Charlton 25/26 Tactics Thread

Great video. His videos (and I think he's got a podcast) are a really good watch/listen if you've got a spare half hour. Has been very complimentary of us whenever we're brought up as wellfenaddick said:0 -
It’s just who we are mateCaptainRobbo said:
Are you Ange Postecoglou?Redrobo said:I think we will go for an inverted goal keeper playing it up into the hole to a false number six.
In possession we will incorporate the offensive players into midfield in a hexagon shape, and out of possession we will go to the rectangle five five.
Under pressure we will just hit it as far as we can and hope someone gets on the end of it.
Do I get the job?2 -
Some very good stats in there too- highest in the league currently, i think he said, for set piece effectiveness (i.e. goals). Also a very good account of our whole 'team game' and use of space, (which could makes it especially useful viewing for those who prefer to highlight single player deficits and pattern of play when we are 'on the ball').fenaddick said:0 -
Feels like an apt time to bring this thread back as just last night we played
5-box-1
4-4-1-1
4-diamond-2
Obviously before we've played a couple of variants on 3-5-2
Given the personnel available, I can't work out what the best option is. The 5-box-1 bails out Gillesphey's lack of pace a bit we lose TC as an out ball. Would 4-4-1-1 work better with TC and Apter on the wings and Carey in the 10? The centre of defence is then very slow. It's a bit of a headache0 -
We only have two centre backs who are equipped to play in a 4, and that's Jones and Burke. Ramsay, Gillesphey and Bell are good options in a 3 but I wouldn't want either of them playing in a 4 for an extended period. Burke isn't fit enough to play there regularly so at the moment a 3 is the only way to go. Jones seems to always have the diamond in the back of his mind but it totally failed when he tried it at Stoke and the few times he's tried it with us it's been a disaster, it has to be binned. Against Coventry I'm fine with TC playing at LWB with Tanto in front of him, then Bell can come on later to get some minutes and hopefully start against Pompey, after which hopefully we'll be ok0
-
Now that Bell is back we should be able to revert to our usual way of playing. I’m honestly not sure there was a way we could have set up these last 2 games that resulted in more than 0 points, we definitely got things wrong that meant we were hammered but I think without a left back we were never going to get a result in either game
Maybe Costello gets a go in midfield for Docherty to switch up personnel, but I think we should just try and forget these last 2 games, revert to how we were setting up before and hopefully performances and results pick up0 -
I still maintain when everyone is fit the best 2 formations for us are 352 or 4231
Right now with the injuries we should probably play a diamond midfield and a back 5 to make use of who is fit and what should stop us shipping so many goals
Saturday, let's be honest, is a complete free hit in terms of tactics and lineup0 -
Doesn’t matter what formation we play at present, want to play a back 4 can’t do that don’t have 2 Cb’s who can play in a 4, want to play a back 3 can’t do that don’t have a player who can play LWB.
know Bell is back but after being out for a while and the fact it’s clear his body couldn’t handle the intensity/load of playing as a wingback would we risk him there when he’s the only option for that position or we can play him LB he’s likely to stay fit but again we don’t have 2 natural CB’s who can play in a 4. Just seems like we’re screwed either way till January0 -
I’m confused at why we haven’t tried Bree at LWB yet. We need a defensive LWB to protect Gillesphey, so put Bree there and then we can go back to our balance of attacking RWB with Ramsay able to shift to RB to cover1

Thought I'd resurrect this thread to show the importance of balance to our side. The average positions of our whole team when we have proper WB's is so important.
This is Blackburn away (last league game where Bree and TC played at WB against 11 men)
And this is QPR
Just look at the WB's. Chambers average postion is higher than TC's and Clarke is actually further back than Bree. This is the game that Bell switched to RCB and Macca came on at LCB so clearly wheover has Bell behind them is confident bombing on. It's also noticeable that Blackburn was Kelman's best game and he was much further away from Miles compared to Friday with Dykes. Finally, look at Coady compared to Coventry, he's much more central. If you look at their heatmaps (which I won't attach, too many images). Coventry spends a lot of his time filling in the gap behind Bree. Coady also helps out on the wings but covers both much more evenly.
Some of this is down to the tactics of opponents but a huge amount of it is that we actually have balance. Possibly for the first time since Jones took over we're playing a really tradtional 352/3421 system with two attacking wingbacks and two and out and out strikers.4 -
Think we were quite “traditional 3-5-2” at the start of last season but didn’t really have the attacking threat with Ramsay and Edwards wing backs that we do now with Chambers and Clarkefenaddick said:Thought I'd resurrect this thread to show the importance of balance to our side. TC was playing up front though, so it was somewhere in between the two, just without Small on the right making it the full on hybrid set up.NabySarr said:

And Edwards isn’t an attacking WB in the way Clarke/Chambers are, he’s a capable attacker but he’s much more defensive than those two. Anyway, we started the season with Apter at RWB not Ramsay, then Bree came inScoham said:

So much more balance and we did actually look more comfortable in possession and appeared to want possession more than usual.1

We actually had less possession than our season average, we just passed it around the back lessThe Red Robin said:So much more balance and we did actually look more comfortable in possession and appeared to want possession more than usual.1 -
Dont mind the formation against qpr,
but,
at home 0-0 at 70th min when we are tired, we need to be able to switch more attacking, 4-3-3, and make use of players like campbell, fullah, tanto etc,
doesnt seem complicated to me0 -
TC and Tanto who for starters both play on the left and have zero end product and a Fullah who is a complete unknown quantity. We would all like us to play nicer attacking football but our team isn’t good enough Yh we would score more but we would get relegated.2121 said:Dont mind the formation against qpr,

Agreed - it was more positive and progressive.fenaddick said:
