Curious as to why we signed him now if he wasn't ready? Would've thought it would make sense to give him these u21 games first, then sign him if/when his fitness was up.
Maybe he wouldn’t have agreed to play them without a contract. Doubt it’s an expensive one if it’s only for a month or so
These signings of out of contract players who it looks like are not up to it, makes you wonder what Jones has against loan signings. Would not a young fit player from the better academies be better. Even if? they would have manly been on the bench.

Great, so all being  well he'll be fit and ready just after Edwards and  Bell return

At one point in the first half he was in the penalty area waiting for a cross which never came. Preston cleared with a long ball down the left with the defence left exposed.

There did seem to be some reluctance to pass to him.

Why would a Prem club loan us a young player to sit on the bench?

Watching him on the stream last night my first thought was he should run it off in training. I thought that when I first saw Andy Reid, then quickly realised Reid was decidedly good at football, I didn’t get that impression yesterday.

Even if he is weeks away. From the 21st December to 4th January we have 5 league games in a short period. Edwards won’t be back and we won’t have been able to sign a LWB by then. If he’s ready for that stretch of games it will have been worth signing him and getting him up to speed
  • Did i read (happy to be corrected) that he'd been training with us for a while before we signed him?

If so how can he be that unfit? Fully aware that he hasn't played for a while but surely after being a pro for 15 years you have a decent level of fitness. Unless of course he's spent the last 5 months playing COD and eating pizza.

There’s a huge difference between fit and match fit. Players have a whole month of pre-season to build up match fitness to start the season, we know how important that is. Anyone without a club has probably kept themselves fit but that’s never going to be match ready

He was training with us for a couple of weeks, he’s now had 45 minutes of football. If you compare that to a usual pre-season then that’s nothing, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s still not ready yet to be in the Matchday squad

I dont really think Jones plans to use him unless there is another injury or two, but there isn't any point in panicing if that injury happens and you havent already got someone in the squad. He needs to already be there just in case and there are very few other options available.

He's got some pedigree so might be decent but there are others who, whilst not ideal, we can play there. Kayne, Hernandez and TC are all more trusted players by Jones and more likely to play there if the gamble with Jerome doesnt work out. I think maybe even Doc could be played LB/LWB.

As Naby says above, he's been signed now for a bit of cover in a few weeks IF we need it.  Hopefully we don't!  Anyone expecting him to be in the squad straight away is mad!

Fair enough then, i thought i read he'd been training with us for 4-5 weeks. If it's only been 2 weeks then it makes sense.

He looked heavy and unfit last night when I saw the U21s

If there was a list of available left backs i wonder who else was on it and could there be a fit one ready to go.

Would you risk injury and go all out in a U21 game? He was just going thru the motions…think he would step it up in a league game…

If we are after left sided players, isn't Naby Sarr available?

Probably under orders not to either, given he's only being included to get his fitness up for the first team.

There must be someone we can get off some agent's books who fancies proving themselves in the English championship through an English winter and Xmas schedule?! Who are the football equivalent of Reed Specialist Personnel services? Just give them a call. Must have Right to work, and speak some English, no remote workers.

That’s basically what we’ve done. I know it’s what this site does but it’s mad that he’s been written off based on 45 minutes in an U21 game played on a sodden pitch

It was a very meh first half and Preston were the better team, so not sure I’ll make judgement on him that way

Sounds like he’s weeks away . What’s the point ?
Or why didn't we start getting him or someone else in and fit as soon as Edwards went down. It was inevitable Bell or Gilly would go down given they had no options to rest or rotate on the left side of defence.

If we were proactive and sustained then we would have someone fit and ready now

We did, it was Onel Hernandez... However he's more attacking than Edwards and a bit of a loose cannon so it's pretty apparent that hasn't worked out

It wasn't sodden during the time he was on the pitch. The heavy rain came in the second half.

You want to brush up on your Arabic, your contract expired in June.
