Sadly my daughter was denied her place in the Winter Olympics last week after GB picked an older athlete that up until June
represented Canada (albeit with British heritage).

It was a horrible week involving lawyers and appeals as really on paper there was an extraordinarily strong case that my daughter should have been picked based on results.

GB only had one quota spot for Women’s Cross Country Skiing which my daughter earned for GB last season with her result in the u23 World Championships in Italy. The other athlete saw this, switched her license from Canada to GB and swooped in to grab the spot.

Discretionary selection for the Olympics means the selection panel gets to pick based on judgement - which is tough in a linear sport where results are really rankings on who crosses the line first!

Still she’s very young in this sport and we’ll help her stick around for the 2030 Games if she wants to. She’s an outstanding athlete at such a young age.

Give her a like and follow to see her progress - hopefully there’ll be at least one other Charlton fan competing next week.

    Sorry to hear that.
    Hopefully she carries on
  • Bless her heart ! But age is on her side & she'll only become more experienced & determined next time round.

Give her a big hug from the Lifers, please.

That's shite G. Any chance she could represent Canada in 2030? 😀
  • Absolutely disgraceful but unfortunately this kind of nationality swooping goes on a lot and the UK sporting bodies seem to encourage it as they’re only thinking about securing their funding for the next Olympic cycle

Just caught up with this - good luck for the future - i know where you are coming from - my daughter was South Africa 50 metre freestyle champion age 13, but sadly didnt have the total dedication needed to take it any further,

Sorry to hear mate, keep believing Tabitha 💪
  • Oh thats so cruel and unfair... If I understand it correctly, the Canadian wouldn't even be going if not for Tabitha's achievements, as there would never have been a spot open - The selection committee should be ashamed of themselves.

    She'll bounce back stronger - it's a shitty situation.

Unfortunately the Olympics is a bit of a gong show - people have cottoned on that they can pick up a minority sport with a non-traditional country & with a little dedication meet the very low bar for qualification & buy themselves an Olympic experience. GB prevents this after Eddie The Eagle by now setting very high standards for qualification in every discipline - even though ironically Eddie is probably our most famous Winter Olympian

So you end up with this situation. There'll be a few in Milano not much better than the guy below (at an Olympic Qualifying event) representing all kinds of obscure nations.

    Its not a parody!!

I’m really sorry to read this , her dream lives on though and may she one day achieve it and I hope it feels even greater then.
She should be rightly proud of her work so far . Keep going ,don’t let them grind you down.
