBOL? What the F*** is that all about?
6 nations from the confederation qualify automatically, but just in case that's not enough, they get a bloody play off spot as well!
That's potentially 70% of the members - and if Suriname (who bizarrely play in CONCACAF) make it too, that'll be eight teams from a continent of twelve countries.
Is this a throwback from when Havelange was in charge of the whole shebang, or do they have pictures of Infanto he would rather nobody sees?
I think we should be told...
The BBC have an excellent article on the players and teams that have missed out. The varying numbers of countries who have missed out is interesting...

It took 3 players to each score a once in a lifetime wonder goal for them to beat an over- committed ten man side that was still at least three levels above them in technical ability. They may not be a bad side but they definitely are not good one. No team is going to be disappointed to be in the group they get picked for.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
Only problem is that they're not actually a bad side now and there are going to be a lot of rubbish countries at this world cup, so they might actually get out of the group this time.Fortune 82nd Minute said:

Don't get me wrong i'm not trying to claim they're world beaters but since the Euro's they've had wins against Croatia, Poland, Greece (3 times), Denmark and drew with Portugal. Also drew away to Denmark.letthegoodtimesroll said:

Clearly they're not a poor side and i'd be very surprised if they don't make the knockout stages (remember it's now last 32, not last 16).2 -
The way Royal Mail are performing, they could still be home before the postcards.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

FIFA are so scared that Brazil might not qualify that they make it pretty much impossible for them to fail.
It’s so skewed in their favour it’s outrageous.Happy to be corrected, but I believe the only countries to have successfully qualified for every World Cup they’ve entered are Brazil, Argentina and (West) Germany.
The Germans deserve a lot of respect for this. Not so much Brazil and Argentina.2 -
will make it even funnier when they don'tChris_from_Sidcup said:

Australia - South Africa - New Zealand would be fun...
Uruguay - Norway - Ghana might be less so0 -
Norway pot 3 and Ghana pot 4 has the potential to make one of the hardest groups ever.0

I make out I support the Sweaties as it really annoys them (the ones I know cos they hate England apart from Weegie obvs) & then wallow in wonderous glory as they inevitably crash and burn.
But then they always get their own back after we’ve been singing it’s coming home and it never does.
All part of the fun and games.
Mind you, I’ll always hate any of them that adorn an Argentina shirt……wankers.0 -
We’ll end up getting Iran, Paraguay, Haiti. Piss the group, get another shite team….then lose to France.4

notwithstanding some of the stronger UEFA sides that could qualify in pot 4 such as Sweden who have badly underperformed and Italy, Czechs, Turkey, blimey it could be ridiculous!Laddick01 said:Norway pot 3 and Ghana pot 4 has the potential to make one of the hardest groups ever.1
